Domination versus Subordination

What do the terms domination and subordination mean? Webster’s dictionary defines domination as the act of dominating; exercise in power of ruling; whereas subordination is subject to the will of another and lower in rank or importance. One would consider these definitions as our cultural normalcies; however, different cultures place more emphasis on one more than the other. The meaning delves deeper than what lies on the surface. As one person can be dominant one moment, they may also be subordinate the next, as Odysseus showed in his great epic, the Odyssey. Domination and subordination are always at the point of interchange. There are many attributes to consider when considering whether one is dominate or subordinate. While one culture might value heroism as an attribute of domination, another might place more emphasis on servitude, making subordination a clearly more valuable attribute. In the Western text, The Song of Roland, and the Eastern text The Ramayana, domination and subordination are both incorporated, however, the Eastern text celebrates submission more whereas the Western text celebrates domination.

In the Western text, The Song of Roland, domination is an important element of the Western culture. What constitutes domination in this ancient text? One act of domination shows that whether one is ill-fated or not, continuation is a must. Roland showed this type of domination. He did not want to back down from the pagan force. He did not see death as an option at the time when Oliver suggested that he blow his horn to sound for back-up from the French. Roland replies “I’d be a fool to do it. I would lose my good name all through sweet France. I will strike now…I promise you, they are marked men, they’ll die” (74). This shows courage in the eye of danger. Although Oliver was the more level-headed of the two, the poem sings the glory of Roland more since he was the one in charge. When Roland finally realized that death was inevitable he sounded the horn, as if it had been his idea all along. Oliver went along with it since he was submissive to Roland.

In most texts, domination and subordination coincide. With domination, one must have a subordinate being underneath them. This is true in The Song of Roland. Oliver, Roland’s dear and entrusted friend, had the qualities of being subordinate. He was submissive to the demands and wishes of Roland. Said Oliver “The pagan force is great; from what I see, our French here are too few. Roland, my companion, sound your horn then, Charles will hear it, the army will come back” (74). Roland, however, did not want to submit to the pleas of his friend, since he was the dominant one, so he pressed onward. Oliver submitted to the wishes of Roland. Both of these men had amazing courage, Roland for facing the pagan’s with full force, and Oliver for being wise enough to see when defeat was inevitable. In other cultures, such of those of the East, Oliver might have been seen as dominant within a certain degree in his submissive actions, since subordination was of greater value.

In the Eastern text, The Ramayana, the value was shifted more towards subordination than it was on domination. Rama, King Dasaratha’s oldest son, was submissive to his father. The king thought himself as old and wanted to turn the kingdom over to Rama. However, King Dasaratha had promised two boons to Kaikeyi and one of which she used to make her own son, Bharata, the new king. Therefore, King Dasaratha had to send his son into exile. Rama then said, “For there is no greater act of righteousness than this obedience to one’s father and doing as he bids” (58). Rama was subservient to the wishes of his father and, “did all that was required to please and benefit the people of the city” (581). His father thought of Rama as the one who brought him the greatest joy because he was so virtuous and showed reverence to him. This is much like the story of Joseph, in which his father thought most kindly of him. This made Rama and Joseph loyal and virtuous, which was a major attribute to their subservient culture.

Since subordination can not work alone, domination is always lurking in the midst. It is true that in this culture, subordination was the attribute most thought of as virtuous and respectable. However, domination was present. King Dasaratha had the power of ruling over his people. He excised this power to the greatest of his ability. Although he had the utmost love for his son, he had to send his son into exile within the forest. Being king, his domination was more like a curse than a gift. Since he was ruler over all, he had to send his own flesh and blood out into the unknown, for that was the culturally accepted thing for the dominant character to do in regards of being king.

To be dominant and to be subordinate are two entirely different characteristics. However, in order for one to exist the other must also exist. There is always a line between a leader and a follower, whether it is thick or thin. The most important thing to remember is that no matter where one goes, whether it is to the east or the west, these two attributes will be found. That is when one must decide which one is more commonly appropriate in that culture. There is a time and a place to be dominant and to be subservient.

Company Background

Enron is the story of the largest bankruptcy in the history of the United States.

Through a variety of accounting tricks relating to partnerships, the company was able to inflate its profit and lower its debt. Enron executives earned millions through these partnerships and by selling stock before its demise while employees lost pension plans and retirement funds and stockholders lost value.

In 185, the merger of Houston Natural Gas and InterNorth of Omaha, Nebraska formed Enron Corp. Enron began as a natural gas pipeline company but soon evolved into marketing electricity and natural gas, delivering energy and other physical commodities and providing financial and risk management services to customers worldwide. Eventually, the company became the largest natural gas merchant in North America and the United Kingdom.

Enron’s divisions included transportation and distribution wholesale services, retail energy services, broadband services and corporate services. Its Transportation and Distribution sector was named Enron Transportation Services and Portland General. The services include Enron’s interstate natural gas pipelines, Transwestern Pipeline Company, and Enron’s 50% interest in Florida Gas Transmission Company. Their wholesale services included businesses around the world. Operations were in developed nations as well and developing nations. Enron, through its subsidiary Enron Energy Services, customers are able to manage their energy requirements and reduce their total energy costs

Enron’s Broadband services include providing customers with a single source for bandwidth services. Other services include providing water and waste services, developing and constructing power projects and operations at Enron’s headquarters.

In 184, Enron became the largest marketer of electricity in the United States. In November 1, Enron launched Enron Online, which was the first global web-based commodity-trading site. On this site about $1.5 billion worth of transactions are done every day.

Key Players

The major executives that were involved in the Enron scandal include Kenneth Lay, Andrew Fastow, Jeffrey Skilling and Jeffrey McMahon. Kenneth Lay became the first Chief Executive Officer of Enron when it was first formed. He was previously the president of Fransco, a rival company. He was CEO from 185 until February 001 and remained chairman until the company’s collapse. In August 001, he again became Chief Executive Officer. Lay can either be looked at as a manager who knew what was taking place and overlooked it or one that as completely unaware of the financial misrepresentation. Andrew Fastow joined Enron in 10 from Continental Bank in Chicago, Illinois. It is believed that Fastow created many of Enron’s partnerships.

Skilling became the Chief Executive in February 001 and resigned after only six months because of personal reasons. It is believed that Skilling created the deals along with Fastow to aid in hiding debt. Jeffrey McMahon was Enron’s treasurer and executive vice president of Finance. He was a former employee of Arthur Anderson, a public accounting firm that joined Enron in 14. He complained about the deals that Fastow created.

Timeline of Events

In December 000, after a seemingly successful quarter, Enron announces that president and Chief Operating Officer will assume the responsibility of Chief Executive Officer. The company’s stock rose to a fifty-two week high of $84.87 on December 1, 000.

In August 001, Skilling, after only six months of assuming his position of CEO unexpectedly resigns stating that it was for personal reasons. Only two months later in October, Enron reports a $68 million third-quarter loss and discloses a $1. billion reduction in stockholders equity partly related to partnerships run by Chief Financial Officer, Andrew Fastow. The Securities and Exchange Commission begins to investigate the cause of Enron’s financial mishap. Throughout these happenings, Enron’s stock prices drop below $10 a share after reports were made that the company was seeking additional financing. Enron later filed documents with the SEC revising its financial statements for the last five years to account for a $586 million loss.

Dynegy Inc. planned to purchase Enron for more that $8 billion in stocks. Dynegy later backs out of the deal after Enron’s credit rating is downgraded to junk bonds. Enron’s stock prices plunge to below one dollar amid the heaviest single day trading volume ever for a NYSE or NASDAQ listed stock. More that 1,000 employees were dismissed without notice. Soon thereafter, Enron filed for Chapter 11-bankruptcy protection and sued Dynegy for wrongful termination of a merger. Enron also arranges up to $1.5 billion in financing to keep operating while under Chapter 11-bankruptcy protection. The company later terminated four thousand employees.

