Shinto is a Chinese word meaning “Way of the Gods”. The Shinto Religion has no fonder, no sacred scriptures, and no moral code, and no ruling body. It is believed to be the most common religion amongst the Japanese today and was one of the earliest religions in that area. When the Shinto religion first started is mainly consisted of military groups also known as samurais. They wanted to distinguish them selves from Buddhism and Confucianism and were considered to be at the top of the social ladder in Japan.

Shinto’s have and optimistic view of life and believe in no absolute right or wrong and that nobody is perfect also that all humans are good and evil is caused by evil spirits. Shinto’s creation story starts with the two gods Izanamo (goddess of earth) and Izanagi (god of sky and heaven). Together they formed the Japanese islands as their children but Izanamo died after giving birth to the last island and from here three more gods were created Amaterasu (sun goddess) which is considered to be the most important god (kami) Tsukiyomi (moon god) and Susano (storm god). This is similar to the Christian creation story but only one god created earth and then he sent his son to earth and he died for all Christians.

Shinto’s today worship through many shrines, festivals and rituals where they ask their gods for continues blessing and good favour and they express their gratitude towards their gods. Shinto’s go to shrines to pray for many things such as good health, business success to good exam performances. In the Shinto Church many Shinto’s hold a large number of wedding ceremonies but they will not hold funerals as death is considered to be evil. Consequently there a practically no Shinto cemeteries.

Most Shinto rituals are for keeping away evil spirits. Shinto worship can be divided into two aspects; communion between the gods and people, and communion among people. This worshiping consists of three stages; first preparation stage this is where people avoid taboo acts and take apart in a ritual of cleansing themselves. The second stage of worship is where they offer gifts to their gods of food, clothing and incense. The third stage is the celebration and transport of the ‘kami’ meaning gods. The kami is places on a seat and carried by the village people through the village so that the kami can bless the people and the land.

Shrines are where the homes of the kami their gods and can be found almost everywhere in Japan and are always kept very clean and spotless. At the entrance of every temple there is usual a red arched gateway to separate the gods from the everyday world and people. The Shinto priests preform the Shinto rituals and usually live on the shrine grounds. Both men and women are able to become priests and are allowed to marry and have children and when they are preforming rituals the have a helper called ‘miko’ this is like the Christian religion where priests have an alter server. This is very different to the Christian religion where only men are allowed to become priests and are not allowed to marry or have children. But there are also similarities the Christian priests do live near or on the shrine grounds.

The Shinto religion is similar to the Christian religion in a few ways but is also completely different. Shinto’s believe in many gods where Christians only believe in one God and Jesus and there are different rules apply in becoming priests. In general the religions are different and could probably co-exist with each other as the Shinto religion dose with the Buddhist religion in Japan.
