My worst interview experience occurred at a
restaurant in downtown San Francisco called Roy’s. This
interview wasn’t meant to acquire myself a job but rather
give myself experience in the culinary industry by means
of an internship program. It was a Saturday afternoon
when I met up with John, who was in charge of running the
establishment. He was the person who interviewed me for
what was then a possible internship position at Roy’s.
John immediately greeted me with a smile and a
handshake. He then told me to sit down at one of the
front tables so that we could discuss about my background
and goals which surrounds the entire internship program.
The first part of the interview was pretty much basic. He
just asked me about my background which includes
education, work experience, and hobbies. Then he
proceeded to ask me about my intentions with the
internship program. I told him that I wanted to gain
experience within the restaurant business and possibly
acquire a job within the restaurant after the
internship program.
I must say that the conversational part of the
interview turned out decent. I did not expect anything
else after that but apparently I was mistaken. Following
the conversational interview was an activity he said was
set up to evaluate the skill level of an individual.
Being caught off guard I had no choice but to follow and
try the skills test. The skills test was a hands on test
to see if a person is skilled enough to handle two
different tasks at the same time. I could understand
their concept of evaluating an individual but I find it
too shallow of a test to base everything on how an
individual handles the test. It is true that it is a test
of multi-tasking but I still don’t see how it can suffice
to the real test of cooking and doing different things in
the kitchen at the same time.
The first part of the test was a figure which were
made by lego pieces with different colors. The person
being tested must create the figure exactly how it is
seen. The configuration, the placement of all the pieces,
and the color of the pieces. The second part of the test
was putting together differently shaped nuts into a bolt.
There were about 8 different pieces to put together both
sides of the bolt(4 on each side). The true piece was
poorly printed on a paper that was difficult to see but I
guess that was part of the test on how attentive I was to
details. These two different tasks were to be done while
being timed. Every ten seconds I was instructed to switch
to the other task and I think I switched around for about
a couple of minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to
finish the assigned tasks at the specific time that they
instructed me.
I was not given the internship position and was
left to search other establishments for a position. It
was unfortunate that I did decently on the first part of
the interview and be discounted for it because of the poor
skills test I have attained which personally is not an
entire measurement of performance for myself. I just felt
that the hands on test they give people were not the full
measurement of an individual’s skill. The logic was there
but for me if it were to be a true test let it be in the
kitchen making different things and not playing with legos
and bolts.