In January 00, Kenneth Lay was told in August that transactions with private partnerships run by company executives were a “bit like robbing the bank”, according to documents uncovered by a congressional hearing. After being subpoenaed by regulators, Enron employees shredded and deleted documents. This was the first sign that there was criminal activity in Enron. Soon thereafter, Lay resigned as CEO. This was done while the US Congress prepared to extend its investigation of the bankrupt energy trading company. Once the hearing was scheduled, Kenneth Lay refused to appear before Congress to aid in the presentation of evidence.

Enron’s Financial Condition Before the Scandal

Enron’s 000 letter to its shareholders states “Enron’s performance in 000 was a success by any measure, as we continued to outdistance the competition and solidify our leadership in each of our major businesses. In our largest business, wholesale services, we experienced an enormous increase of 5 percent in physical energy deliveries. Our retail energy business achieved its highest level ever of total contract value. Our newest business, broadband services, significantly accelerated transaction activity, and our oldest business, the interstate pipelines, registered increased earnings. The company’s net income reached a record $1. billion in 000” (Enron, 1). The letter continued to state that Enron sees its market opportunities tripling over the next five years. This letter seems to be very reassuring to its stockholders but in less than on year, they will be in for a surprise.

By looking at Enron’s Income Statement, it seems the company was in a great financial state. Its revenues had increased from approximately $40 million in 1 to

$100,78 million in 000.

Net income increased from $8 million in 1 to $7 million in 000. The balance sheet of the company showed no evidence of malpractice. In all areas, there was a significant positive increase.

The company that audited Enron’s financial statements was Arthur Anderson. Joseph Berardino, Anderson’s Chief Executive Officer, blamed the structure of the accounting industry for contributing to the collapse of Enron stating that audit rules barred Anderson accountants from warning the public about the company’s financial problems.

What Really Happened?

From 1 to 15, Enron’s executives created a series of off the book partnerships that were used to hide millions of dollars in debt. The partnerships were seemingly very complex and difficult to explain. The purpose of the partnerships was to transfer debt to an outside company and get it off the books. Enron wanted to enter the energy market without sacrificing its credit rating by carrying too much debt.

Only % of the money invested into these partnerships came from Enron, therefore executives’ felt it was not necessary to report debt because they were separate from Enron. Although Enron and its directors controlled the partnerships, any debt it incurred was not reported on the balance sheet. They were named after various characters like Star Wars’ Chewko. An example of an investment includes Enron lawyer Kristina Mordaunt. In March 000, she was invited to a partnership called Southampton Place. She invested $5,800 and only a few weeks later checked her bank statement and received a deposit for $1 million.

Fastow also turned a $5,000 investment into $4.5 million. Because of shuffling assets and creating illusory profits, Enron overstated earnings by $1 billion from the third quarter of 000 through the third quarter of 001.

Between 1 and 001, US Attorney General Ashcroft receive approximately sixty thousand dollars from Enron. President Bush also received seventy-four thousand dollars from Enron during his campaign.

Major Problems and Concerns

Once Enron filed for Chapter 11, banks pension plans and other lenders with at least $5 billion at risk. More than 4000 employees have lost their job and 401k savings plans. Employees have proceeded with a lawsuit against Kenneth Lay and Northern Trust, their pension plan administrator. Former employees who accused the company and others of improperly encouraging or requiring them to keep Enron stock in their pension accounts brought the lawsuit. The suit says that Enron has a duty to assure that pensions and 401k plans are funded with prudent investments. Was Enron wrong for forbidding it’s employees from selling it’s stock?

Tens of thousands of Enron stockholders watched their stock lose value from over eighty dollars a share to less that fifty cents a share, which is worth over $50 million of stockholders, value. While thousands of employees and stockholders lost money, Kenneth Lay cashed out on $1 million worth of stock options in 000 alone and another $5 million in 001. While the company was falling apart, other executives received compensation. Just days before filing for bankruptcy, Enron handed out $55 million to 500 senior officials, an average of 100,000 each. Was this fair?

Ken Lay and Enron contributed over $ million to his campaign for governor and president. In 000, Lay sent a memo to company employees suggesting they contribute persona funds through the company’s political action committee. At times, Lay also loaned Bush his corporate jet. California’s energy crisis was caused by Enron suddenly inflating the price of electricity, forcing blackouts throughout the state. Bush refused to intervene to help his customers because they did not want to hurt Enron. Were Bush’s ties to Enron too close?

What, if anything, could the federal government have done to prevent Enrons collapse and to protect employees and shareholders?

Australian Industry Commonwealth Bank

Introduction - All over the western world it is becoming more common for governments to privatize publicly owned companies. However, is the privatization of publicly owned businesses beneficial to the Australian economy? This essay will examine this question with specific reference to the recent privatization of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA).

History - The Commonwealth Bank of Australia was first founded in 111 and was the first bank to combine both savings and general trading in the same company. This ingenuity gained them the security of a federal government guarantee and created ties between the bank and the federal government. From this foundation, the CBA became a government owned company. However, poor returns and inefficiency recently left the government no option but to privatize the company.

Privatization Theory - A basic argument given for privatization is that persons who work in government owned companies have few incentives to ensure that the enterprises they own are well run. On the other hand, it is believed that private owners do have incentives, for if their businesses perform poorly the companies will lose money. The theory holds that, not only will the business customers see benefits, but as the privatized company becomes more efficient, the whole Australian economy will benefit. In the privatization of the CBA customers saw improvements in customer service, with the specialization of labour within the company. This included the creation of branches designed solely for processing, which utilized the specialization of labour. (Commonwealth BankAbout Us - http//about.commbank.com.au)

Similarly there are some negative consequences to the privatization of companies. Improvement in company efficiency is almost always accompanied by large layoffs of staff. The Commonwealth Bank was no exception, as the specialization of the workers dramatically improved their efficiency, which enabled the company to layoff staff without sacrificing any working capacity. An example of this can be found in rural Australia, where many workers were made redundant to improve branch productivity and company profits. (Financial Review Events www.afr.com)

Commonwealth Bank Events - The Australian Government decided to sell off the Commonwealth Bank in small sections, before fully privatizing the company. This proved successful. However, one minor problem the process encountered was in the selling of their shares to foreigners off shore. The state allowed this, for the money invested by foreigners helped to provide the capital needed to upgrade and modernize the firm, making it internationally competitive. Improvements in the CBAs operating and stock market performance, and rival banks reaction to the partial and full privatization announcements, were strongest after the Bank had been fully privatized. Long-term stock market performance improved markedly as the proportion of government ownership decreased, with the Banks cumulative abnormal returns being 50% more than those of its rivals three years after the Bank had been fully privatized.

Figure 1 CBA Revenues (Financial Review)

By reducing costs and improving its profitability in the post-privatization period, it has outperformed its rivals on almost all the operating performance measures, and has become the most profitable bank in Australia. This is partly due to the effectiveness of the ‘performance based incentives’ system. The profits don’t end there, for the Government also benefits directly from the privatization. This is because Privatizations are usually organized as auctions, where bidders compete to offer the state the highest price, creating real income that can be used by the state as investment capital.

Net Profit $.8b $.655b

Earnings Per Share $1.86 $.0

Dividend Per Share $1.6 $1.50

Relation to Government - The benefits governments gain from privatizing companies extends further than just receiving money from the sale of the assets. The improvements in company efficiency not only removes the financial burden from the government but also help to strengthen the Australian economy. This is done through the creation of new capital and the specialization of the labour force. These two factors are significant in providing and maintaining a strong economy.

