Holly, through his characterization and others, does not invite us to call him a hero. In fact, he is seen as a blundering American who superimposes Western culture over the complex European culture. His anti-hero-like character is captured by the use of unique camera angles, and his heroism is only portrayed partly in the film.

Holly is depicted as a naïve, unsophisticated American who is easily deceived by his perception and other characters. He takes action straight from his first impressions like an amateur detective, not knowing how complex the world around him can be, as Calloway warns him Go home…You dont know what youre mixing in. As Calloway suggested, Deaths at the bottom of everything, and Holly unintentionally gets two innocent people killed - Paine and the porter - who a Western hero would have never let it happen. His ignorance and vacillation is another factor leading to the conclusion of Holly as an anti-hero. Whilst carrying his illusions of Harry, he does not want to believe the truth that his best friend is just about the worst racketeer wanted by the police, yet once he accepts the truth, he is reluctant to help the authorities take Holly in because of his love for Anna.

Other characters in The Third Man help us to decide that Holly is not a hero. Many characters, such as Calloway and Anna despise Holly. When Calloway asks Anna to see her passport at Annas apartment, Holly is minimized in significance, and is ignored by the both of them. Even the camera follows the two, and leaves Holly in the corner of the frame. Annoyed at Hollys superimposition of America and Viennas culture, Calloway replies, This isnt Santa Fe. Im not a sheriff and you arent a cowboy. He constantly encourages Holly to go back home, telling him that he is not capable of solving the crime, hence cannot play the hero. Anna is always pictured stronger than Holly, and he is looked down upon. The positioning of her standing up and him sitting down when they have a quarrel represents her superiority. Even animals like the cat and the parrot are shown to invite us to view Holly negatively. Moreover, in the famous ferris wheel scene, Harry emphasises the point that no one is a hero - Oh Holly, you and I arent heroes, - and as to emphasise that, Anna just walks past Holly in the ending sequence unlike a Western hero-heroine story.

The only time when the camera captures Holly as a hero is when he is confronting Harry at the fairground where he is shot at a low camera angle, and when he has shot Harry in the sewer with light shining on him from behind. Other times, he is illustrated as an isolated anti-hero figure. His first meeting with the porter is shot from a long high camera angle, suggesting that he is isolated and inferior. The angled shots often portray Hollys skewed vision, showing his deceived perception. When he thinks he is abducted on the way to the lecture theatre on the car, the vertical bars propose a sense of entrapment. Holly sees several watchers on the dark streets, and the camera shoots them slanted, implying his deceived perception and paranoia that he is being kidnapped to be killed.

Throughout the film, Holly is often portrayed as an anti-hero who arrogantly tries to be the lone-rider out of his own fictional story. The characterization of Holly as being innocent to the extent of foolish induces us to view him scornfully. As to support this, other characters in The Third Man and the film techniques also picture him in a negative manner, reminding us that the world doesnt make heroes outside [Hollys] stories.
