“He”

Sometimes people are to busy trying to make the world think everything is okay only one day to find themselves hurting the people closest to them. Katherine Anne Porter dramatizes this theme by her use of character, irony, plot and symbol.

The story “He” is about a family, The Whipples, and the challenges they face with a son who was born with something wrong with him. He is referred to throughout the story as “He”. They also have two other children, Emly and Adna. The family lives on a farm has a very hard time managing to make ends meet.

Mrs. Whipple is the protagonist in the story. She is a very round character and has many sides to her. She is a very proud woman who will do almost anything not to allow anybody outside the immediate family to see how poor and unhappy her life really is. She does not want them to know how hard she has it raising a son that is mentally challenged. She is also a developing character. Although the change does not take place until it is too late for her to do anything different, she does come to a realization at the end of the story.

Mrs. Whipple is in conflict with herself, with society, with man, and with nature. She is in conflict with nature because nature has dealt her a bad hand in life. She has this son that is so much hard work for her. She must constantly be looking after him because he gets into all kinds of trouble. Not because he is a bad kid, but because he has absolutely no fear of anything. Her husband is very unsupportive. Her conflict with society is caused by her pride. She is constantly worried about what “they” are going to say or think. “…but He’s my child, and I’m not going to have people say anything. I get sick of people coming around saying things all the time”(717). She would even go as far as to make such remarks to keep up the façade as, “He aint to be slighted, no matter who else goes without”(718). Yet her actions speak louder than her words. When there is no one around who might judge her, she makes Him sleep without a blanket to make sure the other children don’t go cold. It is not necessarily because she wants to be mean or cruel, she feels that the cold does not bother him and justifies her actions by telling herself that they really don’t have enough blankets to keep everybody warm. At the end of the story she finds herself in conflict with herself. She is faced with the guilt of realizing that “He” did know what was going on all the time, he just wasn’t able to communicate it to her.

It is ironic that Mrs. Whipple was so worried all the time about what “they” would be saying. Whenever she was in the presence of other people she treated her son according to those fears, all the while not concerned for a minute about what “He” was really feeling”, only unable to say. It is also ironic that at the beginning of the story she claims to love him more than the other children, yet she actually treats him worse when nobody is looking. And finally, when her brother comes to visit, she actually made her family go broke, cooking the pig they would’ve made more money off of later in the year, just to “show” her brother that they were doing okay.

The story is told in limited omniscient point of view. We have access only to the thoughts and feelings of Mrs. Whipple.

The climax of the story is when Mrs. Whipple is taking her son to the County Home for treatment. He starts to cry and it was at this moment that she realized he may have been aware of everything that had been going on. Maybe He did remember. “Maybe he remembered all the times she boxed His ears, maybe he had been scared that day with the bull, maybe he had slept cold and couldn’t tell her about it”(7).

Not one time in the story does the mother call her retarded son by a name. He is always referred to in the story as “he”. This reference is symbolic for the way she feels about her son, as if he was just an animal. The way she treats him also shows that she feels he is like an animal. For example when the family sits down to eat he waits for his food and sits in the corner like a dog.

Mrs. Whipple gives the illusion that her life is normal. Yet she is a very unhappy woman. She is poor and has a retarded son to constantly be looking after. This story just goes to show the some people will do anything to keep up appearances even if it means hurting the very people they love.

Ralph Ellison’s “Battle Royal,” is a short story of a talented young black male’s struggle to find his identity through the lies and racism of the whites, and his own people, who believe his actions, are those of a sell out, of African-Americans. This is true in a way because the narrator does take advantage of the white sponsored education, but in another sense, he is also taking advantage of the education to elevate himself in the white society and ultimately suppress white authority more effectively. Although the narrator was deceived into giving a speech at a gathering of the town’s leading white citizens, mislead into fighting in “battle royal,” a boxing match, and tricked into gratitude of the white’s gift of a scholarship to a “college for Negroes,” in the end he will discover his own identity and that neither the whites nor the blacks hold the key.

When the narrator showed up hotel to give his speech, he was told that he might as well take part in battle royal, which came before his speech. He was lead on the front of the ballroom, and in front of his stood a naked, blonde, white woman with an American flag painted on her stomach. The narrator was attracted to her, “had the price of looking at her been blindness, I would have looked,” but at the same he despised her. She was there to tease the men, both blacks and whites. The blonde represented something that the narrator couldn’t have, in more ways than one. He couldn’t have her sexually, because at the time, a black man couldn’t be with a white woman. Another reason that she represented something he couldn’t have was because the American flag on her stomach represents freedom. The narrator didn’t have true freedom yet. But in a sense the narrator can relate to this woman. At the time, both the blacks and women were treated as property and not humans.