Conclusion - The implications of these results are that governments contemplating privatization of state-owned enterprises are required to fully privatize, in order to achieve strong gains in efficiency, profitability and stock market performance. The keystone in the success of privatization is the ‘profit motive’ which is responsible for improvements in efficiency and functionality of the business. The Privatization of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia is a perfect illustration of the benefits available in not only the end product, but also in the process involved. So the privatization of public owned companies can be beneficial to, and successful in, creating a stronger economy.

Consciousness is the awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings being experienced at a given moment. Consciousness is divided into two broad states waking and altered states of consciousness. In waking consciousness, we are awake and aware of our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. When we enter an altered state of consciousness, our mental state differs from waking consciousness. Sleeping and dreaming our natural altered states of consciousness. Unnatural ones include hypnosis, and ones caused by drug use.

Sleep occurs in four different stages of sleep. Stage 1 sleep is the state of transition between wakefulness and sleep, characterized by relatively rapid, low-voltage brain waves. Stage sleep is a sleep deeper than that of stage 1, characterized by a slower, more regular wave pattern, along with momentary interruptions of “sleep spindles”. Stage sleep is a sleep characterized by slow brain waves, with greater peaks and valleys in the wave pattern. Stage 4 sleep is the deepest stage of sleep, during which we are least responsive to outside stimulation. Several times a night, when sleepers are in stage 1 sleep, sleepers heart rate increases and becomes irregular, their blood pressure rises, their breathing rate increases, and males have erections. This is known as rapid eye movement sleep or REM sleep.

There are several theories that try to explain why we dream. There is the unconscious wish fulfillment theory, which is Sigmund Freud’s theory that dreams represent unconscious wishes that dreamers wish to fulfill. According to Freud, the disguised or real meanings of dreams, hidden by more obvious subjects are known as latent content of dreams. The overt storyline of dreams is known as the manifest content of dreams. Today scientists don’t really agree with Freud and his view. According to the dreams-for-survival theory, dreams permit information that is critical for our daily survival to be reconsidered and reprocessed during sleep. J. Allan Hobson proposed the activation-synthesis theory, which says the brain produces random electrical energy during REM sleep that stimulates memories lodged in various portions of the brain.

Circadian rhythms are biological processes that occur repeatedly on approximately a twenty-four-hour cycle. Sleep and wakefulness is an example of a circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythms explain the difficulty people have in flying through time zones, known as jet lag. The result can be fatigue, irritability, or just outright error.

Hypnosis is an example of a state of altered consciousness. People who are under hypnosis are in a trancelike state of heightened susceptibility to the suggestions of others. Hypnosis has a lot of myths revolving around it. They will not become antisocial or self-destructive. They will not reveal hidden truths, and they can still lie under hypnosis. Hypnosis has been used to do many things such as controlling pain, reducing smoking, treating psychological disorders, assisting in law enforcement, and improving athletic performance.

Another example of an altered state of consciousness is meditation. Meditation is a learned technique for refocusing attention that brings about an altered state of consciousness. Following meditation, people report feeling thoroughly relaxed. They sometimes relate that they have gained new insights into themselves and the problems they are facing.

Thousands of people die from complications of drug overdoses, and more are addicted to various kinds of drugs. Psychoactive drugs can take you to an altered state of consciousness. Even coffee and beer classify as a psychoactive drug. The most dangerous drugs are addictive drugs. Addictive drugs produce a biological or psychological dependence in the user; withdrawal from them leads to a craving for the drug that in some cases can be nearly irresistible. Stimulants are drugs that affect the central nervous system by causing a rise in heart rate, blood pressure, and muscular tension. Caffeine is an example of a stimulant. Nicotine is another example of a stimulant. Cocaine and crack are seriously dangerous stimulants. They produce a “high” because of pleasurable sensations flooded into the brain. Cocaine is a very addictive drug that takes over addicts’ lives. Amphetamines are strong stimulants that give you energy and alertness and a mood “high”. If an overdose of amphetamines occur the central nervous system is overstimulated and the body goes into convulsions and death can occur.

Depressants are the opposite of stimulants. Instead of speeding up the central nervous system they slow it down, causing intoxication. Alcohol is the most common depressant. Binge drinking, or drinking five or more drinks in one sitting, is becoming far too widespread. Alcoholics, people with alcohol abuse problems, rely on alcohol and drink no matter its serious consequences.

Narcotics are drugs that increase relaxation and relieve pain and anxiety. The most powerful narcotics are morphine and heroin. Narcotics give you a “rush” of positive feeling. After the rush you experience a sense of well-being and peacefulness that lasts three to five hours. The more times you take heroin the more you become addicted and the harder it is to quit.

Hallucinogens are drugs that are capable of producing hallucinations, or changes in the mental process. The most common hallucinogen is marijuana. Marijuana effects typically consist of feelings of euphoria and general well-being.

Characterization of Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart

Analysis of Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart

The final sentence in Things Fall Apart would suggest that the District

Commissioner viewed the tribal characters as simple and incapable of deep understanding.

However, Achebe’s portrayal of the characters give each one great depth and complexity.

The perfect example of this contradiction would be the Okonkwo. The intricacy that

Achebe used in creating Okonkwo was astonishing. If the reader were to meet Okonkwo

in person, he or she would perceive Okonkwo as primitive. However, with Achebe’s

story of Okonkwo in the book, the reader can see that Okonkwo is a man that is struggling

to overcome everything he fears becoming. Okonkwo is terrified of being associated with

any resemblance of his father, Unoka. It is this single fear that pushes Okonkwo to lead

the life he does. Inner turmoil is constantly surrounding Okonkwo, but it is his disgust for

his father that ultimately determines the characteristics that Okonkwo will develop.

Though there are many characteristics providing depth to Okonkwo, I see him as an

insecure, chauvinistic, violent, and stoic man. All of these characteristics can be seen in

direct correlation with the other.

The largest contributor to Okonkwo’s character would be his insecurity, and it is

this insecurity that drives Okonkwo to be the man that he is. Okonkwo’s father is the

reason for Okonkwo’s insecure feelings. Unoka is a poor, cowardly man who never gets

anything accomplished. Okonkwo consciously adopts opposite ideals from his father, and

becomes the exact paradox of Unoka. Okonkwo’s ambition to become everything his

father is not eventually provides him with social and financial success. He is able, by

means of his own efforts, to attain a position of wealth and prestige, even though his father

dies, penniless and titleless, of a shameful illness. Although Okonkwo is able to achieve

social and financial acclaim, he is insistent to having an antagonistic personality to the

“soft” disposition that is his father’s. Okonkwo’s actions, through out the entire story, are

performed to continually preserve his masculinity. His masculinity is his way of proving

that he is a great warrior, and nothing like his cowardly father. Okonkwo, often,

overcompensates his actions for his insecurity, skewing his true feelings. This is evident in

his murder of Ikemefuma. Okonkwo’s actions are too close to killing a kinsman, which is

adamantly against his tribal culture. He is so afraid of looking weak that he is willing to

come close to breaking Igbo law in order to prove that he is a strong man. Okonkwo

performs many other actions to prove his strength, but it is with the entrance of the

European religion that the reader sees Okonkwo’s power begin to subside. Many of the

weaker tribesmen begin to involve themselves with Christianity, and the loss of these tribal

members diminish the importance of the tribal elite. The strong are unable to measure

themselves against the weak if the weak are no where to be found, being detrimental to

Okonkwo because much of his pride is base on the significance of his titles. Additionally,

Nwoye’s adoption of the Christian beliefs further undermine Okonkwo’s status and

prestige. It is at this point where Okonkwo’s hard work to distance himself from the

legacy of Unoka has been destroyed. Never the less, Okonkwo keeps his focus to

distinguish himself from anything resembling weakness. However, the church has changed

much of the Igbo culture, and Okonkwo fails to incite the interest of the clansmen with his

masculine behavior. In the end, despite his great success and prestige, Okonkwo dies

without recognition like his titleless, penniless father.

