The J. Paul Getty Museum is filled with many different photographs,

portraits, and large sculptures that show just a piece of what the art was

like in Greece. With the mass of overwhelming artifacts many of the

smaller, more hidden pieces are lost among the larger and more predominant

figures.

The most impressive piece is not in plain sight but around a corner on a

side wall. This artifact is a medium sized stone coffin that makes up

for its size in its sheer beauty and magnificence. The stone coffin has

many mysteries as it does not even have a name, and is only referred to

as the front of a sarcophagus. The year is also a mystery, and is

approximated to date back to around 100 B.C., which is when grave

relief’s became popular ( ). This coffin is not similar

to any coffin today, as it is a very intricate and detailed sculpture

that tells a story. The story is of Endymian and his lover, the moon

goddess, Salene, in which Zues allowed Endymian to choose his own death.

Endymian chose eternal sleep, which is now how death is viewed by many.

Although, the story is carved on a grave relief, it celebrates life and

the important things in life. It created a detailed picture connecting

humans, animals, and the gods into one grand scene that would be put into

the ground for nobody to see.

The front of the grave relief depicts the people as happy, living

creatures rather than somber and deceased. The Athenians did morn their

dead, but they found it a greater quality to celebrate peoples’ lives.

They believed very much in an afterlife and that dying wasn’t a horrible

thing. They did not say goodbye forever to the dead, instead they knew

they would meet again in the afterlife. This is shown very well in

another grave of Philoxenos with his Wife, Philoumene, in which they are

shaking hands symbolizing their goodbye, but also symbolizing their

future reunion in the afterlife ( ). In the unnamed grave

Endymian and Salene, as humans, were sculpted with great detail from

their facial expressions to their footwear. This showed their importance

to each other and to life itself, although, they were not the only

important figures in life.

The animals, such as lions and horses, were crafted with this same great

detail as the humans. This showed how highly Athenians viewed the life

that existed outside of the human race. They knew that the animals and

nature were an intricate part of living and of a successful life. The

mane and facial expressions of the horses gave them as much as emotion as

either Endymian or even Salene, who was a goddess. Proving the idea of

equality for all aspects of the world. Humans, nature, and the gods

combined together to create a full circle and a complete life.

The heavens were the final piece of the circle as they were highly viewed

and respected in Athens. Life could not be complete without such

beliefs. They knew the importance of religion and believing in the gods

and goddesses. These predominant figures made success in life possible.

Religion connected humans to one another rather than separating them

apart. In years to come after this period wars would been fought over

religion. This caused religion to help separate and secluded humans from

each other which was the opposing affect it was intended for. Athenians

were connected to each other through religion and nature. Without either

aspect Athenians would not have viewed their lives as fulfilling or

important.

Nature, religion, and people themselves were on equal levels with each

other in Athens. They shared the world with nature, their ideas with

each other, and their beliefs with the gods and goddesses. They gave

everything to better the world rather than to better themselves. They

did not create these masterpieces of art to glorify themselves, but to

rather glorify the period as a whole. This is why a piece of a coffin

exemplifies Athenian life. All the pieces are connected together showing

how nature, humans, and the gods were interweaved together in life. The

artist will probably never be recognized or honored, however, this was

not important to him or her. Instead it was important to create the

grave relief for the sheer art and to pass the deceased onto the

afterlife in beauty.

A thematic comparison between Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Sharer and Dave Mathews Band’s Halloween

Conrad’s novel, The Secret Sharer, takes the reader into the unconscious mind of man through his struggle with self-discovery, and his relationship with a doppelganger in his quest to find the correct balance between the light and dark. Similarly, in the song Halloween, by the Dave Mathews Band, the listener is brought along for the ride as a person labors in confusion between the light and dark sides of his/ her life, struggling to find what feels right.