After the blonde left the room, the boys were all ordered to get into the ring. “All ten of us climbed under the ropes and allowed ourselves to be blindfolded with broad bands of white cloth.” The boys literal blindfolding in the ring parallels the men’s metaphorical blindness as they watch the fight. The men view the boys not as individuals, but as inferior beings, as animals. The blindfolds also represent the boys’ own metaphorical blindness-their inability to see through the false masks of goodwill that barely conceal the men’s racist motives as they force the boys to conform to the racial stereotype of the black man as a violent, savage beast. The narrator, blind in so many ways, has not yet learned to see behind the masks, behind the surfaces of things, behind the veils put up by white society.

One by one the boys began to leave the ring leaving only the narrator and Tatlock, the biggest of the gang. The blind folds were removed and the narrator was forced to fight Tatlock. The narrator clinched with Tatlock and told him to fake a knock out and Tatlock would be able to keep the prize. Tatlock didn’t agree, at that point he didn’t care about the prize, he was after the narrator. “I’ll break your behind,” he whispered, “For them?” “For me, sonofabitch.” He was after the narrator because he was light skinned, in that time, known as ginger-colored, aiding in the fact that his own people, African-Americans, think he’s a sell out. The narrator believes that he is superior to the other boys there. He views himself as a guest of the white people; while the other boys are there because of the money that they may win from fighting in battle royal. As the narrator started to fight back, he had a chance to knock out Tatlock and win the fight. However, when he was about to move in for the win, he heard a voice in the audience yell out, “I got my money on the big boy.” The narrator almost dropped his guard, he started to get confused, wondering whether he should go against the voice, isn’t it going against his speech? And in his doubt the narrator was knocked unconscious, and lost the fight. As the narrator lied on the floor, he blood soaked onto the floor. “And I lay there, hazily watching a dark red spot of my own blood shaping itself into a butterfly, glistening and soaking into the soiled gray world of the canvas.” Just as a butterfly dies shortly coming into the world from its cocoon, a part of the narrator dies because the voice of the white man caused him confusion and he started to doubt himself. He wasn’t able to show who his truly is, and what he is capable of.

The narrator still has not learned to see behind the veil of the white society, and lunged on the rug for a gold coin. Only too late does he discover the falsity of the supposedly gold coins and of white generosity, the painful electric current ran through the rug, it was electrified. He tried to avoid touching the rug, but the men began to push him onto it. “It seemed a whole century would pass before I would roll free, a century in which I was seared through the deepest levels of my body to the fearful breath within me and the breath seared and heated to the point of explosion.” Just as he is rolling through the rug, his ancestors had endured such pain, and much greater, when they were slaves.

Finally, after enduring the pain of the naked blonde, Tatlock, and the rug, the narrator is allowed to make his speech. “Whenever I uttered a word of three or more syllables a group of voices would yell for me to repeat it. I used the phrase “social responsibility” and they yelled “What’s that you say, boy?” After having to repeat the word so many times, and trying to swallow the blood in his mouth, the narrator accidentally and unconsciously said, “social equality.” The crowd began to get unpleasant, and shouted hostile phrases at him. They started to put him back in his place. “We mean to do right by you, but you’ve got to know your place at all times.” The moment he exhibits an individual opinion, the men demand that he reassume the good slave role. By rewarding him with the briefcase and scholarship only when he does so, the men restrict his social advancement to their terms.

As the narrator matures, he will develop new conceptions of race relations and come to a new understanding of how to assert his own identity within and against these relations. Each one of our journeys through life is different. Accordingly, there are no hard and fast rules to guide those of us who seek a better understanding of ourselves and life in general. Much of what we are is beyond our power, such as our genetic inheritance. However, we all have the same drives such as those for power, food, and social contact. These drives all vie for satisfaction and their varying strengths and weaknesses determine our core characteristics. Advances in technologies in the past centuries have increased each persons ability and likelihood of interacting with people of cultural backgrounds quite different from his own. However, it is still ones own duty to cope with the growing world, and to discover one’s identity.

Commercialism in "The Most Dangerous Game

Commercialism in “The Most Dangerous Game”

In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” the reader is introduced to commercialism at its best. Through the use of his three dimensional characters and the suspenseful plot, Connell takes his readers on an exhilarating ride through the twisted actions of one man’s search for the ultimate sporting game. Power and the need to win can become an obsession that can lead to destruction.

Connell uses commercialism to obtain a hungry reading audience. Commercial fiction is “Fiction to meet the taste of a wide popular audience and relying usually on tested formulas for satisfying such taste”(1706). Connell wrote “The Most Dangerous Game” aware of an audience that was eager for entertainment that included characters from the intellectual realm and characters from wartime factions.

Because the United States was involved in a war overseas, the American public was in need of entertainment in which evil was defeated and good virtues are rewarded.

Meador

Connell’s characters are entertaining and any reading audience can appreciate the vivid images Connell uses to describe General Zaroff

Rainford’s first impression was that the man was

Singularly handsome; his second was that there

was an original, almost bizarre quality about the

general’s face. He was a tall man past middle

age, for his hair was a vivid white; but his

thick eyebrows and pointed military mustache were

as black as the night from which Rainsford had

come. (6)

What reading audience could not become fascinated by such a stately character?