Okonkwo’s insecurity can be directly linked with his chauvinistic view of life.

Okonkwo associates Unoka with weakness, and with weakness he associates feminity.

Because his personality and behavior is so different from his father’s, he believes that his

actions constitute masculinity. In Okonkwo’s perception of life, to be strong, one must

exude masculinity. Unfortunately this is a very poor and chauvinistic way of life. With

this way of thinking, Okonkwo views things such as compassion, affection, and simple

conversation as feminine characteristics. Living by such beliefs will definitely result in a

poor relationship with family and friends. Even the lone successful relationship that

Okonkwo possesses with one of his children is tainted by chauvinism. Okonkwo wishes

that Ezinma, his favorite child, were a boy instead of a girl. It is unfortunate that the

relationship can not achieve its full potential because Okonkwo, with his ideals, must

associate Ezinma as a woman with feminine characteristics, characteristics that he forces

himself to despise. An extreme instance of chauvinism is seen when Okonkwo is exiled to

his motherland. The thought of being in his motherland, which represents femininity,

greatly upsets him furthering his unwillingness to admit to the feminine side of his

personality. Okonkwo shows no signs of changing his practice of his ideals. He lectures

his sons about the rash and violent nature of true masculinity, showing a refusal to believe

that such behavior is not a defining characteristic of a man. For many people, the persona

of a man is to be a loving and protecting father and husband. It is sad to see that

Okonkwo, with his skewed vision, is not capable of having a true relationship with anyone

because of his opinion of what a man is supposed to be.

Another characteristic of Okonkwo that ties closely into the prior two is his violent

nature. Many of Okonkwo’s violent actions stem from his insecurity and his ideals of

masculinity. Okonkwo’s accidental murder of the 16-year old boy may be paralleled with

his own violent nature. The gun that killed the boy represents Okonkwo. At one moment,

the gun is perfectly calm and steadfast, and explosive and unruly the next. This instability

is much like Okonkwo’s volatile nature. Okonkwo is very quick to act on his violent

feelings. This is seen with the abusive nature. He frequently beats is wives, and the only

emotion he allows himself to display is anger. His rash behavior affects his relations in the

Igbo community. The Igbo tribe tries hard to resolve problems with peace, but Okonkwo

often breaks the peace only to preserve his masculinity. When a rumor begins that a

convert has killed a sacred python, the clan comes to a peaceful solution rather than

retribute against the Christians. However, Okonkwo is unsatisfied with the resolution and

is adamant about a violent reaction. Many of Okonkwo’s actions are to preserve his

values and traditional way of life. This is his justification for the slaying of the Christian

messenger. Unfortunately, he is destroying his cultural laws in order to maintain them,

further exemplifing his volatile nature.

Okonkwo uses a stoic apearance to hide his true emotions. Again, he would view

any form of emotion as being feminine. Two characters contribute to paint a picture of

Okonkwo’s efforts to hide his feelings. The first would be his daughter Ezinma.

Although she is his favorite child, he refuses to show her any form of affection in order to

maintain his masculinity. However, Okonkwo secretly desires to have an affectionate

relationship with his sons, but he avoids admitting his desires because he fears affection as

a weakness. The second instance of Okonkwo hiding his feelings would be the murder of

Ikemefuma. Although Okonkwo views Ikemefuma as a son, he proceeds with the murder.

If he did not, he would be viewed as being weak. The sole purpose for Okonkwo’s stoic

nature is to hide the feminine characteristics he would show if he were to express his true

feelings.

Okonkwo is a much deeper character that would be inferred by the District

Commisioner’s book title. However, it is probably the characteristics that Okonkwo

portrayed that led the District Commissioner to the assumption that the Igbo people were

primitive. Okonkwo’s sheltering of his feelings and actions to hide his insecurity are the

characteristics that lead the District Commissioner to his opinion, Achebe is able to show

the reader the depth of Okonkwo. The reader is able to see that Okonkwo is so

emotionally torn to become everything that his father was not, that his unwilling to altar

from his values. It is this unwillingness to alter his personality that ultimately leads to

Okonkwo’s demise.

The Aspects of Love

The purpose for this paper is to express the perception that I received from being a member in the audience of The Aspects of Love. I will include my thoughts and feelings for some of the performances. I will also give an overview of the whole celebration.

The opening ceremony occurred at 70 p m, and the announcer gave a general introduction at the beginning of the performance. We were then enlightened with a couple of musical numbers, as well as a brief explanation of the meaning and the purpose of the celebration. The first speaker then announced the first aspect.

There were four aspects of love. The four aspects were looking for love, finding love, loosing love, and celebrating love. Sometimes people look for love in all the wrong places; however, after finding love people are not always satisfied with what they have found or what they have found is not satisfied with them. So having to experience the lost of love is not a good feeling. I suggest if you have a love that makes you feel good and healthy stick with it and celebrate having it.

The colors in the apparel and the stage set up blended together very well. The colors were soft and delightful to my eyes. The red the ladies and gentlemen had on really brought out the night. The lights corresponded with each piece especially the heart shape lighting at the beginning.

The dancers were very talented but I couldn’t really see how it was related to the play. The dancer costumes went perfect with their background. The dancers did a great a job.

I enjoyed all the musical numbers. It was evidence that a lot of hard work was put in. My favorite song was “Unforgettable” I feel Mr. Don Eastman did a wonderful job.

The Aspects of Love had a very heart filling meaning to it. I didn’t enjoy all the songs because I was not familiar with some of them. The over all celebration was nice.

The 0th-century French novelist Andr Malraux proclaimed that modern art begins with the great Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Born in 1746 in the Spanish province of Aragon, the fiercely independent and relentlessly innovative Goya tackled a wide range of media and subject matter over the course of his half-century career. One of Spains most celebrated artists, he served as a court painter to King Charles IV and counted such influential individuals as the renowned Duchess of Alba and royal adviser Manuel Godoy among his patrons. Though he suffered a near-fatal illness at age 47 that left him deaf, Goya went on to paint some of his most famous canvases, including his scandalous, at the time, Naked Maja.

This aspect of Goya, writes author Stanley Meisler, his portraits of women and his relations with them, has inflamed imaginations for generations. From his early tapestry designs to his compelling portraits, provocative gentlemens paintings, engaging genre scenes and satirical etchings and drawings, Goya portrayed the multifaceted world of womenstreet vendors, gypsies, noblewomen, heroines, old crones, mothers, mourners, and victims of violencewith a sensitivity and realism unparalleled in his time. Painting during the time of the French Revolutiona period when the role of women, at least in urban and upper-class society, was beginning to changeGoya was more ironic commentator than feminist advocate, and his attitude toward women was both ambivalent and complex.

Woman is goddess and witch for Goya, sinner and saint, lover and procurer, worker and aristocrat, says Francisco Calvo Serraller of Madrids Prado Museum. Calvo Serraller is the organizer and cocurator of a new exhibition, Goya Images of Women, that opened in Madrid last fall and is now on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. through June , 00. Guest curated in Washington by Janis A. Tomlinson, a leading authority on Goya, the show is accompanied by an illustrated catalog from the Gallery and Yale University Press.

There are very few artists, says Tomlinson, who were as proficient in as many media, who were constantly experimenting with new themes and who were always driven to go beyond where theyd been before.

