The central pattern of imagery, one closely connected at times to the ideas of magic and witchcraft, is that of imprisonment, of evil entrapping good, of Iago the spider catching Othello the fly. This passage is crucial to the development of the play and to the relationship between Iago and Othello because it is an important part of Iagos plot that leads to Othello’s downfall, and shows how manipulative and calculating Iago is to the trusting unsuspecting Othello.

This passage occurs during a conversation after Cassio “steal(s) away so guilty-like” when Othello approaches and Iago first very subtly sets up his plot saying “Ha! I like not that.” Iago then slowly builds up, carefully leading Othello with suggestions and hints, till he finally tells him he thinks Cassio and Desdemona are sleeping together. Othello at first doesn’t believe “No, Iago, I’ll see before I doubt; …Away at once with love or jealousy.” In the beginning of this crucial passage Iago says “She did deceive her father, marrying you;” echoing what Brabantio last said to Othello “She has deceived her father, and may thee.” Not until this passage does he start to agree with Iago and start to doubt Desdemona.

The relationship between Iago and Othello shown in this passage is also shown throughout the play. Iagos love and loyalty “Comes from my love.” “My Lord, you know I love you.” to Othello is a lie, truthfully Iago feels “I hate the Moor.” Othello “is of a free and open nature That thinks men honest that but seem so,” he believes “Honest Iago” and is sure of him “A man he is of honest and trust - To his conveyance I assign my wife,” Iagos side of the relationship is best summed up “Though I do hate him as I do hells pain, Yet for necessity of present life I must show out a flag and sign of love, Which is indeed but sign.”

Irony is a repeated theme throughout the play, and used by Iago. In this passage his love and his telling Othello not to suspect or to jump to conclusions “My speech should fall into such vile success As my thoughts aim not at.” which is ironic because that is exactly what he wants. Othello believes all that Iago says and becomes jealous, Othello slowly becomes more and more alike Iago and starts using animal imagery in his speech as well.

There is some imagery in the passage that are regular throughout the play.

Iagos careful scheming to convince Othello of Desdemona’s infidelity is a major step of his plot and his deceit and lies, and Othello’s slow but accepting gullibility that make up their relationship are a major part of the play so make this passage crucial.