The young captain, narrator of the story, encounters his soon to be doppelganger, Legatt, one eerie night at the ladder of his ship. Confused as to what to do, he decides to give the man refuge on the boat, and the relationship begins. This captain begins to see himself mirrored in Legatt, as hard as he tries not to, for Legatt is a murderer and the young captain is anxious about the consequences if he exposed himself to this man. At first the captain views the naked Legatt as a character stripped to the essence of human nature and void of all rationality. With a gasp I saw revealed to my stare a pair of feet, the long legs, a broad livid back immersed right up to the neck in a greenish cadaverous glow . . . He was complete but for the head. A headless corpse! On the contrary, although he is mostly described as evil and mysterious at first, the mention of the glow he is emitting hints that some goodness is to be found in what he will introduce to the captain. Seeking guidance and direction, the captain is brought through a passage of self- discovery, looking for the needed balance in his life that will be given to him through his relationship with Legatt. Prior to this encounter, the vulnerable captain finds himself alone on the deck of the ship, with duty of watch guard for the night. “The riding light in the fore-rigging burned with a clear, untroubled, as if symbolic, flame, confident and bright in the mysterious shades of night.” Symbolic of the clean, naïve nature of the captain, this light shines in innocence in the beginning, yet as the captain will soon discover, in times of need a balance is needed, and his acceptance of the lighter side of human nature as the only truth and goodness, would soon be put into jeopardy. In a concrete parallel, the opening of the Halloween appears as if a confused person is slowly building up to the struggle he is about to face. The song soon builds in tempo and intensity as the subject is opened up to a darker side of life, a needed but troublesome exposure. At the beginning of the song, and at the beginning of the captain’s relationship with Legatt, the reader/ listener is opened up to the feelings of confusion and angst both the captain and the subject of the song are experiencing, as they each are drawn into the darker side of human nature.

As the relationship between Legatt and the captain grows, the captain is discovering a new- found confidence and adequacy that he never knew he possessed. Legatt, representing the repressed, idiosyncratic side of the captain, subconsciously aids in the captain’s diversion from the socially acceptable, and into the realm of the confident individual required of an efficient captain. Yet throughout this process, the captain still attempts to resist this change and holds onto elements in his life that symbolize the lighter, more structured side of nature. The white hat that the captain insists on wearing throughout the story symbolizes his struggle in parting with the goodness that once typified his nature. Throughout the song Halloween, the subject also experiences distinct periods of light throughout his journey into darkness, as the song’s intensity and fortitude of tone are broken up by slight riffs of softer, more jovial sounding rhythms. These slight breaks in the journey emphasize the subject’s trouble in fully accepting the darker side of life. However, in both works, by the end of the journey, the subject parts with their prior attachments to goodness, and accepts that he must be opened up to the darkness of mankind in order to grow and develop properly and entirely. The captain finally parts with the hat, showing that sometimes it is necessary to get in touch with the darker aspects of mankind. Likewise, at the close of Halloween the subject soon breaks all ties to goodness as the tone permanently shifts to the purely intense and passionate melody. The powerful rhythm of this melody then almost blends with a positive, confident quality, showing the subject’s acceptance of the darkness he/ she had experienced.

The works of both Conrad and Dave Mathews exemplify man’s journey of self- discovery and his struggle to accept darkness and the unknown. The young captain in The Secret Sharer is introduced to a man who represents the repressed nature of the captain. Through their relationship, the captain is exposed to a side of himself he never knew existed, and in the end is better off for it. In Halloween, the listener is exposed to the emotions of a man as he is torn between light and dark temperament, and his struggle to accept the mysterious shadows of life. The works of both Conrad and Mathews successfully typify the emotional journey experienced by an individual when he confronts the unfamiliar in himself, and is beneficially changed as a result of his self- discovery.

It’s hard to believe that after four years of high school, one three-hour session in a classroom could have more meaning than the other 1460 days that are spent in a high school classroom. Yet that’s what I found in the process of reaching college. The Standardized Aptitude Test, more commonly known as the SAT’s plays a major role in the acceptance or rejection from college. It is absurd that this three hour test is the deciding factor for the future of students. It is much more important that colleges look at your high school grades. Looking at these grades will show the admissions how much effort the student puts into schoolwork.