Carpet Tacks

The best tack-type in nature has been the carpet-type of tack, as foretold in the beginning, time-wise. As luck would have it, all individuals, that have lived to a ripe old age, have had knowledgeness of the intensity of this majestic tack. The performance of an acid test on these carpet-type tacks, would in nature be one of the finer things in life, making anyone who had done this, be busy as a bee, work-wise. The coolness and sturdyism of these pompous tack-like objects in manner, could be defective, but, as far as these slow but sure makers of the tacks are concerned, they were the most non-explosionable objects ever, tack-wise. In the bitter end, being learned of the carpet tacks gracefullness is by far the greatest fox-like craziness, any organism could possibly ever contain within an object of such smallness, size-wise.

Walt Disney has been successful in making wonderful animated movies not just loved by the children but by other elders too. Disney succeeds in teaching our children a very vital lesson in life, how good looks and fame does not stand for true love. Beauty and the Beast, Walt Disney’s 11 instant classic, I consider the finest animated movie ever made, deserving a prominent position on my list of all-time greats. I always knew that Beauty and the Beast was one of my favorite movies, but not until recently my conscience discovered the fondness for this movie. Irresistible appears to be an apt description of this film because every frame is imbued with an exceptional magic for any motion picture, animated or otherwise.

As a child Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella contributed to be my favorite movies, but I guess Beauty and the Beast definitely changed my opinion. On the contrary, now it has become a ritual or a passion to watch every weekend with my niece, bringing hilarity for my peers. My friends laughed and told me about my impulse for this movie. For some reason, I did not take their joke seriously at first until I realized how many times I have watched it with my niece.

I remember this one time my friend, Alicia, having a guy problem. Her boyfriend, Jamie, often acted “high and mighty”, and Ali (Alicia) did not like that attitude a tad. She told me how her boyfriend mistreated one of her friends because her monetary status did not match with Jamie’s or Ali’s. At that point, Jamie reminded me of the Beast, once a conceited young prince who turned away a beggar woman who came to his door for shelter from the storm. In return the beggar woman who turned out to be a beautiful enchantress placed a spell on the castle, and only when the prince learned to love and be loved the curse would break. When I correlated the Beast with Jamie, Alicia chuckled saying something about my itch for this movie which in reality made me ponder on her mock. Even though Alicia was not the only person to spot the remarks that I somehow relate to this movie, the thought of my obsession remained indigestible. Does relating little incidents with film’s concept in our life mean obsession with the movie?

After that, for the last two years, for the Halloween dinner, I have been making my niece dress like Belle, the main character of the story. Consequently, last year her mother, apparently my sister, instantly said, “Ah, Belle from Beauty and the Beast must be your aunt Shivangi.” Right that minute I realized that maybe I do have a little craze for this movie. Apart from the Halloween excuse, even the screen saver on my personal computer is of Belle and the beast downloaded straight from the Disney website, “supposedly” for my niece’s love for that movie. This brings to my attention that I used my niece simply as a scapegoat to hide my passion for this film.

What makes this brilliant movie different? Why do I love watching it over and over again? Well this film seems different from those usual fairy tales where the prince rescues the princess, and they fall in love with each other. In this motion picture, Marian Belle, the main character of the narrative, lived with her father- a nutty inventor. Hence, that gave the town people the idea of Belle being a little out of the ordinary. Her name means beauty, and it is revealed by her magnificent appearance throughout the duration of the movie. Gaston, the dignified warrior of the town, wanted by every girl, displays true love for Belle. Surprisingly, Belle sees right through his beauty and recognizes him as an unkind and conceited fool who does not know how to love.

Meanwhile, when Belle’s father is locked in the dungeon by the hideous beast in his castle, Belle agrees to be a prisoner instead for the rest of her life. This shows the family values in her character, again teaching us the most important aspect of life love. Further in the movie, Belle resides in the castle with no fear for the beast. She teaches him how to eat, live, act, and read like human beings which results in love between them. At first Belle does not realize about the feelings developed in her heart for the beast, but the gruesome monster shows his love for Belle by releasing her from his imprisonment to go help her father. In the end, when the last petal of the rose given by the enchantress is about to fall, Belle confesses her love for the beast breaking the spell on the castle. This closure shows that love can convert an evil and unkind man into a generous loveable individual.

My favorite characters in this movie consist of the three playful servants of the prince. Lumiere, the castle maitre d’, turned into a candlestick after the curse; Mrs. Potts, the housekeeper, changed into a teapot along with her fun-loving son Chip, turned into a teacup; and last but not the least, Cogsworth was the castle’s butler changed into a clock. Mrs. Potts guided the enchanted beast on how to talk and deal with Belle’s emotions, thoroughly aware of the consequences if anything went wrong. Lumiere and Cogsworth always fought on silly comments each had and not failing to serve their master by guiding him how to impress Belle. In my opinion, these three characters played a vital role and contributed equally in their love story.

This animated motion picture has various special editions, too. For instance, Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Christmas, an insertion into the story is about Belle deciding to organize a secret Christmas Eve party without the permission of the beast and how Belle’s love makes the master change his opinion about Christmas. Along with this, a recently released special edition of Beauty and the Beast Belle’s Magical World is a full-length movie that brims with delightful stories and songs, and all my favorite characters and voice cast from the acclaimed and beloved movie masterpiece. From these versions, I discovered how true friendship and cooperation can turn a gloomy castle into an enchanted palace fit for a Princess like Belle. When I went to see these movies, I was amazed to know that I am not the only fan of Belle and the Beast.

After all these facts I honestly confess that, yes, I am a fan of Disney’s movie Beauty and the Beast. When I relate day to day conversations of my life with this movie, it just tells me what important place it occupies in my heart and mind. But nothing can now change my craze for this intriguing movie. I am sure from this moment my niece will not be used as an excuse to hide my obsession for this movie, and I will continue to watch this family movie. In fact, I plan to go buy the other two additional versions of the film for myself and not just for my six year old niece. According to my standpoint, this romantic tale teaches us that love can change ones attitude and conveys a significant message that inner beauty has more important than physical appearances for true love.

This ageless tale proves to be a family feature that someone over the age of eighteen can venture into without an accompanying child. I unquestionably find this movie irresistible and certainly continue watching it repeatedly.

Why I chose this topic

As used as it is, students still find it difficult to understand most of the uses of the ing form. I do not believe there is any other member of all parts of speech that has such a wide range of functions and as much influence on our daily talks and writings as the ing form. It is interesting to note that, standing alone, the gerund can function as noun, as verbs in non-finite noun clauses, as the complement of to be, as object of a preposition. Moreover, the difficulty that the ing form posses regarding its translation into Spanish is also a matter to be considered. These are the reasons why I decided to focus my essay on this topic.

To begin with, the gerund is a noun in the form of the present participle of a verb (that is ending in ing) which not only may be qualified by adjectives and adverbs but also it can be used with an article and can have a plural form, while the participles either function as verbal adjectives or operate as verbs in non-finite clauses.

In my opinion, the most commonly known function of the ing form from the student viewpoint is that used in continuous tenses. Sentences including this form are intended to express simultaneity between the action and the time of speaking or between two or more actions which have not yet been finished, -as in the case of the Present Continuous and the Past Continuous- or which have just stopped -as in the case of the Present Perfect Continuous.

However, being able to determine when to use the ing form is not that simple. To begin with, there are several verbs that are followed by ing, such as enjoy, mind, suggest, stop, delay, imagine, consider, admit, miss, involve. Enclosed as annex “A” I listed most of the verbs I could find fitting within this classification. But studying this complete list will not be sufficient to know when to use ing. In fact, there are also some phrasal verbs when after which we should also use the ing form, such as give up; put off; carry on; go on and keep on.

