My Unforgettable Little Dog

When I was seven years old, I liked to play with dogs. My interest in dogs continued to rise until I was almost lost into a neighboring Farm settlement with their dogs. This was an event that happened in Kajola farm settlement in Ado Ekiti Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria, West Africa. It had been my usual habit at that time to leave my parents’ house and go out to play with neighbor’s dogs. In the process, I almost got lost inside their cocoa farm one Saturday. My mother was not happy with what happened that day, and she decided to buy little dog for me.

He was a puppy when my mother bought it for me and I started taking care of him. I used to get food from my mother and fed the dog three times a day. Every weekend, I used to take him to the riverside for a body wash in order to keep him clean. I loved the dog so much, and I used to go to my father’s cocoa farm with my father and my brothers to take care of the cocoa plantation together. We usually spent many hours at the farm; there the dog learned chasing after lizards and rats. Sometimes, he used to catch

one lizard or rat per day at the farm. This was an interesting sport that I had watched when the dog was with me. Every member of my family liked the dog. I used to call him by his name, “Riro”. Whenever anyone called his name, he used to feel so happy. At bedtime, Riro used to sleep beside me on the bed. My relationship with him was full of fun and excitement.

One evening, we had just finished our work in the farm and we came back to the hut. The weather was very hot and I asked my elder and younger brothers if we could go to cool ourselves in the stream. We headed to the streamside. We were just preparing to take our shower beside the road under a Cocoa tree. This was a little distance from the stream. Then I heard a noise of a vehicle coming. The vehicle was going to pass through the road beside where we were taking our shower. Meanwhile, Riro was on the other side of the road relieving himself. By the time he finished relieving himself and wanted to cross the road to come to us, the vehicle had come very close to us. I wanted to cross the road to prevent Riro from crossing to us, but I couldn’t go ahead. The vehicle would have hit me if I had made an attempt to cross the road at that time. Then I heard a scream and a shout of anguish from Riro. The vehicle had run over his neck. “What a terrible accident,” I said. I ran to the scene. When I looked upon my dog, blood was gushing out of its mouth, nose and eyes. I cried uncontrollably, “my Dog, my Dog!” I thought he would be still alive. I waited to see if he would stand up and walk again, not knowing that he was just shaking to give up the ghost.

Thereafter, Riro was dead. I continued crying, and I ran to the hut without any pants on to report the incident to my mother. My mother saw me running in devastation and was frightened, thinking that one of my brothers had been injured at the streamside. “What happened to you and where are your brothers?” my mother asked me hastily. I continued to shout, “Riro has died.” I repeated this statement several times uncontrollably and sobbing as I was telling the story to my mother. She asked me how it happened, and I narrated the whole story to her. She felt so sorry for me. She could only comfort me at that time. I was not satisfied. I wanted my dog back alive, but she couldn’t bring him back. I was so devastated, the dog was beyond help, and I continued to cry.

Later that evening, my elder brother took the dead dog, dressed its body and smoked it. Then my elder brother and my younger brother started eating part of the smoked dead dog. “ We would rather eat the dog now than lose it all,” he said. But I could not eat the dog. I was so unhappy. “How can I eat my friend?” I said in reply. They continued to eat but I left them to avoid seeing them eat the dog. It was another attack on me again. I couldn’t help the situation. I was sick for several days. The whole scenario kept returning to my mind and I couldn’t erase it.

Now, twenty years have passed, but my memory is still very sharp in recalling all that happened that day. Though my dog is no longer alive, but I still feel his love in my heart. Perhaps one remembers what one loves.