Just as Connell uses fascinating characters to win his reading audience, he uses a suspenseful plot to gain his audiences’ interest. When the narrator discoveries what prey General Zaroff is hunting (man), he decides that instead of becoming a partner in Zaroff’s madness, he will become the hunted. Zaroff’s belief that ”Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if need be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong” is one that Rainsford finds twisted and immoral (67). Rainsford even states,

Meador

“Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (66). The suspenseful events of the manhunt, gave Connell’s audience exactly what it was thirsty for good to triumph over evil.

The commercial fiction found within “The Most Dangerous Game” is obvious. From the characters, to the suspenseful plot, the audience is not disappointed. It was through the actions of both Rainsford and Zaroff that the audience was shown the destruction of a man due to his obsession for power and his twisted desire for total control.

Introduction

The postal service, radio, telephone, television and, more recently, the electronic media have radically altered the way that organizations conduct business nowadays.

Each technology has provided different means of reaching final customers that have varied from mail order catalogues, inbound and outbound telemarketing, direct response advertising involving coupons and “phone now” appeals and, more recently, electronic media that include the internet, e-mail and interactive cable television.

At the Office Image Systems Ltd

Technology has changed the face of the office. Not only are office workers more productive, but office equipment is being consolidated; it is more environment-friendly and more efficient.

One of the leading office equipment suppliers, Image Systems Ltd of Strait Street, Valletta, this year celebrates 5 years in business. Technology has changed the market, Image Systems general manager Alex Gollcher told The Sunday Times. Over the past five years we have moved from an analogue machine to a digital machine. The digital machine today is fully networkable, more reliable with fewer mechanical parts. With the digital technology has come an improvement in laser technology so, Mr Gollcher pointed out, less toner is being used, and a better toner that is more environment-friendly.

The latest office equipment can be integrated into the IT structure no matter the platform - Microsoft, IBM or any other - and users can communicate with these machines, controlling them from anywhere within the office.

The latest machines from Xerox, marketed in Malta by Image Systems, are multi-function productivity centres that integrate scanning, faxing, printing and photocopying in a single unit.

Email Marketing -

E-mail is one of the most pervasive media available today. It reaches us at work and at home, and since we are accustomed to dealing with e-mails as soon as they come in, they also elicit immediate response. To top all this, e-mail is very cost-effective. Therefore its not a surprise that e-mail marketing is one of the most used tools on the Net.

Internet Websites Accessibility MaltaNET

Maltanets customer care call centre boasts handling more than 1,500 calls and ensures a reply to 600 plus e-mails a week. Maltanet is committed to provide a superior quality customer service, both online on http//www.maltanet.net or by phone on 1 48600.

Video-conferencing

Working effectively with your business associates, whether in the next building or halfway across the globe, is critical in todays business environment. But logically, it isnt always feasible to be in the same place at the same time with co-workers, especially if much of the information you need is stored on your PC. Video conferencing provides a solution since it focuses on person-to-person interaction. Anyone equipped with a desktop video conferencing system can participate in any office discussion, anywhere, via user-friendly video windows.

Video conferencing can benefit, your company, your employees and the whole community. Video conferencing helps companies compete in the global market since employees can work from home during the business hours of others, in a variety of time zones.

Although telephones and faxes have been with us for a number of years, the benefits of video conferencing are better as it allows you to meet face to face, as if both parties were in the same room. A questionable document or figure may be easily viewed by both parties as if it was their own PC. Agreements are reached without having to send and resend documentation through your fax.

Telephone Systems

And with the advent of wireless technology, people are now surfing the web on their cell phones, using mobile commerce or m-commerce and receiving e-mails between phone calls. In short, e-marketing’s technological horizons are limitless.

The advent of the telephone was instrumental in fostering telemarketing. In this marketing communications system trained specialists use telecommunications technologies to conduct marketing and sales activities. Outbound telemarketing is a cross between direct mail and face-to-face selling via a sales force. Its main attraction is its versatility, lower cost per contact especially via technological integration that needs to be weighted against its intrusive nature.

Telemarketing has also been used very effectively for the inbound situation. In the UK, Direct Line for car insurance and First Direct in banking are two very successful examples where verbal interaction is valued by customers and the internet may not offer as obvious an upgrade as one may at first think.

ISDN is a proven and reliable service.

It gives fast access to information instantaneous call set-up and guaranteed high data speeds mean less time waiting.

It’s simple having telephones, faxes and computers connected on the one ISDN services makes it an obvious upgrade choice for analogue phone users.

It’s flexible ISDNs wide range of communication options gives customers the opportunity to add new locations to their businesses and grows with them as they expand.

It can increase productivity and profitability ISDN supports new ways of sharing information and working together - such as video conferencing and e-mail which allow people in different locations to work more collaboratively and efficiently.

It assists your customer service An ISDN service gives businesses more options for client contact through telephone, fax, the Internet or PC to PC.

Overseas phone calls through Maltacom will soon cost a fraction of the existing tariffs, thanks to the introduction of Voice Over Internet Protocol.

