By Greg Miller

The origin of Hinduism dates back to 5000 yrs or more according to the

Historians. The words India and Hindu were derive from Indus. The Indus River is

located in south-central Asia rising in the southwest of Tibet and flowing about 1,00

miles northwest through northern India and southwest through Pakistan to the Arabian

Sea. In ancient times the river was called the Sindhu, but the Persians who migrated to

India called the river Hindu, the land Hindustan and its inhabitants Hindus.

It is generally believed that the Aryans who settled along the banks of the Indus

river about 000 BC brought the basic views of Hinduism to India. They brought along

their own religion, which would later make a distinctive significant addition to what

would be known as Hinduism. The Aryans spread out in several directions from their

place of origin some settled in Iran and others went to western Europe making up the

ancestors of the Greeks, Romans, and the Germans. According to historians the

evolution of Hinduism may be divided into three periods the ancient (6500 BCE-1000

AD), the medieval (1000-1800 AD), and the modern (1800 AD to present).

Hinduism believes that there is only one supreme called Brahman, but Hinduism

is mostly associated with multiplicity of Gods and it does not justify the worship of one

particular god. Hinduism gods and goddesses amount into the thousands representing the

many aspects of Brahman. It is commonly thought to be the oldest religion in the history

of human civilization and does not have any one founder and there is no specific point in

time when it could have been said that it had begun. It can be characterized by a variety

of ideas and practices resulting in a multiplicity of religions.
