A young man’s life is a journey. As the reader finds out in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “My Kinsman, Major Molineux” Robin is a representative young man. Robin is a young man who, in order to pass from adolescence into maturity, must come to terms with his feelings about his father, about the past and about authority. The pattern of action in this story is that of a journey, a search, and initiation. Authority within a society can change as one matures.

Authority plays a huge part in Robin’s life, as well as in the people’s lives within Boston. Every part of Robin’s journey brings realization on how much influence authority can have on a person to make a difficult decision. As each of the characters is brought about, the characters each have a different perspective, which they allow Robin to explore. “Keep your tongue between your teeth, fool and let me pass!”(p.) Everyone Robin encounters seems to push or rather ignore Robin. All of the activity that is happening around Robin and the people in the town gives you no reason why authority is not on Robin’s side. As the reader learns more about authority of Robin, and his

along his journey. His journey becomes more of a search. It seems that when Robin was maturing, his father in a sense seemed to have a high position in authority, by the

actions, which Robin was applying in the story. The part of Robin’s life starts to become a search as well as a journey. “Am I here, or there?”(p.5)

Robin’s journey is one in which he will find his Kinsman and learn more about himself. Robin like most children looked up to his father and wanted to be like him. Sometimes though you loose sight of what is real and what is wishful thinking. Robin wanted to find his uncle to discover what his father’s past was like, eventually Robin’s attitude would make a person think he was given everything without working for it. “But being a shrewd youth, soon thought himself able to account for the mystery.”(p.6) After Robin is revealing parts of his father on the steps of the church, Robin starts realizing that he is not a boy he once was but a mature young man. “It was his father’s custom to perform domestic worship, that the neighbors might come and join with him like brothers of the family.”(p.4) Robin learns the truth of his father’s passion for the church and how his father helped society realize that they will become something in the future if they want to help themselves. “You will be wiser in time, my friend Robin.” (p.7) The old man teaches Robin about life and, in some ways, gets Robin to express what happened in his past.

Robin expresses himself to a passing stranger why he was embarking upon his journey. People’s pasts give them inspiration to accomplish their part in society. It also allows them to have respect for people in authority. Robin’s relation with his father is one that is the same to the one, which Robin’s father has with his uncle. “ May not a man have several voices…Perhaps a man may; but heaven forbid that a women should. (p.7) Pasts situates one to a point in one’s life, when one has to stop and look back to make a decision which is right for that person at that moment. Everyone’s pasts gives one a standing ground, which allows one to grow and mature into society. As Robin matures the reader learns about is past. It allows the reader to see why Robin is so determined to find his uncle. Robin is a young boy not knowing where life is going to take him. Robin does not know why his father had been so hard on Robin while growing up. “He sent them over forest, hill, and stream, and attempted to imagine how that evening of ambiguity and weariness had been spent by this father’s household.”(p.4) The past allows one to learn and grow from past mistakes.

Robin had seen his Kinsman who had been tarred and feathered. At the cite of the major, Robin was mortified. He lost respect and found reasoning why his father was so willing to let go of life and have no more authority. Everyone makes mistakes, mistakes that Robin makes is that he did not trust himself to rise in the world without the help of his kinsman. “Watch here an hour and Major Molineux will pass by.” (p.) With everything coming together, Robin still does not understand why the name of his Kinsman, was not getting him anywhere. Robin now realizes that he has wasted his time. After he sees his uncle he sees his own foolishness.” I begin to grow weary of a town life, sir. Will you show me the way to the ferry.” (p.40) The man who was helping Robin was trying to help him find himself. He was trying to help Robin find his true self, which will lead him to be successful in whatever he does in the future.

Robin was willing to risk everything to accomplish his search for his uncle. With this journey he found what he was looking for. He learned about himself. All of the people throughout the town taught Robin things along the way. Ultimately Robin has matured into a young man. Adolescants want to succeed in life. Robin will succeed in life by himself. Robin does not know how much he will be able to succeed without his kinsman, but with encouragement, from people around him he will do anything he puts his mind to. The old man told Robin that he should stay and he will learn more. “Strange things we travelers see!” (p.)
