The two paintings that I seen at the art institute of Chicago were Saint Martin and the beggar and Saint George killing the Dragon. Saint Martin and the beggar was by El Greco and it was done on 157. Saint George Killing the dragon was done by Martorell was done in 140.
El Greco did this painting on oil and canvas that had a wooden strip added at the bottom. The image of Martin and the horse and the beggar are positioned in the foreground. Even if the color is blue it precedes back in space. The painting looks mystical and it looks real at the same time. There is a light source mostly on the horse and not much on the figures. This is more painterly then linear because you can not see the outlines. It is a closed form painting. It is very clear and you can tell what is going on. When you look at this painting, you can read exactly what it is trying to tell you. You can see Saint Martin giving the beggar a piece of his clothing.
As for Saint George killing the Dragon, it was a little different. This was made from Tempera on a panel of wood. In this painting you can see Saint George is about to kill the dragon. You can see the dragon’s eyes in terror and the frightened horse. You can not really see the face of Saint George because his eyes are shut and he does not want to seem frightened in front of the princess. On the bottom of the painting, you can see bones from animals and humans. To me that showed that the dragon had eaten them. When I look at the dragon’s tail, it leads me to the horse and to the princess. She looks like she is waiting for Saint George and meditating or praying for him. In the background there is so much going on. There is the castle with all the people in it. Then you see a plain of trees and forests behind the princess. Also, behind Saint George you can see a beautiful pond. You can see all the people looking at the princess and Saint George. When you look at this painting you can see different angles of lighting. The metal armor looks real as its reflection takes us right to the horse. The dragon’s skin looks also real. It makes me want to touch and feel the texture of the dragon’s skin. The most important thing that leads my eye from the image is St. Georges long sphere. The vertical line of the sphere takes us to the dragon’s eyes, and the horse, and to the princess. The painting looks linear because of the outlines of the horse, scarf, sphere, and the dragon. The castle also looks linear because the light hits the edges of the building. The princess’s red dress and white horse are symbols of sacrifice. This painting looks like it is open form. There is so much going on that you do not know where it starts or where it ends. It just gives us an idea because of the sphere and how it is placed vertically.

Illhia Paqueta is an island in the south eastern coast of Brasil, to be more precise, it is off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The island it self is only accessible by boat, helicopter, or seaplane, however it is one of the more populated islands in the region. I myself spent much of my early- mid childhood going to the island; my father would take my family there on our boat just about every weekend. The funny thing is that this painting was finished in the year 11, which is a whole lifetime (70 years) before I was born, and going by his painting I could swear that the place has not changed at all. The painting depicts the beautiful bay that is the main entry point to the island; Miharakis did a beautiful job in painting the local environment, as well as a very large number of people (probably exaggerated).
In this piece Miharakis uses many “tricks” to lure the viewer into this environment. When you first look at this work your eye is automatically pried to the top right corner, because of the bright yellow color that he uses for his leafs. Then your eye is taken back toward the left along the upper most tree line, and then back down the left side. All the while she’s put all kinds of gorgeous plant life, mixed with some houses in the background. When your eyes finally come across the bottom part of the painting, that’s when you realize that no matter what happened in the past, at this moment the people pictured in this piece, are genuinely happy, and full of life, it really makes you want to be there, on that day with those people.
This painting not very balanced, for you have lot more things going on in the upper part of the painting then on the bottom, such as most of the people, all the foliage, the houses, and some wildlife Were as the bottom of the painting, consists mostly of lighter colors, with the water, as well as some people. I really loved this piece, I thought that it was very well made, and it looked as if Miharakis put a lot of work into this piece. Illhia Paqueta is not a painting of what an ideal person would look like, but of what an ideal day would look like, because the people are really just part of the back ground. The first old lady tells us that it is poor Addie’s birthday, which she will not admit.