When one verb follows another verb, it is not easy for foreign learners to determine whether they have to use the structure verb + -ing or the structure verb + to…. It may be helpful to mention two guidelines to distinguish which form of the verb should be used a) the distinction general (for using ing) vs. particular (when using the infinitive; and b) that we often use ing for an action that takes place before the first verb or at the same time, i.e. “She admitted stealing the money”. On the contrary, we frequently use the structure verb + to… for an action that follows the first verb, i.e. “She decided to steal the money”. Needless to say, this difference does not apply to all uses of ing and to… In fact, some verbs can be followed by ing or to… with differences of meaning in all sentences including, as an example, the verbs remember, regret, try, need, etc.

If a preposition is followed by a verb, such verb should carry the ing form. In this connection, students should bear in mind that “to” is also a preposition and therefore they cannot assume that the word “to” is always a part of the infinitive. An example of this misleading appearance of the “to” word is that of the structure “to be/get used to”, after which we cannot use the infinitive. In fact the word “to” in said structure is a preposition, after which an ing verb must follow. Finally, there are also several expressions which, when followed by a verb, the verb ends in ing, such as those mentioned in the attached annex “B”. (Page 14/5 Murphy). But the gerund is not only used when a verb follows a preposition, but also when a verb follows a prepositional verb or a phrasal verb.

So far I have only explained some of the features of the ing form when used in verbs. However, there are may adjectives ending in ing, such as boring, interesting, tiring, satisfying, depressing, amusing; exciting, etc. It is interesting to note, and student almost find it easy to learn that the ending in ing adjectives are not used to describe people, but to describe situations or objects. When we are describing the way people feel about different situations, we use the ed form, as opposed to the ing. Therefore, we would find the following adjectives bored; interested; tired; satisfied; depressed; amused; excited, etc.

Children of a Lesser God Randa Hainess Children of a Lesser God might have impressed this writer more if

he hadnt already seen the directors much better Dance with Me, a film that empl

oys similar cinematic clich¨¦s to much greater effect. This 186 offering ¡Âª a cu

lt favorite among fans of mushy faux sentimentality ¡Âª attempts to tell the story

of John Leeds (William Hurt), a special-education teacher, and his increasingly

complex relationship with the deaf and mute Sarah (Marlee Martin), a former stude

nt who now works as a janitor. Although Leeds initially wants nothing more than t

o teach the reclusive prodigy how to speak, he finds himself coming increasingly

under her spell. Eventually the pair becomes lovers ¡Âª a fact that doesnt sit we

ll with either the schools principal (Philip Bosco) or Sarahs estranged but sti

ll overprotective mother (Piper Laurie). The films flaws arent in the performan

ces, which are consistently exquisite (Marlee Matlin took home a Best Actress Osc

ar for her work here, but William Hurts portrayal of Leeds is no less striking,

emphasizing the conflicting emotions his character supposedly is feeling). The pr

oblem with Children of a Lesser God is that such atypical characters are forced t

o share the screen with a plot unworthy of their charisma and ideals. Very little

of the story is devoted to the unique problems of a relationship between a deaf

woman and a hearing man, including their difficulty finding a happy medium betwee

n sound and silence. Worst of all, the few token struggles that the characters ar

e forced to deal with are handled in such a trite fashion that its hard to take

them seriously. So much potential existed for thoughtful, introspective drama tha

t the storys reliance on formula is, quite simply, inexcusable. Unfortunately, P

aramounts DVD presentation of the film doesnt improve the rather mediocre impre

ssion modern viewers are likely to be left with once the movies credits begin to

roll. Apart from a lovely anamorphic widescreen transfer (in an unspecified aspe

ct ratio that appears to be 1.851) and a rather mundane theatrical trailer, ther

es little to interest the digital connoisseur. Keep-case.

Lewis Carroll 18 - 188

This imaginative and humorous writer, Charles Dodgeson, was born in Daresbury, Cheshire, England in 18. He was the eldest son of a large family, so besides having a neglected childhood, Dodgeson was often left with the responsibility of entertaining his younger sisters. That job greatly contributed to Dodgeson’s love and sympathy for children; especially little girls.

His education began with his father teaching him the basics at home and at Richmond Grammar School. Later on in 151, Dodgeson attended Christ Church College of Oxford University. The honors he received there earned him a lifetime fellowship and residency at Christ Church, if he were willing to become a clergyman of the Church of England, and vow never to marry. He accepted this offer and decided to live and work at Oxford University.

During his adult life, Dodgeson had some personal issues. He was diagnosed with insomnia and neurosis; both which greatly affected him mentally. Along with these, and a name change, Dodgeson also had a dual personality in which changed him to being less conservative and religious to more liberal and thinking things out logically.

By 1857, Dodgeson had started publishing mathematical theses and essays on logic. Both of these being dry and dull subjects, he brought them to life with his “quirky sense of humor, whimsy, and fun.” (Stanley, Deborah. Novels for Students. Pages 18-1) After being published, Dodgeson came up with his more recognizable name, Lewis Carroll; his ‘pen name’. Besides writing and publishing his works, he became passionate about taking photographs. It was a new invention that intrigued him. So, he combined his interests, and made a hobby out of taking pictures of little girls; the daughters of his boss, the reverend.

He became friends with the three girls, Lorina, Edith, and Alice, and enjoyed entertaining them. It was actually on a boat trip that Carroll took the girls on when he was first came up with the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Originally meant for private entertainment purposes, the imaginative story was published as a book in 1865, thirty three years before he died. This is the masterpiece that made his reputation as a writer of nonsense and children’s fiction.

̔

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of Carroll’s most famous works. Although intended for children, with the fantasy-like characters, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a tale people of all ages have enjoyed. Carroll’s interests and aspects of his life are clearly revealed in this book containing lines of prose with an unrealistic, yet, whimsical and humorous twist. Many references to the Victorian Era, the time period Carroll lived in, are also shown throughout the story.

Carrolls interest in young girls is mirrored through the identity of the protagonist in this book. She is a seven year old girl, Alice, who asked a lot of ‘why’ questions, and thought everything out logically. This character closely resembled Carroll’s favorite real-life child, Alice. She too was “adept at asking challenging and disconcerting questions, and enjoyed teasing and logical argument.” (Moss, Joyce and George Wilson. Literature and its Times. Page )

Carroll was known to have an obsessively negative association with eating which could have been because of his neurosis. This feature of his mind is reflected in the story. For example, the consequence of Alice eating and drinking is a change in her size. The Knave of Hearts is put on trial for allegedly stealing the Queens tarts, with a penalty of beheading. Also, the consequence of the Duchess cooking with too much pepper is everyone continually sneezing.

His double personality is also shown through some characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. For example, the animals have opposing identities. Alices cat Dinah is greedy, while the Wonderland animals are “victimous”. When Alice falls down the rabbit hole, top and bottom become one, demonstrating an undecided and split up event. At one point, Alice plans to assume others identities when she says

“I shall only look up and say, “Who am I, then? Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, Ill come up if not, Ill stay down here till Im somebody else” (Carroll, Lewis. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Chapter .

) Alice also assumes the positions of juror, jury, and witness at the trail; all containing extremely different personalities and opinions. During a croquet game, Alice undertakes the roles of a punisher and the punished. First, she accuses the Queen of cheating, and then Alice cheats herself. This directly relates with Carroll’s problem with having a split personality.

Carroll’s sleeping difficulties, related with his insomnia, are reflected in his literature. There is an emphasis on sleep in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. At the mad tea party, the dormouse cant stay awake, and throughout the whole story, Alice is actually dreaming.

Carroll lived during the Victorian era, which influenced his writing. In the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts overcomes the King both in size and power. Also, the Duchess overpowers her husband and is in control of the household.

