Objective -to compare solubilities of salts belonging to the alkaline earth metals

-to compare the oxidizing power of the Halogens

Procedure

Part A Relative Solubilities of Some Salts of the Alkaline Earth Metals

1) Add 5 drops of 0.1 mol/L solution of each of the nitrate salts (magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium) to separate test tubes

) Add 5 drops of 1 mol/L sulfuric acid (precipitating agent) to each test tube and then stir it. Make sure to rinse the rod before mixing each solution.

) Record rather a precipitate has formed, its color, and amount.

4) Repeat steps 1- using the following as precipitating reagents

-1.0 mol/L sodium carbonate (NaCO) solution

-0. mol/L ammonium oxalate [(NH4)CO4] solution

-1.0 mol/L acidified potassium chromate (KCrO4)

Part B Relative Oxidizing Powers of the Halogens

1) Characteristics Colors of Halogens in Solution

• Put 15 drops of aqueous bromine into a small test tube added to 10 drops of hexane and close the test tube with the stopper. Shake the test tube until the bromine color is mostly in the hexane layer.

• Observe the colors of each layer

• Repeat the experiment using aqueous chlorine, and then aqueous iodide in place of aqueous bromine.

) Reactions of Halogens with Halide Ions

1. Label 6 test tubes and add 15 drops of aqueous chlorine and 15 drops of hexane into test tubes # 1 and .

. Add 5 drops of 0. mol/l sodium bromide solution in test tube #1, close it with the stopper and shake it.

. Repeat step using 0.mol/L sodium iodide solution in test tube # , chloride solution in test tube #, sodium iodide in test tube #4, sodium chloride solution in test tube #5, and sodium bromide solution in test tube #6.

4. Record the observations of the color change in each layer for each test tube.

Part C Identification of Unknown Salt

Identify the salt, Mx, in the assigned unknown solution.