The three main characters in “A Visit Of Charity” were all very different yet they made the story work. The two old women stayed in this dreary nursing home with no connection to the outside world. Thomas Gage was the British commander and chief. Colonel Prescott, of the Continental Army allegedly issued the famous order, ”Don’t one of you fire until you see the white’s of their eyes.” The Americans allowed the British to advance almost to the bases of the fortifications and then opened fire. General Howe led two costly and ineffective charges against the American’s fortifications but failed to inflict serous casualties. After obtaining two hundred reinforcements, which included greatly needed ammunition for his artillery, Howe ordered a bayonet charge to seize Breed’s Hill. In his third attempt, the British were finally able to force the Americans, who were out of gunpowder, to retreat back to the mainland. In the course of the engagement, Charlestown was set on fire by British shells and burned to the ground.
This battle, though victorious, proved costly for the British. Of the twenty-four hundred British soldiers in Howe’s command, one thousand and fifty-four died. This accounted for nearly forty percent of their ranks. The American casualties were four hundred and forty-one, including thirty captured. The battle served to prove to the American people that the British Army was not invincible. It became a symbol of national pride and a rally point of resistance against British rule.
The effect of this battle was to electrify both sides of the Atlantic. The Yankee farmers had held their ground. They had been defeated, not by the professional soldiers drawn up against them, but by a lack of ammunition. Throughout the colonies, Americans began to believe that independence from Britain was not only desirable but possible. The official British report of the battle arrived almost two weeks after the American version and was, by comparison, so dull that almost no one paid any attention to it. Imost of my problems aren’t really bout god ay, theyre more like I either do something wrong or say something wrong or just don’t get out and do shit, I think a lot of my problems, even though I love them so much, come from drugs and alcohol, I don’t really know how, I think they just make me more depressed and shit, I wonder if my parents know I do drugs, I guess they do cos one morning I came home and spewed for like an hour and dad walked in and was like wats up and im like fukin sick fuckin drinkin and hes jus like let that be a lesson to me, yeah it was a fuckin lesson, don’t fuckin drink jim beam straight, or if ya do don’t drink a whole bottle, ddamm, never again, I read somewhere that a bottle of beam is 0 standard drinks, damn, and that’s probably mixed, in drunk it like straight, damn, lucky I didn’t die, god I done some fucked up shit in my time, but still I persist and want to do it again and yet again still, u know I cant remember the first time I got stoned, I remember when I first got drunk, I remember when I first had sex, I remember most of the girls that I have felt for over the years, I remember when I got drunk at school, god that was bad, I kinda eased up for a bit after that, it was so funny but, I remember sittin in history tryin to read this thing out for the class and only me mate knew why I was laughin so much and I just couldn’t get it out, god it was funny, everyone just looked at me, one of the teachers found out after that, I don’t know who told her I have me suspicions but, its not like I got in trouble or anything but Ive never really got caught for anything, Ive never really been in a fight I only one time hit me amte and it kinda stopped like that, I know I can hold me own but cos I have glove fights all the time, ive gone toe to toe with a big fella and by like the end of 0 seconds we were both fucked, and hes like twice my size, me and me amte once watched fight club and decided to start our own, this was at the point I was beginning to get tired of life and do anything that came my way, so one time we got drunk went to this park near my house and bashed the fuck out of each other we had one hit each and that hurt like fuck, then we jus went for it god I was sore by like minutes we just stood there like breathin real hard and I jus went im kinda tired… I might go home now… and he was like yea,m and I was like cya tomorrow and we were still mates it was mad, the next time we did it was out at a house at country, were I might end up this weekend surprisingly, that time was bad, I like hit him in the nose and he hit me too and I was bleedin everywhere, I think it was pretty even but, considering how drunk I was and how not-drunk he was….., yeah and I was like bleedin in the toilets for so long, someone came in and I was in the bathroom and id left all these tissues in the toilet cos id forgotten to flush it and they just ran off and were yellin someones got their rags, someones got their rags, it was so funny……. Promotion is often described as the fourth and final element in the marketing mix, as conceptualised by McCarthy (de Sáez 1), the other elements being product, price and place. Promotion itself is often divided into a mix, best
understood as a portfolio of promotional techniques or channels, selected to meet the
prescribed objectives of the promotional strategy (Rowley 18). Walters (1)
divides the promotional mix into advertising, personal selling, public relations and
promotions, while Rowley (18) adds direct marketing, sales promotion, and
sponsorship.
