The book of Job is mainly the story of Job himself. The authorship is unknown, although many believe it could have been Job, Elihu, Moses, or Solomon. The time setting of Job is said to be anywhere from the time of Abraham to the time the Jews returned from their Babylonian exile. Scholars suggest that the book was written somewhere around the Palestine area. I think the central theme of the book is why do the righteous suffer.

In the beginning of the book it tells how Job is a very wealthy man with the best family. Unlike many others in this time period Job was a very faithful man to the Lord even though he was wealthy. Satan one day confronts the Lord with a proposition, talking about how can Job be so faithful when the Lord has provided him with everything he could ever imagine. So the Lord granted Satan the authority to do anything to Job as he pleases to test his faith to the Lord. So that was it Satan starts by killing his animals. Messenger after messenger came; first Sabeans killed his donkeys and oxen. Then a fire burned up all of his sheep and the herdsmen. Next three bands of Chaldeans drove off his camels and killed his servants. Last while he was still talking to the last messenger his sons and daughters were feasting at the oldest brothers home when a great gust of wind came and caused the roof to collapse killing them all. After all of this Job tore his robe from him and proclaimed himself to the Lord saying, “The Lord gave this all to me and it was his to take away”. This alone is inspiring to me that a person could get everything he owns ripped away from him and still comes out of it as faithful to the Lord before it all happened.

This however was not the end; Satan then afflicted Job with boils that covered his body. Following this even Job’s wife asked why are you still righteous to God when he has done all of these things to you. He still did not curse God. He did curse his birth and day he was conceived and that was it. With all of this happening to Job’s life his three friends came to comfort him. These friends were; Eliphaz the Termanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. As soon as they saw Job they to tore off their robes and sat with him for seven days and seven nights not saying a word. His friends tried to convince him that God does not punish those who do not commit sins and that Job should confess and offer sacrifices for this horrible sin that he supposedly committed. This is something I see as an important lesson to be learned. Friends should not give other friends advice in times of desperate measure, because you could be given them the wrong advice.

When the Lord answers Job he tells him to save himself, and Job repents in dusts and ashes and prayed for his friends and family. After letting Satan perform these tests on Job and seeing that after all of the suffering that Job went through the Lord repaid Job. The Lord doubled his wealth that he had before the tragedy. He restored his herds and doubled them as well. He was blessed with seven more sons and daughters, and no other girls in the land were as lovely and beautiful as the ones that God gave Job.

I would have to say that my favorite book in the Bible now is the book of Job. I feel like sometimes I relate to Job, although I have not suffered as much as Job did. But it taught me a lesson no matter what the Lord does in my life no matter how horrible it is or how much I do not agree with it, that the Lord always has a reason and that I should remain faithful.