Costs to most European countries will vary between three and four cents, and just five cents a minute to Canada, a stark difference to the high rates currently charged over fixed lines.

The system is being introduced for commercial companies this week and will be phased in for residents by the end of the year.

The service, which will be called TalkTime, will be made available via Maltacoms internet subsidiary Terranet.

Following the liberalisation of the market last January, a number of other companies had started offering the simple to use VoIP.

Terranet manager Keith Fearne explained that all one needs to do is to buy a pre-paid calling card which would be on sale from leading outlets. People will need to call a local number, enter the PIN found on the back of the calling card and dial the overseas destination number when prompted.

The only extra charge would the cost of the local call, which would be charged at standard Maltacom rates.

Use of Mobile Phones in Malta

Mobile phone subscriptions have also overtaken the number of fixed telephone lines, which stand at 5. for each 100 population in Malta, reflecting trends overseas.

• Know your market. Instead of running costly market studies, database marketing can help determine wide trends throughout your market. Database marketing is also one of the most efficient means of discovering those untapped areas of interest that can provide future revenue.

• Know your results. Database marketing is one of the easiest ways of both reaching and tracking the progress of your ROI goals. Plus, by efficiently targeting your campaigns, database marketing requires less time and energy on your part. Results are easy to gage by Click Squad’s analysis.

The developments in computer technology has also made it possible to collect, store and retrieve data with relative ease when compared to the days when databases were card-based and immensely laborious and tedious to search and update. Not only have search facilities improved but also sophisticated analytical statistical techniques have made it increasingly possible to meet customer needs more specifically. Indeed, at the heart of much of direct marketing is the marketing database.

Evolving technology is fostering a move away from the traditional distinction between the two main paradigms in marketing that dealt separately with the business-to-customer and business-to-business situation. Technology is enabling greater focus supported by accurate profiles via the transactional database. Undoubtedly, precision marketing is the future. There is a concomitant emphasis away from products as such to an emphasis on facilitating process.

Evaluation

Introduction

I started this project by experimenting with different materials and creating different mark making. I also produced several different still life studies.

Research

I got my primary research from producing observational drawings of different artists

work, such as Kurt Schwitters.I got my secondary research from

looking back over my sketchbook and using the Internet to find more information and studies of Kurt schwitters. I recorded my research by finding a lot of artists work and stuck them into my sketchbook, and then wrote up about them.

Development of Ideas

I tried to recreate my machine part still life by using collage and paints. This worked very well and achieved the Kurt Schwitters style I wanted and was similar to his work. This was the best media I used. I also explored lots of other different ideas by doing several experiments using different materials, such as decollage. The materials and media I used were charcoal, rubber, paint, collage and ink.

I also encountered two problems while I did this project. They were remembering where I was working the week before and remembering where each item in my still life was placed. The other problem I had was my scale on my skulls. I found this hard and stressful sometimes. I overcame this problem by measuring different areas and lines with a pencil. This was a great help and made my scale look correct.

Realising intentions and conclusion

I feel that I have achieved what I hoped with my brief as I have used a range of

different media that I would not normally use. The time plan helped me kept on task

, but I did get behind a bit because I wanted to finish my designs and produce a couple more still life studies. The feedback from other students was very useful and helpful

because it suggested different ideas of what you can do to improve your work.

The connection between my final piece and Kurt Schwitters work is that I used found materials in my work to create an atmosphere of coldness. Using college in my final piece was a really good idea I had as it created depth and form. The composition of the machine parts worked very well.

If I had to improve my work and were able to tackle the same brief I would liked to keep with my brief better because I got behind in certain places. I would also like to work back into my final outcome to add little details with a fine brush because I think that would finish of the final piece better.

Domination versus Subordination

What do the terms domination and subordination mean? Webster’s dictionary defines domination as the act of dominating; exercise in power of ruling; whereas subordination is subject to the will of another and lower in rank or importance. One would consider these definitions as our cultural normalcies; however, different cultures place more emphasis on one more than the other. The meaning delves deeper than what lies on the surface. As one person can be dominant one moment, they may also be subordinate the next, as Odysseus showed in his great epic, the Odyssey. Domination and subordination are always at the point of interchange. There are many attributes to consider when considering whether one is dominate or subordinate. While one culture might value heroism as an attribute of domination, another might place more emphasis on servitude, making subordination a clearly more valuable attribute. In the Western text, The Song of Roland, and the Eastern text The Ramayana, domination and subordination are both incorporated, however, the Eastern text celebrates submission more whereas the Western text celebrates domination.

In the Western text, The Song of Roland, domination is an important element of the Western culture. What constitutes domination in this ancient text? One act of domination shows that whether one is ill-fated or not, continuation is a must. Roland showed this type of domination. He did not want to back down from the pagan force. He did not see death as an option at the time when Oliver suggested that he blow his horn to sound for back-up from the French. Roland replies “I’d be a fool to do it. I would lose my good name all through sweet France. I will strike now…I promise you, they are marked men, they’ll die” (74). This shows courage in the eye of danger. Although Oliver was the more level-headed of the two, the poem sings the glory of Roland more since he was the one in charge. When Roland finally realized that death was inevitable he sounded the horn, as if it had been his idea all along. Oliver went along with it since he was submissive to Roland.