There is a common factor between all of these tools of promotion they all
involve or constitute a communication model. Some critics actually refer to the
promotional element of the marketing mix as marketing communication (de Sáez
1). What is the relationship between promotion and communication? Rowley
(18, p. 8) suggests that promotion is one side of the communication process,
the other side being provided by market research, to create a two-way
communication model, described thus

Interpretations of the relationship between the concepts of promotion and
public relations are particularly heterogeneous. Public relations is defined by
Leerburger (18, p. 7) as a management function that establishes and maintains a -
way dialog between an organization and its various publics and to use that dialog to
express a positive influence towards the organization. An alternative definition is
offered by Hart (1, p. 47), who sees public relations as the planned and sustained
communication of you messages to your target markets using the public media of
print, broadcast and electronic press. A rather limited denotation, it focuses on
media to the exclusion of the promotional or public relations event (Krieg-Sigman
15) and the role played by all staff i.e. the embedded public relations value of
quality service delivery (Usherwood 11).
Amidst all of these seemingly confusing statements, have we
developed a useful sense of what promotion is, as well as what it is not? To
summarise, promotion is variously defined as synonymous with, more than, or less
than the related concepts of marketing, public relations, communication and
publicity. However, if we synthesise the available literature, several salient factors
emerge while promotion, public relations and communication can all be said to
involve relationships of influence and meaning, the literature suggests that public
relations and communication, for good or bad, are inevitable. Even when promotion
occurs with inadequate thought and planning, a decision was taken at some level,
however perfunctory and instinctive, to do it. Therefore, promotion is
premeditated. Whether disastrous or wildly successful, a choice is made to
promote or not to promote.
The decision to promote is taken because positive outcomes are expected to
result from the time, resources and effort deployed. Therefore, successful
promotion is partially dependent on meeting clearly articulated objectives. Whether
or not those objectives have been met will be dependent on a process of evaluation.
Promotion is also based on an assumption of quality i.e. that something is worth
promoting, and that the promotion itself ought to be of commensurate quality.
More than simple promulgation, promotion contributes to an onwards and
upwards momentum.
Hamilton (10) distinguished between promoting in order to raise awareness
(publicity), and promoting in order to sell something (marketing).

Cronin (181, p. 85) posits a cumulative advantage theory of promotion,
suggesting that effective promotion will have a snowballing effect and gathering
influence and momentum and easing the way for future promotion, so that success
breeds success.
Rowley (18) translates the objectives of promotional strategies into a
number of categories, including increased sales (equivalent to use in libraries), the
maintenance or extension of the market share, brand recognition, the creation of a
favourable future climate, an informed and educated market, a competitive
advantage and improved promotional efficiency. It is a mixture of short and long
term outcomes, encompassing the cognitive, affective and behaviour stages of the
promotional communication process. Rowley stresses that these objectives must be
adopted in proportions that are appropriate to the individual organisation.
Irving (1, p. ix) plots the potential objectives of marketing along a
continuum which ranges from the direct and palpable, to the indirect and more
enduring outcomes, all contributing to improved funding, support and impact. It
would seem sensible to assume that promotional objectives will correspond closely
with those of the overall marketing strategy.
But why evaluate? Most simply, because there is no other way of
knowing whether promotional objectives are being met and there is no conceivable
justification for not knowing. Moreover, whether those objectives were satisfied or
not, we need to know precisely why (Pickton 18).
Usherwood (181b, p. 166) further asserts that, while it may be difficult,
evaluation (of public relations) is not impossible. He identifies the real problems as
being the difficulty of measuring long-term cumulative effects and the sheer
expense of evaluation, which he estimates, may be greater than the cost of the public
relations effort itself. By implication, evaluation is perhaps the only (albeit costly)
means of justifying the initial expenditure on promotion.