Last year, as a high school senior, I applied to twelve schools. I applied to so many due to the fact that standards of schools vary from year to year. My number one choice was the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. I had always wanted to go there since my older cousins went there and raved about what a remarkable school it was. I did not have a tutor or attend any prep classes for the SAT’s since my parents did not feel the courses were necessary. I looked over a few practice exams so that the test would be familiar to me. I came out with an 1150, a score which I was certainly proud of, being that I had no preparation. Now I knew that Michigan would definitely be a reach for me to get into. I had a .5() GPA in high school, and a strong list of outside activities that I participated in. My SAT score was the only thing that would bring me down. I sent my applications out early since admission at U of M is rolling. Within a few weeks I received a letter saying that I was deferred, meaning that I was still in consideration, and my application would be reviewed at a later date. A few months later I received the rejection letter.

I knew Michigan would be a reach for me, but I figured that since my GPA was high, that maybe my SATs wouldn’t weigh as much on their decision. I was devastated, and became very angered at the fact that I did not make the school of my dreams because of this one -hour test. From this I concluded that the SAT’s are a poor representation of intelligence.

There are many reasons why the SAT is a biased test. Some people may be able to afford tutors and prep classes for the test, which puts them at an unfair advantage. I know that many of my friends met with tutors since junior year. The tutor came to their houses once a week at a cost anywhere from 60 to 150 dollars per hour. The students that possessed this luxury did very well on the SAT. One of my friends went up 400 points from the PSAT. So in this aspect the test favors wealthy people.

SAT scores are gapped between different groups of people. According to Jack Marks of the Daily Report Card newspaper, “Students in the three categories of Hispanic or Latino backgrounds also lagged behind the average on both the math and verbal sections….. Another gap exists between urban and suburban scores. Average SAT scores in the suburbs are above the national average and rising, while scores in urban and rural areas are falling further below the average, according to the College Board.” “The gap between Whites and Latinos was sixty points a decade ago, and has increased to sixty-seven points in the year 000. There is an even larger gap between Whites and African-Americans.” “In 10, there was a ninety-one-point gap, which also increased to a ninety-four-point gap in 000. In addition to those racial gaps, there is a large gender gap as well….Though women generally receive higher grades in school, men repeatedly do better on both sections of the SAT’s (Weiner, 5).”

The test does not assess information that the students have learned in school. It also only tests two subject areas out of the many that students may be strong in. The standardized test is justified for the fact that it levels out the playing field for all high school students. It is true that students GPA’s can be affected by different things, such as easy or hard teachers, or how teachers evaluate their students. Therefore a test is needed that can equalize all students. I propose to do away with the SAT I, and make students take the SAT II’s which are subject based tests that are optional. This is a much better way to asses the students. It will enable admissions counselors to see how much effort they put into studying, and preparing for the test, and how knowledgeable the student is in the subject. This would certainly be a more effective way of evaluating the students, because it is on material that has recently been covered in school, which is the same way that college exams work. The SAT I tests some subject matter, which is never covered in school. For example, the analogy section of the verbal part. It doesn’t matter how many vocabulary words you memorize, because there are over a billion words in the English dictionary, any of which can be on the test. As for the math section, most of the concepts in it were last covered in 8th or th grade. By giving the SAT II students will be able to

I now attend The Pennsylvania State University, number 45 for academics in the country according to US News and World Report. It is a great school, and I am very happy here. I still wish I would have been accepted to the University of Michigan, which is number 5 for academics in the country according to US News and World Report, but my credentials didn’t meet their standards. After contacting your admissions counselors I became aware of the fact that I was not accepted because of my SAT score. This news upset me because maybe if I had a tutor or taken a class I would have been accepted. I hope that you will take my suggestion into consideration. You will be missing out on some very intelligent students that would benefit your institution

The poems “The Chimney Sweeper”, “When I was One-and-Twenty”, and “This Be the Verse”, all touch upon powerful themes. “The Chimney Sweeper” presents hope can be a very wonderful thing, possibly the most important thing of all. “When I was One-and-Twenty” touches upon the theme of heart. Also, “This Be the Verse” demonstrates what can go wrong in parenthood. These are three very potent topics, and relate to everyday life in many ways.

In “The Chimney Sweeper”, by William Blake, his father sells a boy for money. How wrong is this? This represents the things people will do for money. However the true topic William Blake I believe is hinting at is hope. An angel told him “if he’d be a good boy he’d have God for a father, and never want joy. This angel symbolizes hope, and that it gives hope to all kids going through the same situations. This hope will get the kids through the tough, tough times. When hope is within, it can be impossible to be taken away.