In most texts, domination and subordination coincide. With domination, one must have a subordinate being underneath them. This is true in The Song of Roland. Oliver, Roland’s dear and entrusted friend, had the qualities of being subordinate. He was submissive to the demands and wishes of Roland. Said Oliver “The pagan force is great; from what I see, our French here are too few. Roland, my companion, sound your horn then, Charles will hear it, the army will come back” (74). Roland, however, did not want to submit to the pleas of his friend, since he was the dominant one, so he pressed onward. Oliver submitted to the wishes of Roland. Both of these men had amazing courage, Roland for facing the pagan’s with full force, and Oliver for being wise enough to see when defeat was inevitable. In other cultures, such of those of the East, Oliver might have been seen as dominant within a certain degree in his submissive actions, since subordination was of greater value.

In the Eastern text, The Ramayana, the value was shifted more towards subordination than it was on domination. Rama, King Dasaratha’s oldest son, was submissive to his father. The king thought himself as old and wanted to turn the kingdom over to Rama. However, King Dasaratha had promised two boons to Kaikeyi and one of which she used to make her own son, Bharata, the new king. Therefore, King Dasaratha had to send his son into exile. Rama then said, “For there is no greater act of righteousness than this obedience to one’s father and doing as he bids” (58). Rama was subservient to the wishes of his father and, “did all that was required to please and benefit the people of the city” (581). His father thought of Rama as the one who brought him the greatest joy because he was so virtuous and showed reverence to him. This is much like the story of Joseph, in which his father thought most kindly of him. This made Rama and Joseph loyal and virtuous, which was a major attribute to their subservient culture.

Since subordination can not work alone, domination is always lurking in the midst. It is true that in this culture, subordination was the attribute most thought of as virtuous and respectable. However, domination was present. King Dasaratha had the power of ruling over his people. He excised this power to the greatest of his ability. Although he had the utmost love for his son, he had to send his son into exile within the forest. Being king, his domination was more like a curse than a gift. Since he was ruler over all, he had to send his own flesh and blood out into the unknown, for that was the culturally accepted thing for the dominant character to do in regards of being king.

To be dominant and to be subordinate are two entirely different characteristics. However, in order for one to exist the other must also exist. There is always a line between a leader and a follower, whether it is thick or thin. The most important thing to remember is that no matter where one goes, whether it is to the east or the west, these two attributes will be found. That is when one must decide which one is more commonly appropriate in that culture. There is a time and a place to be dominant and to be subservient.

The 0th-century French novelist Andr Malraux proclaimed that modern art begins with the great Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Born in 1746 in the Spanish province of Aragon, the fiercely independent and relentlessly innovative Goya tackled a wide range of media and subject matter over the course of his half-century career. One of Spains most celebrated artists, he served as a court painter to King Charles IV and counted such influential individuals as the renowned Duchess of Alba and royal adviser Manuel Godoy among his patrons. Though he suffered a near-fatal illness at age 47 that left him deaf, Goya went on to paint some of his most famous canvases, including his scandalous, at the time, Naked Maja.

This aspect of Goya, writes author Stanley Meisler, his portraits of women and his relations with them, has inflamed imaginations for generations. From his early tapestry designs to his compelling portraits, provocative gentlemens paintings, engaging genre scenes and satirical etchings and drawings, Goya portrayed the multifaceted world of womenstreet vendors, gypsies, noblewomen, heroines, old crones, mothers, mourners, and victims of violencewith a sensitivity and realism unparalleled in his time. Painting during the time of the French Revolutiona period when the role of women, at least in urban and upper-class society, was beginning to changeGoya was more ironic commentator than feminist advocate, and his attitude toward women was both ambivalent and complex.

Woman is goddess and witch for Goya, sinner and saint, lover and procurer, worker and aristocrat, says Francisco Calvo Serraller of Madrids Prado Museum. Calvo Serraller is the organizer and cocurator of a new exhibition, Goya Images of Women, that opened in Madrid last fall and is now on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. through June , 00. Guest curated in Washington by Janis A. Tomlinson, a leading authority on Goya, the show is accompanied by an illustrated catalog from the Gallery and Yale University Press.

There are very few artists, says Tomlinson, who were as proficient in as many media, who were constantly experimenting with new themes and who were always driven to go beyond where theyd been before.