Usherwood (181b, p. 168) also criticises the lack of precision in many of
the evaluative methods thus far identified. We have already looked at the example of
the complex relationship between library promotion and increased use.Usherwood
offers another attendance figures are often recorded at promotional events and cited
as proof of the impact of that promotion, but other evidence suggests that the
people who attend such events are already well informed about the service or topic
being promoted.
Rowley (18, p. 87) adds that it also difficult to separate out the effects of
promotion form other elements of the marketing mix. For evaluation purposes,
Rowley suggests sales figures (presumably for a fee-based information service) and
other measures of reputation, but offers no explanation of what these measures
might involve.

Promotion is often described as the fourth and final element in the marketing mix, as conceptualised by McCarthy (de Sáez 1), the other elements being product, price and place. Promotion itself is often divided into a mix, best
understood as a portfolio of promotional techniques or channels, selected to meet the
prescribed objectives of the promotional strategy (Rowley 18). Walters (1)
divides the promotional mix into advertising, personal selling, public relations and
promotions, while Rowley (18) adds direct marketing, sales promotion, and
sponsorship.
There is a common factor between all of these tools of promotion they all
involve or constitute a communication model. Some critics actually refer to the
promotional element of the marketing mix as marketing communication (de Sáez
1). What is the relationship between promotion and communication? Rowley
(18, p. 8) suggests that promotion is one side of the communication process,
the other side being provided by market research, to create a two-way
communication model, described thus

Interpretations of the relationship between the concepts of promotion and
public relations are particularly heterogeneous. Public relations is defined by
Leerburger (18, p. 7) as a management function that establishes and maintains a -
way dialog between an organization and its various publics and to use that dialog to
express a positive influence towards the organization. An alternative definition is
offered by Hart (1, p. 47), who sees public relations as the planned and sustained
communication of you messages to your target markets using the public media of
print, broadcast and electronic press. A rather limited denotation, it focuses on
media to the exclusion of the promotional or public relations event (Krieg-Sigman
15) and the role played by all staff i.e. the embedded public relations value of
quality service delivery (Usherwood 11).
Amidst all of these seemingly confusing statements, have we
developed a useful sense of what promotion is, as well as what it is not? To
summarise, promotion is variously defined as synonymous with, more than, or less
than the related concepts of marketing, public relations, communication and
publicity. However, if we synthesise the available literature, several salient factors
emerge while promotion, public relations and communication can all be said to
involve relationships of influence and meaning, the literature suggests that public
relations and communication, for good or bad, are inevitable. Even when promotion
occurs with inadequate thought and planning, a decision was taken at some level,
however perfunctory and instinctive, to do it. Therefore, promotion is
premeditated. Whether disastrous or wildly successful, a choice is made to
promote or not to promote.
The decision to promote is taken because positive outcomes are expected to
result from the time, resources and effort deployed. Therefore, successful
promotion is partially dependent on meeting clearly articulated objectives. Whether
or not those objectives have been met will be dependent on a process of evaluation.
Promotion is also based on an assumption of quality i.e. that something is worth
promoting, and that the promotion itself ought to be of commensurate quality.
More than simple promulgation, promotion contributes to an onwards and
upwards momentum.
Hamilton (10) distinguished between promoting in order to raise awareness
(publicity), and promoting in order to sell something (marketing).

Cronin (181, p. 85) posits a cumulative advantage theory of promotion,
suggesting that effective promotion will have a snowballing effect and gathering
influence and momentum and easing the way for future promotion, so that success
breeds success.
Rowley (18) translates the objectives of promotional strategies into a
number of categories, including increased sales (equivalent to use in libraries), the
maintenance or extension of the market share, brand recognition, the creation of a
favourable future climate, an informed and educated market, a competitive
advantage and improved promotional efficiency. It is a mixture of short and long
term outcomes, encompassing the cognitive, affective and behaviour stages of the
promotional communication process. Rowley stresses that these objectives must be
adopted in proportions that are appropriate to the individual organisation.
Irving (1, p. ix) plots the potential objectives of marketing along a
continuum which ranges from the direct and palpable, to the indirect and more
enduring outcomes, all contributing to improved funding, support and impact. It
would seem sensible to assume that promotional objectives will correspond closely
with those of the overall marketing strategy.
