I went to one of the world famous restaurant in Abu Dhabi with two of my brothers and their family members. It was a revolving restaurant at the top of the 8th floor of the Fort Grand International building. That was one of the most memorable experiences in my life because it beautiful experience I shared with my family during a period of my life that I was feeling quite alone.

It was on a fine day in January in 1. At that time I was working as a computer programmer in Abu Dhabi, a state of the United Arab Emirates. That was the only time I had been away from home or my family members. So it was kind of hard and boring. One day I got a surprise call from two of my brothers, who work in Sultanate of Oman ( another country) , and they said they will be coming to Abu Dhabi in a couple of days to visit for one week. I was very happy. We are a very close knit family. It was wonderful to hear that I would see my brothers after a long time. After two days they came along with their family members.

Since I had been away from my family for a long time, this day was somewhat of a family reunion. We spent all day at my home talking and laughing. My brothers had come by with their wives and children. All three boys were between the ages of two and four. They were running around all over the apartment as they discovered a new atmosphere. They were an inquisitive bunch. Their presence made me feel like I was at home and reminded me of myself and my brothers during our childhood. We were the same as my brothers little boys. Running around everywhere and driving our parents crazy. It was wonderful.

The next evening we planned to go out for dinner. Everybody started to suggest different places. Finally I suggested a very famous restaurant. The restaurant Fort Grand International was famous for revolving on the top of the 8th floor of its building. The top portion of the building was designed as a round shaped restaurant which revolves on its axis. I had heard others saying that it revolve at a rate of one rotation per hour. Since it was located on a beach, we decided the view would be spectacular. We would get a good view of both the sea and city from the top of the building. This was also the highest building in Abu Dhabi city. Everyone agreed to my suggestion because they were all excited about seeing this famous restaurant.

Around 50 pm we started from my apartment. Since my car wasn’t large enough to fit all of us, we decided to catch another taxi. The roads were really busy. We kept on talking about our parents and other family matters all the way from my apartment to the restaurant. The honking sound from other vehicles and sounds from the streets were somewhat annoying to us. Almost 0% of the taxi drivers in Abu Dhabi are Pakistani’s. It seemed like the Pakistani taxi driver of our taxi was irritated with us chatting in our local language, because he kept on murmuring something and nodding his head. Maybe it is the feud with the Indians. We paid little attention to him as we were focused on our conversation. After about 0 minutes we reached our destination.

The shape, oval body with a circular top floor made the building appear breathtaking. There were all different types of flowers arranged around huge stones in the front of the entrance. The scent from all the flowers made us feel like we were in an exotic garden. Two ancient horse carts with horsemen guarded the entrance way. It was marvelous; it was something none of us had ever seen before. We entered into the lobby of the building, through the main door. Upon entering we saw a huge hall with gigantic lanterns and other types of ancient antique figurines. One of the security guards inquired about our purpose and pointed us to the right elevator. We went into the elevator and pressed for the 8th floor. The elevator was built of glass, so we had a view of the rest of the floors. All the floors were decorated with antique figurines and exotic flowers. The adults and children were amazed by the surrounding beauty.

When we finally reached the 8th floor, the children didn’t want to get off; they wanted to continue with their “ride”. They thought the elevator ride was some sort of ride on a playground. We finally convinced them to come with us by cajoling them and telling them of more

things yet to come. Thereafter we climbed the marble stairs to the restaurant. The stairs led to a circular balcony with high rails, which encircled the entire restaurant.

The balcony was open to the evening sky and air. The sights from its height were amazing and magical. The sunlight was reflecting from the sea. The calm sea looked really beautiful surrounded by the evening sunlight. The sun looked as if it was ready to sink into the ocean. The wind was blowing like a tornado. The whistling sound of the wind added a special effect. It felt like the wind was calling out to us, as if to tell us to join him in the ocean. .

We all enjoyed the view of the sun setting from there. The yellow and orange colors of the sky were mesmerizing. One of my brothers had with him his camcorder and still camera. He took pictures of us with the sunset to remember the day. At the same time, on the other side of the restaurant, the city was putting more makeup on its face. As the daylight decreased, lights started to shine one by one. Soon the entire city was decorated with lights. On the top of our building, all the other buildings appeared really small. I searched for my apartment; however it was really hard to point out. All the people on the streets looked like ants from up above, as well as all the other vehicles on the street. Some of the children and one of my sisters- in- law seemed a bit afraid of the height.

After enjoying the marvelous sights, we walked towards the restaurant. A receptionist welcomed us and led us into the restaurant itself. From the entrance we could smell the fried meat and fish. We had all been somewhat hungry; however, the smell of the delicious food made us feel famished. The receptionist led us to a big round table. The restaurant walls were decorated with ancient Arabic paintings. The center of the wall was a huge beautiful portrait of Sheikh Saheed Al Nahiyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. It is customary for the businesses in the Middle Eastern States to have portraits of their presidents on the wall. It is a symbol of loyalty to the country.

The restaurant was filled with people chatting in different languages, with the main language being Arabic. The waitresses seemed like they were Russians and Philippinos. A philippino waitress wearing a red and green long dress came to us to take our order. We ordered soup as a start, there after Arabic kabboos, fried camel meat, and fried lobster and shrimp. We decided to stop with this for the time being and order if we need more later.

Our table was covered with a red velvet tablecloth and ornamented with yellow and white roses. The feel of the velvet cloth, along with the pleasant scent of the flowers made our sitting very peaceful. The water smelled and tasted really good. It had some drops of rose water so we felt that we were in some type of exotic garden. The waitress brought our chicken soup at this time. It took about 15 minutes for her to bring our food. In between that time, the waitress served us some vegetable salad on three plates. The salad consisted of green leaves, red and yellow peppers, red onions, red cabbage, chick peas mixed with a creamy sauce. It had a mild spicy flavor. We all decided to try the fried camel meat next. This was an item none of us had ever tasted before. It seemed like they put a paste of masala directly on the meat and fried it. Anyhow the meat seemed really red and spicy. It was hard, fibrous and luscious. They served the kabboos with mutton curry. The lobster and shrimp was succulent. They were both sauted in lots of rich butter, with just the right amount of spices. The slice of king fish was so big that it covered the entire plate. All the fried items were reddish in color. Everybody enjoyed the food really well. We talked and laughed while enjoying the mouth-watering food. After about an hour we decided to leave the restaurant and returned to my apartment.

After spending few more days with me, the day had come for my brothers and their family to return back to Oman. When it was time for them to leave we were all sad. We had a wonderful visit filled with laughter and joy. None of us knew when it would be that we would see each other again. The children had grown much attached to me and they were crying as time came for them to leave. We all hugged and kissed each other. My brothers made me promise that I would visit them upon my next vacation. I escorted them to their taxi and they started on their journey back to Oman. I was glad that they had come to visit. I had been feeling very lonely and homesick. The family presence had made me happier than what I was feeling prior to their visit. It gave me something to cherish until my next visit with them. Those were some of the most memorable days of my life.