The best tack-type in nature has been the carpet-type of tack, as foretold in the beginning, time-wise. As luck would have it, all individuals, that have lived to a ripe old age, have had knowledgeness of the intensity of this majestic tack. The performance of an acid test on these carpet-type tacks, would in nature be one of the finer things in life, making anyone who had done this, be busy as a bee, work-wise. The coolness and sturdyism of these pompous tack-like objects in manner, could be defective, but, as far as these slow but sure makers of the tacks are concerned, they were the most non-explosionable objects ever, tack-wise. Walt Disney has been successful in making wonderful animated movies not just loved by the children but by other elders too. Disney succeeds in teaching our children a very vital lesson in life, how good looks and fame does not stand for true love. Beauty and the Beast, Walt Disney’s 11 instant classic, I consider the finest animated movie ever made, deserving a prominent position on my list of all-time greats. I always knew that Beauty and the Beast was one of my favorite movies, but not until recently my conscience discovered the fondness for this movie. Irresistible appears to be an apt description of this film because every frame is imbued with an exceptional magic for any motion picture, animated or otherwise.

As a child Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella contributed to be my favorite movies, but I guess Beauty and the Beast definitely changed my opinion. On the contrary, now it has become a ritual or a passion to watch every weekend with my niece, bringing hilarity for my peers. My friends laughed and told me about my impulse for this movie. For some reason, I did not take their joke seriously at first until I realized how many times I have watched it with my niece.

I remember this one time my friend, Alicia, having a guy problem. Her boyfriend, Jamie, often acted “high and mighty”, and Ali (Alicia) did not like that attitude a tad. She told me how her boyfriend mistreated one of her friends because her monetary status did not match with Jamie’s or Ali’s. At that point, Jamie reminded me of the Beast, once a conceited young prince who turned away a beggar woman who came to his door for shelter from the storm. In return the beggar woman who turned out to be a beautiful enchantress placed a spell on the castle, and only when the prince learned to love and be loved the curse would break. When I correlated the Beast with Jamie, Alicia chuckled saying something about my itch for this movie which in reality made me ponder on her mock. Even though Alicia was not the only person to spot the remarks that I somehow relate to this movie, the thought of my obsession remained indigestible. Does relating little incidents with film’s concept in our life mean obsession with the movie?

After that, for the last two years, for the Halloween dinner, I have been making my niece dress like Belle, the main character of the story. Consequently, last year her mother, apparently my sister, instantly said, “Ah, Belle from Beauty and the Beast must be your aunt Shivangi.” Right that minute I realized that maybe I do have a little craze for this movie. Apart from the Halloween excuse, even the screen saver on my personal computer is of Belle and the beast downloaded straight from the Disney website, “supposedly” for my niece’s love for that movie. This brings to my attention that I used my niece simply as a scapegoat to hide my passion for this film.

What makes this brilliant movie different? Why do I love watching it over and over again? Well this film seems different from those usual fairy tales where the prince rescues the princess, and they fall in love with each other. In this motion picture, Marian Belle, the main character of the narrative, lived with her father- a nutty inventor. Hence, that gave the town people the idea of Belle being a little out of the ordinary. Her name means beauty, and it is revealed by her magnificent appearance throughout the duration of the movie. Gaston, the dignified warrior of the town, wanted by every girl, displays true love for Belle. Surprisingly, Belle sees right through his beauty and recognizes him as an unkind and conceited fool who does not know how to love.

Meanwhile, when Belle’s father is locked in the dungeon by the hideous beast in his castle, Belle agrees to be a prisoner instead for the rest of her life. This shows the family values in her character, again teaching us the most important aspect of life love. Further in the movie, Belle resides in the castle with no fear for the beast. She teaches him how to eat, live, act, and read like human beings which results in love between them. At first Belle does not realize about the feelings developed in her heart for the beast, but the gruesome monster shows his love for Belle by releasing her from his imprisonment to go help her father. In the end, when the last petal of the rose given by the enchantress is about to fall, Belle confesses her love for the beast breaking the spell on the castle. This closure shows that love can convert an evil and unkind man into a generous loveable individual.

My favorite characters in this movie consist of the three playful servants of the prince. Lumiere, the castle maitre d’, turned into a candlestick after the curse; Mrs. Potts, the housekeeper, changed into a teapot along with her fun-loving son Chip, turned into a teacup; and last but not the least, Cogsworth was the castle’s butler changed into a clock. Mrs. Potts guided the enchanted beast on how to talk and deal with Belle’s emotions, thoroughly aware of the consequences if anything went wrong. Lumiere and Cogsworth always fought on silly comments each had and not failing to serve their master by guiding him how to impress Belle. In my opinion, these three characters played a vital role and contributed equally in their love story.

This animated motion picture has various special editions, too. For instance, Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Christmas, an insertion into the story is about Belle deciding to organize a secret Christmas Eve party without the permission of the beast and how Belle’s love makes the master change his opinion about Christmas. Along with this, a recently released special edition of Beauty and the Beast Belle’s Magical World is a full-length movie that brims with delightful stories and songs, and all my favorite characters and voice cast from the acclaimed and beloved movie masterpiece. From these versions, I discovered how true friendship and cooperation can turn a gloomy castle into an enchanted palace fit for a Princess like Belle. When I went to see these movies, I was amazed to know that I am not the only fan of Belle and the Beast.

