Oedipus’ downfall was indeed caused by the Gods who control the fate of mankind, “Certain it is that by the help of God we stand - or fall.” Fate is defined as a set future that no human can have control over. It is believed that fate ruled the lives of the citizens of ancient Greece and for poor, helpless Oedipus this meant disaster. Oedipus’ parents, Laius and Jocasta, were told at Oedipus’ birth by Apollo’s Oracle that he was destined one day to kill his father, and to become his own mothers husband. This clearly shows that Oedipus is at no blame for what had become of him; fate and the Gods were the ones who plotted out Oedipus’ life even before his birth. Even with a small amount of free will Oedipus could not have changed his destiny.

Oedipus is clearly innocent in his crimes as fate ruled his life and no matter what was done, Oedipus and his loved ones could do nothing to change Oedipus’ dark destiny. Belief in the Gods of Greece was the answer to everything. When there was a famine or plague or in Oedipus’ case a Sphinx the people would turn to the Gods for an answer to their problems. This is how Oedipus was led to discover that he had been living in sin. When Thebes was in famine the people turned to the Gods for an answer and the Gods told the people to find out who killed the former king and incidentally Oedipus’ father, Laius. Oedipus led the search as the King and found the murderer to be himself and this led to his discovery that his wife is too his mother. It was the Gods who led Oedipus into his downfall rather than himself.

The Gods were the ones who also put Oedipus into the position that he could commit the heinous crimes, which he committed. By telling Oedipus that he would kill his Father and marry his mother, Oedipus fled Corinth and the people who raised him, whom Oedipus thought were his parents when indeed they were not. The Gods appear to be playing a game with Oedipus by giving him half the story, leaving Oedipus believing that he was the son of the King and Queen of Corinth, so that their original proclamations, of Oedipus’ ill fortune, would come true. This evidently is a reason why Oedipus was not the cause of his downfall; rather the Gods were the ones who laid out the terrible fate for Oedipus.

Oedipus could not have changed his fate and was consequently left with no choice but to live the life that he was destined to live. Indeed fate is as much to blame, if not more, for what happens to Oedipus, than Oedipus himself.