In “When I was One-and-Twenty”, by A.E. Housman, Heart is mentioned. The topic of discussion is to not give away your heart and soul. Material items don’t mean anything. “Crowns, pounds and guineas, pearls and rubies” al represent the material items mentioned in this poem. Do not ever sell your soul, or nothing will be left.

“This Be the Verse”, by Phillip Larkin, is clearly the most powerful and blatant piece of the three poems mentioned. The theme is so easily seen and obvious. The man uses the F word repeatedly enough to express his anger. It is clear to me that this man had a very hard parenthood. His parents most likely turned him into something that is not the norm in society. However, this man also thinks that everyone gets this horrible parenthood growing up, and that no one should ever have kids. To me, this was one bad experience, but that does not justify the statement “Get out as early as you can, and don’t have any kids yourself”. If you have been raised properly, this does not pertain to you. This man probably needs counseling.

All three of these poems discuss moving themes. Two are positively moving themes, and one is very negative. I hate negatively moving poems, what is the use to have negative impact on the reader? This is just my opinion. All poems should shed positive light.

Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson is a book about choice, loss, transience and blurred boundaries. Through literary criticisms, we see three different opinions on the novel, which helps the reader to think more deeply about the novel. When reading these criticisms, it is easy to relate to one article more than the others. After reading three articles by Ravits, Kaivola and Smyth, I agree with Kaivola’s point on the novel, Housekeeping.

In Extending the American Range Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping, Martha Ravits discusses that Ruth fits within a larger, already accepted grand scheme of literature. The already accepted literature consists of males being the protagonists, having a problem and solving it, therefore becoming the hero. Ravits compares Ruth’s family history to characters such as Huck Finn, Isaac McCaslin and Ishmael. These characters undertook the struggle for maturity by choosing surrogate fathers (Ravits 648) while Ruth is a girl who must ultimately choose a mother figure in place of the one she once lost. Ravits summarizes Housekeeping in terms of wilderness and her relationship with Sylvie. Ruth adopts her aunt Sylvia as mentor and substitute mother in much the same way that the developing male in American fiction has taken an outcast as father-figure to facilitate his struggle for maturity (Ravits 65). Ravits’ main point is that an author can take any aspect of typical male heroism in a novel and apply it to women. The wilderness is a theme in this novel. One may not think that wilderness would have a major role in a predominately female novel, but Robinson changes that. This book is centered around the lake, and the characters spend multiple times in the woods. The article talks about the typical male hero and that Ruth can be identified as this hero. Ravits compares Housekeeping to already accepted, good literature. She discusses that by putting a female in the role, it changes tradition. Robinson goes beyond ordinary literature and writes a novel about women and the decisions they must make. Ravits also considers the title of the novel, and what it means in our culture. She says that a house is a major icon of female cultural existence (66) and that it is destroyed in this novel. This is because Sylvie does not keep house like a culturally acceptable female would. The house is messy and she does not act as a typical mother would in our society. Basically, to Ravits, Housekeeping demonstrates the urge to move beyond conventional social patterns (666).

Karen Kaivola has a different take on Housekeeping. She looks at this novel in terms of women and their role in society, but differently than Ravits does. She thinks that the novel is written for the reader to sympathize with Ruth and Sylvie. She also discusses the view that feminists may have on the novel. She says that some may like it, but to many it is very unclear. Housekeeping does not necessarily show a strong side of women that feminists would identify with. However, Kaivola thinks that one person may read and interpret this novel unlike the next. It can be looked at from many points of view, depending on who the reader may sympathize with, or the beliefs that one may have. We need to make distinctions to construct meaning (Kaivola 675). She is saying that we need to identify with one character, or have a certain perspective in our heads as we read in order to read a book and interpret it with meaning. Kaivola says that Housekeeping challenges this statement because Ruth and Sylvie are the opposite of culturally acceptable females and it challenges the reader to think from their point of view. In this thought, she discusses Ruth’s choice to follow Sylvie, unlike her sister and how readers are supposed to react to that. Kaivola knows that the reader must decide on their own whether or not it was a good decision because of the way the choice is represented in the novel.