But why evaluate? Most simply, because there is no other way of
knowing whether promotional objectives are being met and there is no conceivable
justification for not knowing. Moreover, whether those objectives were satisfied or
not, we need to know precisely why (Pickton 18).
Usherwood (181b, p. 166) further asserts that, while it may be difficult,
evaluation (of public relations) is not impossible. He identifies the real problems as
being the difficulty of measuring long-term cumulative effects and the sheer
expense of evaluation, which he estimates, may be greater than the cost of the public
relations effort itself. By implication, evaluation is perhaps the only (albeit costly)
means of justifying the initial expenditure on promotion.
Usherwood (181b, p. 168) also criticises the lack of precision in many of
the evaluative methods thus far identified. We have already looked at the example of
the complex relationship between library promotion and increased use.Usherwood
offers another attendance figures are often recorded at promotional events and cited
as proof of the impact of that promotion, but other evidence suggests that the
people who attend such events are already well informed about the service or topic
being promoted.
Rowley (18, p. 87) adds that it also difficult to separate out the effects of
promotion form other elements of the marketing mix. For evaluation purposes,
Rowley suggests sales figures (presumably for a fee-based information service) and
other measures of reputation, but offers no explanation of what these measures
might involve.

Communication and the media are very essential in our lives. Without them there’s no way to announce or bring information to society. The media has the responsibility to bring the audience the correct message and in a way that everybody can understand. What the media projects will be what mostly affects people minds. For example, the TV program “Cops”, presents mostly the arrest of black people or others minorities. This creates in people the image that most black people and minorities are criminals.
I understand that in these two papers, Patricia Raybon’s “A case of Sever Bias” and Joanmarie Kalter’s “Exposing Media Myths”, the topic is the media. It’s an explication of how the information is changed and disturbed by the media communication. On one hand Patricia Raybon talk to us about the racism, discrimination, and irresponsibility of the media communication. This is something that has been affecting people’s perspectives since a long time ago. In those times (60’s, 70’s, 80’s) the discrimination against black people was very high. She says that in the eyes of the American news media, black America is poor, criminal, addicted, and dysfunctional. She is trying to explain that the media is on the side of the white people. The media is hurting the black population. The author of this paper, Patricia Raybon, has overcome the white people’s view of black community; she’s not a crack addict, a welfare mother, a prostitute, never been in jail and her children are not in gangs. She is not what the media says about black people. In the paper she mentioned a very good point “the media is guilty of severe bias and problem screams out of correction”. That sentence tell us the truth, the media is guilty of how the world see black people. Her purpose in this paper is to let America know who black people really are; their complexity, subtleness, artfulness, enterprise, specialness and loveliness. The black people are strong, capable and surviving. That is the best-kept secret in America it’s time to let the truth be known.
On the other hand we got “Exposing Media Myths” by Joanmarie Kalter. In this paper we can see that the problem is communication. Communication between the one who sends the message and the one who receives it. The message is not clear. It’s says in the paper, that studies have found that viewers understand only about one third of network news stories. People believe what they can interpret from what they see or understand from the news, not what the news is really trying to say. When news televised the Vietnam War this is what happened. The media want to keep people informed about the situation of the war. But instead it provoked society to manifest against the war. That’s the big problem, that’s what the author is trying to show us. The message or the news is altered when are transmitted by the media communication. The point is that the writer that sits behind the typewriter is trying to tell the story in a single and organized way, but the people responsible of transmitting the story by media are changing the complexity and the reality of the news.
In both papers the problem is the communication, the media. How the media affect the message that is trying to be sent to the viewer. I agree with Patricia Rybon because I think she’s telling us the truth. When the US was in segregation, the media affected black people in a negative way. The rest of the people marked them. Every time somebody said something about black people they generalized. Now, the paper of Joanmarie Kalter has also a point. People don’t understand the news how they really are, but maybe if TV did not transmit the news the majority of people would not be informed about what’s happening in the world at all.