This was also an era with a characteristic of punctuality. This is reflected in the White Rabbits extremely paranoid reaction to his lateness, in which he repeatedly says “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!” (Carroll, Lewis. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Chapter 1)

The Victorian time period was also characteristic of a rigid class structure. This is displayed in his writing when Alice regularly insults the Wonderland creatures, especially the smaller ones.

Carroll had a somewhat neglected childhood, which also greatly influenced his writing. His negative experience with babies is reflected in Alices Adventures in Wonderland when the Duchesss baby is a nuisance because it cries so much, and then it turns into a pig and is left in the woods.

Lewis Carroll was a very eccentric man, both in his life and his writing. It is apparent that his chief interests were logic and little girls, both frequently referenced to in his writing. He is the author of one of the most popular novels, to both children and adults. Many of the unique occurrences in his literature can be attributed to similar experiences he encountered in his life.

Chekhov’s story, A Chameleon, centres on the injustice of the Russian society and the privileges received by the upper class. Chekhov lived in a society where the only peaceful way to bring about a change in conditions was to educate people of the societys shortcomings through the use of satire. Therefore Chekhov’s purpose in writing the story is to draw his reader’s attention to the inequalities in society, in an attempt to bring about reform.

He does this through the literary techniques used to convey his point of view, in particular the humorous nature of the story and its characters.

Chekhov uses caricature, irony, and hyperbole to enhance the comic situation that he depicts.

He also uses descriptive writing, dialogue and irony to communicate his message.

The comical situation that is being relayed in the story immediately draws the attention of the reader. The police superintendent, Otchumyelov, fluctuates in his decision regarding the fate of a dog that has bitten a mans finger, while a crowd of townsfolk watch as Hryukin, who received the bite, makes attempts at revenge on the dog. ‘On his half drunken face is plainly written “I’ll pay you out, you rogue!”’, ‘I must have damages, for I shan’t be able to use this finger for a week, may be.’

The dog is described as ‘the culprit who has caused the sensation’. The reader sees that it is ludicrous to be calling a dog a culprit, and just as ludicrous for Hryukin to expect justice to be carried out on the animal.

The ridiculous situation is intensified when Otchumyelov makes a great effort to find who owns the dog so that it can be brought to justice. ‘Whose dog is it? I won’t let this pass! I’ll teach them to let their dogs run all over the place!... find out whose dog it is and draw up a report!’

Even Hryukin’s attempt to catch the dog is ridiculous, as we are told that Hryukin ‘runs after her, and throwing his body forward falls down and seizes the dog by her hind legs.’ Such an effort to catch a small dog, when the only damage the dog did was to make Hryukin’s finger bleed, is clearly foolishness.

The situation is absurd, and we see that all involved lack a sense of proportion in regards to the importance of events.

Chekhov enhances the humour through the use of caricature. The actions of the characters and the way that they perceive and react to the situation is exaggerated to provide humour, but also to achieve the authors purpose in showing the shortcomings of the society.

Hryukin is described as ‘holding his right hand in the air and displaying a bleeding finger to the crowd... and indeed the very finger has the look of a flag of victory.’

Chekhov builds upon the caricature of Hryukin by juxtaposing the dog and Hryukin, who is described as ‘a great hulking fellow’, while the dog is only ‘a little dog.’

Otchumyelov is also made into a caricature, as he constantly changes his mind based on who he believes the dog belongs to. ‘Whose dog is it? I won’t let this pass! I’ll teach them to let their dogs run all over the place! It’s time these gentry were looked after, if they won’t obey the regulations! When he’s fined, the blackguard, I’ll teach him what it means to keep dogs and such stray cattle! I’ll give him a lesson! ... find out whose dog it is and draw up a report! And the dog must be strangled. Without delay! It’s sure to be mad.’

When it is suggested that General Zhigalov owns the dog, Otchumyelov’s response changes considerably, and he shifts the blame from the dog to Hryukin. ‘You take it to the General’s, and inquire there. Say I found it and sent it. And tell them not to let it out into the street... It may be valuable dog, and if every swine goes sticking a cigar in its mouth, it will soon be ruined.’

This indecisiveness is enhanced by Otchumyelov being first warm, and taking his coat off, ‘help me off with my coat, Yeldrin... it’s frightfully hot!, then changing his mind, deciding it is cold. ‘help me on with my overcoat, Yeldrin my lad... the wind’s getting up... I am cold.’

This portrayal causes the reader to see Otchumyelov as an indecisive and foolish creature, bordering on stupid.

Chekhov makes great use of irony to convey the purpose of the story to his readers.

When Otchumyelov first makes an attempt to find the owner of the dog, he states ‘It’s time these gentry were looked after, if they won’t obey the regulations!’A little further on he states ‘When he’s fined, the blackguard...’ Here Chekhov uses irony on two levels. Firstly, after referring to the owner of the dog as a member of the gentry, or aristocratic class, he then refers to them as a blackguard, or reprobate. In the context of the story it would be unusual to refer to a member of the aristocracy in this way, as they would be treated with respect. It was taken for granted that all ‘blackguards’ generally came from the lower classes of society.

On another level however, this is ironic as Otchumyelov bases his decision regarding the fate of the dog on how wealthy and powerful the person who owns it is. When he discovers that it belongs to the General’s brother, he quickly decides in favour of the powerful General, concluding that Hryukin is in the wrong, and allowing the gentry to disobey the regulations.

Another ironic comment in regards to the message communicated in the story is Hryukin’s comment that ‘We are all equal nowadays.’ As clearly demonstrated in the story, this is not the case.

Chekhov also uses irony when Otchumyelov states that ‘A dog is a delicate animal.’. While he is willing to say this when he believes that the General may own it, when he believes it is owned by a common person he orders it to be strangled.

While the irony employed by Chekhov acts as humour in the story, there is a more serious purpose behind it. By using irony Chekhov’s purpose is to draw his reader’s attention to the faults and injustice in the Russian society.

Chekhov uses hyperbole to achieve his purpose, both to add to the humour in the story, and to cause the reader to observe shortcomings of the society by drawing their attention to the characters and their actions.

The character of Hryukin is exaggerated, with him being described as ‘a great hulking fellow’. Also his actions are exaggerated, such as when he catches the dog, ‘He runs after her, and throwing his body forward falls down and seizes the dog by her hind legs.’ It is not necessary for Hryukin to go to such efforts to catch a dog. When Otchumyelov investigates we see Hryukin ‘holding his right hand in the air and displaying a bleeding finger to the crowd’. Again, this reaction is unnecessary for a simple bleeding finger.

In addition, Chekhov uses hyperbole when describing the market square where the event took place. We are told that ‘The open doors of the shops and taverns look out upon God’s world disconsolately, like hungry mouths; there is not even a beggar near them.’ Following this description, which gives the reader the impression of desertion, we are told that when the disturbance takes place, a crowd ‘seems to have sprung out of the earth’. Clearly Chekhov has exaggerated the arrival of the crowd, however, the fact that a crowd has surrounded the timber yard simply because Hryukin has received a dog bite also demonstrates Chekhov’s use of hyperbole.

When Hryukin exclaims ‘Biting is prohibited nowadays!’, followed by ‘If everyone is going to be bitten, life won’t be worth living...’, Chekhov is using hyperbole to subtly insinuate that in Russian society, there is no freedom and even biting is prohibited. While a person would not be permitted to make this observation openly, by implying in a story that there is a lack of freedom in society, Chekhov could communicate his message without being prevented from doing so.

The story mainly consists of dialogue. This enhances what is said by the characters, and allows Chekhov to demonstrate his purpose through their speech. The use of present tense accentuates this, leading the reader to understand that Chekhov is referring to the society in which he lives.

Through the dialogue spoken by Otchumyelov in particular, we see how power and wealth influence the decision of those appointed to maintain justice.