Like Ravits, Kaivola thinks that Housekeeping challenges conventional female roles by representing the repetitive nature of keeping house as an ultimately futile attempt to create order out of an ever-threatening chaos (Kaivola 677). Sylvie has a less constrained life and can be more identified with Ruth’s grandfather. However, Kaivola discusses that Ruth does separate herself from Sylvie at one point of the novel. When Sylvie leaves her, Ruth is able to feel anger, and realizes that they are not identical beings. However, this takes Ruth into the idea of blurred boundaries, how she is never clear if she is dreaming, or remembering correctly. Ruth never completely becomes her own person. She has a desire to live her life to the fullest, but she never can achieve this. A life with blurred boundaries is characterized by uncertainty, loss, and pain (Kaivola 688).

Jacqui Smyth interprets Housekeeping as a novel which ultimately comes back to the idea of home and house and the understanding of it. She says that home is the norm and it defines everything else in life. This is the opposition to what we expect so it is seen as a negative in our society. She talks about the transience of Sylvie and how Ruth becomes a product of her transience. She talks about the home and how Edmund built is to be, and what it has become from Sylvie living in it. Since it was unfinished to begin with, it was like Sylvie was supposed to end up living in it. The house is transient itself (Smyth 85). There is no order, it has never been finished being built in places, and external forces have altered the house. The town’s inability to tolerate transience ironically forces Ruth and Sylvie into becoming transients (Smyth 8). After leaving Fingerbone, they have nowhere that they belong because they have no home.

In looking at these three articles, I agree the most with Kaivola’s argument. First, I think that when reading this novel, the reader feels sympathetic to Ruth and Lucille. They have had a life of loss and when having to choose whether to stay with Sylvie or not, they must make a difficult decision. It is hard for the reader to choose whether or not they think Ruth’s decision is a smart one, because the reader’s feelings get involved. I agree that the reader must make distinctions to construct meaning, and it is hard to do this in Housekeeping because of the blurred boundaries. Moreover, it is questionable whether Ruth even makes the choice- or does she go with Sylvie because she is the stronger personality and Ruth needs somebody who will tell her what to do and make decisions for her for the rest of her life. Ruth is not an individual and it is too hard for her to become one. Even when she is grown up, she is still dreaming about her life and what she would like it to be, even though it will never happen. After she leaves Fingerbone, she tries to develop herself, but ends up waiting tables and imagining the life of Lucille. I agree with Kaivola in the sense that a feminist may not enjoy this book. I do not think that Ruth is looked at as a hero in this novel. She can’t make decisions, and runs away with Sylvie instead of standing up to what she believes in- because she doesn’t really believe in anything.

I agree that Housekeeping challenges the role of conventional females. However, unlike Ravits, I do not think that Ruth and Sylvie play the role of the hero. Some may think that leaving and starting their own lives may be considered heroic, but in my eyes, they do not do anything to earn the name of a hero. They do not accomplish anything in their lives, and Ruth will die dreaming. However, while they are not heroes to me, I understand what Kaivola says about women who are socially constrained to housekeeping and accomplish nothing in their lives. Sylvie does not care about materials such as the house and would rather do her own thing. However, this is not socially accepted and that is why this novel challenges female conventions.

Housekeeping really demonstrates feelings of loss and pain, but shows readers life away from the norm. I think the book gets the reader thinking about family, and is great for enjoyment.

It is not the way you look that is important, but the way you feel about yourself. Every day billboards, television ads, magazines, and the everyday Joe Shmoe, are brainwashing today’s society to believe that they have to look as perfect and pristine as a supermodel. To tell you the truth, with out all of they layers of caked on makeup, the perfectly hardened in place hair, and the expensively tight clothing, supermodels aren’t as perfect and pristine as they want us to believe.

In the summer of 000, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a fashion model. I did all the research on local agencies and came across one that was willing to meet me.

The “interview” was only a couple of days after I called. I showed up looking like I just stepped off the runway, and they decided to take me the minute I stepped foot in the door. My first gig with them was at a big modeling convention where you go and strut your stuff in front of all the top agencies from across the nation. Let me tell you, the feeling you get when you are walking down the runway with all the lights and eyes on you and walking perfectly in step with the heart thumping music, is a feeling I will never forget. I felt as if I was on top of the world!