After all these facts I honestly confess that, yes, I am a fan of Disney’s movie Beauty and the Beast. When I relate day to day conversations of my life with this movie, it just tells me what important place it occupies in my heart and mind. But nothing can now change my craze for this intriguing movie. I am sure from this moment my niece will not be used as an excuse to hide my obsession for this movie, and I will continue to watch this family movie. In fact, I plan to go buy the other two additional versions of the film for myself and not just for my six year old niece. According to my standpoint, this romantic tale teaches us that love can change ones attitude and conveys a significant message that inner beauty has more important than physical appearances for true love.

This ageless tale proves to be a family feature that someone over the age of eighteen can venture into without an accompanying child. I unquestionably find this movie irresistible and certainly continue watching it repeatedly.

Risk Management - Titanic

1. Introduction

The main focus of this report will analyse the failure to manage the risks, which led to the Titanic disaster that occurred in April 11. The areas, which will be looked into, include what caused the accident, the risks that were underestimated and also any apparent risk management strategy. The report will also detail the reasons for mishandling the risks and their implications and also highlight any lessons, which were learnt from the occurrence of this disaster.

The RMS Titanic was the biggest ship built to that date. It was to be a maritime legend at the cutting edge of ship design. The Titanic was thought to be unsinkable because it had sixteen watertight compartments that rose well above the water level.

AT the time ships were expected to stay afloat for a number of hours, even days and in the busy shipping lanes of the Atlantic would have plenty opportunity for rescue. With this in mind it was designed to stay afloat with two or even three watertight compartments flooded.

She was the largest moving object ever to be designed and built by human beings. At the time the British maritime industry had fallen behind their European counterparts, especially Germany. The Titanic was to be a sign that the British industry was back to its best and the White Star Line, the company that owned the Titanic, was at the forefront. Safety was of the utmost importance, reflected by her double-bottomed hull and complex system of watertight compartments.

The Titanic left Southampton on its maiden voyage on 10 April11. This was to be its first and last departure.

. Risks

On April 14 11 at 1140 PM the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage, struck an iceberg. The collision was not head-on but the Titanic eventually sank at 0 am.

.1. Poor design

The Titanic had 16 watertight compartments and the designer Thomas Andrews said the ship could stay afloat with 4 of them flooded. However the walls of the compartments only rose part of the way up the ship and the compartments could not be completely sealed, as there was no ceiling. In the event of a compartment being flooded, thick steel bulkhead doors could be closed sealing the compartment. The risk of not sealing the compartments completely was a great one and turned out to be a fatal one. The owners, White Star Line, did not see this as taking a risk however as the ship was designed to float with of the compartments flooded. When the ship struck the iceberg it put a gash in the side of the ship resulting in 6 of the compartments being flooded. As there was no ceiling the water spilled over the top flooding each one in turn causing the ship to sink by the bow.

In addition to this poor design the rudder was not large enough to steer a ship of this size. There were two large stern propellers at the rear, which were used to power and steer the ship. The direction of the ship was directed by the rudder, which was controlled from the bridge by means of a steering wheel. The rudder directed the flow of water from the propellers moving the ship to port or starboard. The propellers were so large and the rudder so small it made it difficult to steer the boat under emergency conditions. The rudder was smaller than it should have been because the owners wanted to save money. They took this risk as they thought the size of the rudder would be sufficient. This cost saving risk proved a very large one as the ship was unable to turn to avoid collision with the iceberg.

(Marriott, Leo 17), Titanic TRC Publishing Ltd

The first warning of this difficulty to turn was when the ship pulled out the harbour from Southampton. A nearby boat, the New York was pulled into the boat’s wake due to the large suction force from such large propellers. The ship was unable to avoid collision and it was only by the work of tugboats, which pushed the New York back into its position in the harbour.

When the iceberg was spotted avoidance measures was taken. These included switching the engines to ‘hard astern’ and the wheel hard to port. In usual circumstances with propellers and rudders equally matched this manoeuvre would avoid a collision. Although the ship did turn, it did not turn quickly or hard enough.

.. Warnings

Prior to the collision with the iceberg, Titanic had received 7 warnings from other ships in the area, of icebergs and packed ice on the route the Titanic was heading. These warnings were received on the Marconi wireless system, but Captain Smith did not receive them all and did not reduce the speed from knots nor change his course to avoid them. This was a very big risk taken by the captain as he put the lives of his passengers and crew at risk. Most ships when warned by icebergs, changed their course south.

The Titanic had stationed two lookouts in the crow’s nest. Their job was to check the course ahead and to warn the bridge of any obstacles or hazards they may encounter. Their job was made more difficult due to a lack of equipment such as binoculars or telescope, which were missing since departure from Southampton. The conditions that high in the ship and the drop in temperature meant that their eyes were streaming and it was difficult to see.

The weather conditions also had a large effect on their job. That night the sea was very calm which made it even more difficult to notice icebergs, as they could not see the water breaking at the foot of them. There was no moon in the sky either, restricting their view further.