Finally, Chekhov conveys his purpose through the use of descriptive writing.

The phrase, ‘look out upon God’s world disconsolately’ brings a feeling of despair to the reader. The use of ‘disconsolately’ in particular has negative connotations for the reader, and the senses the hopelessness in Chekhov’s tone.

Chekhov uses excessive detail both to make the story more comical, but also to communicate the purpose of the story through the use of an over-casual tone in the description. The reader sees this tone in the excessive use of detail, and this leads them to understand that Chekhov is subtly referring to the society in which he lives.

We see Chekhov’s excessive description when he includes details such as ‘A red-haired policeman’ who ‘strides after him with a sieve full of confiscated gooseberries in his hands’, ‘The open doors of the shops and taverns look out upon God’s world disconsolately, like hungry mouths; there is not even a beggar near them.’, ‘Otchumyelov makes a half turn to the left and strides towards the crowd.’

In addition to this Chekhov includes unnecessary details in the conversations which take place.

He includes this detail to make the situation seem more commonplace, and something that might occur everyday. It is this that causes the reader to understand that he refers to the Russian society, as they can relate the situation to their everyday activities in their villages. However the use of exaggeration emphasises the faults in the society.

In conclusion, Chekhov achieves his purpose of revealing the shortcomings of the Russian system of justice, through his use of exaggeration, caricature, description, irony, and dialogue.

He provides a comical situation involving humorous characters, however through this his readers see Chekhov’s purpose and his attempt to address the inequalities within the Russian society, hence allowing him to bring about reform through his satire.

Time Management For College Students

When we say Time management,it might occur to some of us that its something complicated only experts and intelligent people can do it,while some of us will say that their times are always managed and they dont realise that its not.

Time management is a skill few people master, but it is one that most people need(Truer,00).

Time cant be managed, time is uncontrollable we can only manage ourselves and our use of time.

Everybodys time needs to be managed, from the school student to the university student to the working adult. In this essay,Im going to talk about us,college students of how we waste our time without realising that and I will give some advice of how to manage out times in the best way.

In order to manage your time effectively you need to know the things and habits you do that steal your time. Then try to list all of them and find a solution for each of them.On a pad of paper, log in interruptions as they occur over a few days. Put down who brings them to you, how long each interruption lasts, and whether or not they were valuable or of no value. Once you accumulate your data, get the most frequent interrupters who bring the interruptions with no value to change their actions and agree to not bring as many low value interruptions to you in the future.(Donald Wetmore,001)

For example,Id determine two hours to study a special chapter, during these two hours a friend of mine might call me up asking me to explain her something about an assignment(and of course I cant say no to my friend) and lets say that this phone call will take 0 minutes from my time. After that my sister will tell me that my favourite soap is showing,so Id rush to watch it which will take another 40 minutes.A whole hour has been wasted in silly things instead of studying that chapter. So,Ill continue reading the chapter in the remaining hour and it will pass too quickly that I wont finish it,so Id procrastinate it to another day, although Ill be having more chapters to read till that day which will lead me to have extra study hours.

Three things interrupted me and stole my time;a phone call, television,my inability to say no and procrastination.Watching TV and talking on the phone arent always time stealers, but in my case they were. You can watch TV and chat on the phone in your break time or when you fnish your studies, not during a studying plan.

I shouldve had the ability to say noto my friend and ask her to call me back later,or Ill call her back later myself once I finish my studies. And instead of watching that soap,I shouldve recorded it to watch it in my break time or in the weekend. If I have done these things,I wouldnt have to procrastinate my studies to some other time. Procrastination occurs when we deliberately choose to delay or omit a behavior that we believe we should do.(Jeffrey Gordon,16) And, The easiest way to avoid procrastination in your day is to do the Daily Planning each day.(Donald Wetmore,001)

Also,as my schedule is loaded from Saturday to Tues(8 am-4 pm),I only have six hours to write my homeworks and do some studies and revisions. So,when I get back from the university I feel too exhausted to start anything,so I plan to eat and get some sleep for an hour, but instead of that once I come back and see my family sitting,I cant stop myself from sitting with them and chat about my day. So,I keep on chatting for hours and hours. After that I feel totally exhausted to do anything,so I go to sleep and my day has been wasted on nothing!

When I plan my day,I should stick to it,otherwise my whole day is unproductive.Time management is doing the right things.(Donald Wetmore,00)

So,always face your time stealers and try to get rid of them and if they were habits try to reduce them step by step.

Now its time to manage your time in an effective way,and there are many benefits from managing your time,It can provide a guide for putting your intentions into action, lowering you stress, and helping you achieve your goals.(Carlson,1)

It isnt just like that, time management helps you to organize your whole life.Students like us are the most students who need an effective time management, because we are the most people who have loaded schedules, different than working people and school students.

Have you ever felt that you want to accomplish thousands of things during this semester?

You might want to get an A in the most courses, you might want to do the best projects,u might want to participate in as many societies as you could( which will require extra work),you might want to enjoy your time with your friends and hang out with them every now and then, but how could you all that during a 15 week semester??

You might feel that its impossible and you cant do it,but have you ever asked yourself why can other students accomplish all that and more??

I think the answer is easy, its because they manage their time so effectively, but getting everyone to do it is hard, because not all people have the skills to manage their times.

One person is able to manage their time more effectively than the other person. This does not mean that one person works harder, but rather, the person who accomplishes more in less time has figured out how to work smarter.(Pagewise,00)

I will try my best to give you the best tips and advice to manage your time during your semester with great accomplishments.

First of all,you have to remember all the things you want to do in this day, this week, this month or this year, and of course you cant remember the same things everyday,Your thoughts are valuable, write them down( Woodgold) so always keep a daily list(Archer,00) and a calendar. And on your daily list write down everything you want to do today and read them every now and then to add new things.Set the important things, such as quizzes,mid-semesters and the last day to hand your projects on you calendar. You maybe listing some other things such as,shopping , goingto the movies and meeting your friends.Of course you should hang out every now and then in order to accomplish the best,so fun should be included in your list.Number your things from most important(1) to less important (10).Focus on each thing you want to do and see if you have the materials, such as researches and handouts from the teacher,so that you be sure that you can fnish the assignment on the scheduled time.Sometimes when you see your list, you dont feel like doing anything, but once youve started, you begin feeling more motivated to continue doing it,so dont worry if you didnt feel like studying.Or if you still cant study, take a short break to something you like to do,such as listening to music, then youll feel guilty that youre doing something you are not supposed to do,so youll go back studying.

If you have some difficult lessons or homeworks should be done, give the priority to them especially at the beginning of your day to get rid of them,as theyll be the only things you think about most of your time.

Give youself ten minutes(Gordon,16).If you managed to finish an assignment in an hour and you finished it ten minutes before, then you can have a rest before you start your next study. If you get up ten minutes earlier in the morning, you wont have to rush. If you leave for class or an appointment ten minutes earlier, you arrive on time, regardless of traffic or parking. That extra ten minutes reduces stress, and it also reduces the likelihood that you will make a mistake because you are hurrying. That extra ten minutes adds quality to your life.(Gordon,16)

Never give up any work for no reason, because if you did, then you have to add extra hours to your next schedule which will make you more exhausted and unable to focus and understand very well, and this will limit your break time.

In conclusion ,dont forget that time management isnt just a list to write down what to do,its something that will make you comfortable the rest of you life. Time management is not necessarily working harder, but rather smarter(Wetmore).

After all Time management is managing yourself when following some basic time management principles.(Treuer,00)

The lesson to learn is that the more time we spend planning our time and activities the more time we will have for those activities. By setting goals and eliminating time wasters and doing this everyday you may find you will have extra time in the week to spend on those people and activities most important to you.
