Fasting Feasting is one of the most interesting novels I have read. Desai describes in depth a universe of contrasts, a duality of visions between two cultures India and America. The author describes the Indian family to every single detail of existence. The Indian family clings to traditions, while in America consumers constantly seek the newest and the fastest. The structure of this novel is very simple. It is divided into two parts. First part of the book highlights the Indian traditions, the cultures and mostly the place of a woman, called Uma, in her Indian family. Uma lives together with her mother and father, her younger sister Aruna and her younger brother Arun, in a strict but subtle family. Uma loves being in school, but because of her failures at tests, and of her newly born brother, her parents take her out of school to prepare her for marriage. Unfortunately it turns out to be rather difficult to find her a husband. After two attempts, their family ends up with disgrace and have spent two dowries for nothing. Uma does not seem to be too unhappy about it, she is more eager about getting back in school, and interested in her distant relative’s, Mira-masi, pilgrim routes with religious rituals. In the second part you follow Arun’s period of study in America. Arun, whose birth gave a higher status to their family, was sent off to study since it is important for boys to get educated. He has a hard time dealing with this culture with freedom,self-denying and self-indulgence, since it is totally opposite to his own. He lives together with an American family, the Pattons. They have a refrigerator and freezer packed with meat that no one eats, and since Mrs. Patton who is desperate to become a vegetarian, like Arun, is thrilled over his arrival. Their daily round turns into a hysterical shopping for vegetables, but what he really wants is to be ignored, to be invisible and left alone. He also discovers that the daughter in this family suffers from something, which later turns out to bulimia, and he feels very bad about it. He wishes that Mrs. Patton would pay her daughter and the rest of the family more attention, instead of him.


Fasting Feasting is very well written and with accurate details, it is definitely joyful read. The more I reflect on the novel, the more I am impressed with Desai’s insight and intelligence.
