In the story ¡§Volcano,¡¨ the protagonist, a hostess of a homestead, has lived closely to a volcano for twenty-seven years. Her husband has to leave home to work for two weeks and stay home in the following two weeks, so the hostess always solves problems by her own. She feels tired of this kind of life, but she can¡¦t control it. By the way of describing the process of the volcano¡¦s eruption, the volcano is actually a symbol of the protagonist¡¦s emotions and feelings.

First of all, the disorderness created by the volcano is a symbol of the confusion that the protagonist feels about her life. She has spent most of her lifetime to take care of the homestead, to feed the animals, and to finish the chores, which are her responsibilities and heavy burdens as well. However, twenty-seven years¡¦ toil doesn¡¦t get any good for her. Her family is broken¡Xher son lost his arm, her daughter always wanted to leave the homestead, and her husband was never home when things happen. Therefore, she starts to be uncertain about what she has been waiting for after these years.

Furthermore, the dark cloud of ash symbolizes the protagonist¡¦s depression. The monotonic life is like the clock on the wall, whirling in the small circle. Time has passed by, but she is still in the circle of life. She doesn¡¦t see any hope in her life. Although she wants to have some change, she can¡¦t leave her responsibilities and the homestead. This makes her depressed. She feels that she has no alternatives to do anything about her life, just like ¡§[she] can¡¦t do anything about a volcano.¡¨

The eruption of the volcano is symbolic to that the protagonist has been pushed to a point of eruption as well. She has completely depressed about having a change. She doesn¡¦t fear about the volcano to kill her because it is pointless for her to carry on her life. Actually, she even wishes the volcano to bring destruction, when she remarks, ¡§it has come to wanting a disaster that is beyond anything I can handle.¡¨ And therefore she can escape the homestead without worrying about the responsibilities.