After the convention, my agency told me that I was too short to walk the runway at a fashion show and that I had to lose weight. Unfortunately, I weighted 105lbs and was 5’5”, and was already underweight for my height and age. Nevertheless, I listened to my agency, and stopped eating completely, and only drinking water.

I denied that I was anorexic until my best friend had me stand in from of a mirror, only wearing my bikini, and take a close look at my self and see that I was literally skin and bones. I looked like I was extremely sick and like I was on the verge of death.

The last gig I ever did was a hair show for Wella, the number two beauty company in the world, the number one being L’Oreal. That was a lot of fun. I had at least four people messing with my hair, makeup, and clothes, all at one time. Unfortunately, the things they did to my hair ruined it. In a span of two days my hair was stripped of it’s color, dyed, bleached, dyed again, permed, crimped, and a whole lot more that I’m not going to ramble on and on about.

When that gig was over, my agency told me I still had to lose more weight when I weighted at most 100 lbs, and that I had to cut my hair. That is where I drew the line. If I lost any more weight I would have gone in to the hospital and be fed through my nose. I did not want that and no one, not family, not friends, not even I was going to cut my long hair. No way, no how! To top it off I was not going to change my looks or myself for anyone, not even my parents or my boyfriend. I realized that it is not worth it.

No matter what someone says, you should not have to change anything about yourself in order to live up to the media and society’s perception of beauty. It is not worth it to risk your health and lose your self-respect just to fit in. Nothing can ever change the fact that you are who you are, and you will be that way forever.

During the summer before my senior year on high school, I was watching one of my all time favorite movies, “Jerry Maguire”. This had come after a hard and tedious six hour football practice and I was most defiantly not in the right state of mind. About to fall asleep on the couch I hear the part when Rod Tidwell screams, “ SHOW ME THE MONEY, SHOW ME THE MONEY JERRY!”. At that point I had an epiphany of how all of this can outline the people involved with the start to my future. This outrageous and hilarious movie line is what sparked it all for me.

After the line was screamed and awoke me from my daze I once again began to fall asleep, not fully asleep but still conscious to think about that phrase. I started to question myself to see where O was to fit in with this whole mess and after some pondering I am the successful high school student that did very well. Now that I am going to be moved up into the big leagues of college I won’t be the huge star and will need someone or thing to help me get through it all. This is the same example of Rod Tidwell the one chanting this inspirational phrase, he was the college football star breaking all kinds of records but when he got to the pro’s he was nothing again and needed to be led. That’s about only a third of what needs to be figured but that’s a start

Now the leader part makes a little more sense because not everyone is able to get through a new style or way of life without a little help from someone. Rod’s help was from his sports agent, a very successful one at that. This was the guy that was going to make sure he got through it all and brought back some of that star status he had in the lower level. My leader to help me get through to the next level is going to be you. Yes I want you to lead me through this new level. I have seen the success you have had in the past with some of your other clients both which are my aunt and uncle who’s reputation and career are all thanks to your leadership. I believe it is all about the reputation of how you have down in the past. There is always a crap shoot if you want to take a chance with another leader but I want the sure thing and that’s why I have chosen you.

Ok we are about two-thirds done solving this puzzling saying. All that is left to describe is the money. I mean it really can’t be money it has to stand for something else. That something else is what I think you are the only one able to show me. I am referring none other than to the knowledge, education, and power to succeed in this business world of today. Rod wanted the money for his talents and that is what Jerry did. He made the real Rod Tidwell come out to be able to get him the money. That’s what I expect and know you can do for me, SHOW ME THE KNOWLEDGE!

Even though this movie has produced a great line of inspiration from just one movie line it overall has some meaning to me. I just love the whole idea of being a sports agent with all the awesome perks. I mean there is a lot of other work not shown and that I have seen but getting to be around sports for your job, talking with big time athletes, and possibly being known in the sports business like David Faulk. That is just my dream career. I love sports and to be able to go into a field where the job is sports would be the greatest thing possible.

What I’m trying to conclude is that if everything follows the outline of that movie line my dream career could very easily become a reality like Rod Tidwell’s did because he had a leader that was experienced and had success before. That is why i choose you.