.. Lifeboats

Due to the design of the boat, the lifeboats were placed too high up the boat and in some instances boats were dropped into the water rather than lowered. The ropes were too short to get them into the water. This made the task of lowering the passengers into the water longer and more dangerous.

However the Titanic did not carry enough lifeboats to get everyone off the ship. The only British regulation at the time was that any ship over10, 000 tonnes had to have at least 16 life boats so the Titanic was well under regulations with 0 lifeboats with16 normal wooden lifeboats 4 special collapsible. The lifeboats held in total 1178 people and the total number of passengers was 4. Thomas Andrews wanted more but the owner of the Titanic, Mr J. Bruce Ismay did not want “so many little boats …cluttering up his decks and putting fear into his passengers.”

The crew responsible for the filling and lowering of the lifeboats had not been properly trained and the lifeboat drill usually held on a Sunday after the Sunday services for passengers and crew was cancelled by Captain Smith. Due to the crew’s lack of training they did not know the capacity of each boat and all but one was under laden.

Many of the passengers were unaware of the collision, which made the task of getting everybody into the lifeboats very difficult. The rule of the sea, women and children first was not closely adhered to at first, as there were not many people queuing to get into the lifeboats. This was because the damage could not be seen from the passenger accommodation and the collision was not felt by many. The Titanic did not have a public address system and instructions from crew to passengers were not accurate and were conducted against the noise of steam blowing off from the boilers as the engines were stopped.

.. Rescue Attempts

While the ship was sinking the wireless operators continually sent out SOS signals stating their position and requesting help immediately. The nearest ship responding was the Carpathia and went ahead full speed to assist. The Carpathia was over 4 hours away and the ship’s designer Thomas Andrews who was aboard for her maiden voyage estimated that the ship would sink in less than hours due to the fact that 6 of her compartments had been flooded.

Passengers aboard the ship claimed that other ships were sighted while the ship was sinking, however they did not come to help but sailed away from them. The Titanic sent distress rockets into the sky to alert the attention of any other ships nearby. “One ship was the Californian that was between 5 and 10 miles away and must have seen the distress rockets but failed to act. The radio operator was asleep at the time and therefore did not receive the SOS and CQD (come quick danger) messages. Had she done so she might have been able to save some if not all of the lives that were lost.” (Howells, Richard 1) The Myth of the Titanic, St Martins Press Ltd

. Outcomes

.1 Who is to blame?

The Titanic disaster was mainly due to the excessive speed it was travelling at and a proper watch was not kept. The design of the ship is also at fault as the watertight compartments were not exactly ‘watertight’ and also the lifeboats should have been at a better height. The captain was not necessarily negligent as he did not do anything, which was out of the ordinary. It was not unusual to not change course or reduce speed after receiving warnings.

.. Lessons learnt

The regulations for ships changed following this disaster and the provision of lifeboats to accommodate every person on the ship was made a legal requirement. The British commission also called for more watertight compartments on ships and better regulation of lookouts. It was also recommended that regular boat, fire and watertight drills be held on the ships. It was also regulated that “all foregoing passenger and emigrant ships should be required to carry wireless telegraphy equipment and this should provide a 4-hour continuous service.” (Howells, Richard 1) The Myth of the Titanic, St Martins Press Ltd

4. Conclusion

The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on Sunday 14 April at 11.40 pm. The collision was not head-on but it cut a gash in the starboard side causing 5 of the watertight compartments to flood. This caused the ship to sink by the bow and by .0 am the ship was lost. There were many risks involved in the disaster including poor design, ignoring warning signs and not enough lifeboats. The crew who were in charge of loading and lowering the lifeboats were not trained properly and no one was aware of the procedures they had to follow. They did not know the capacity of the lifeboats and this resulted in many of them being less than half full thus causing the loss of many more lives. The wireless system was a new invention at the time and not many ships had them and they were not regulated. If the operator of the Californian had been on duty at the time the ship would have been able to save some, if not all the passengers on the Titanic.

Following this disaster, there were regulations made on lifeboats, watertight compartments and lookouts. The Titanic disaster highlighted the problems with ships and in a way if it had not happened then another disaster would have happened not long after.

Eudora Welty’s writing style and use of characters and setting aided her in becoming one of the greatest writers of all time. Welty credits her family for her success. Eudora remembers the importance of reading in her childhood home. The influences of her father and mother have made her a more universal writer. Eudora has been surrounded by strong characters throughout her lifetime.

One of her characters from “A Visit Of Charity” was named Marian. Marian was a young girl whom had yellow hair and covered it with a pointed white cap and wore a red coat. Marian was a Campfire Girl. The young girl had decided to go to the nursing home to receive points for Campfire Girls. She brought with her a potted flower to brighten up the place.

The sound of a bleating sheep turned out to be the next character in “A Visit Of Charity”. She was an older woman with a bony face and bony fingers. She was a talkative old lady, but she was polite. She welcomed Marian to come into her cluttered room, where furniture was spread everywhere. Not only was the room cluttered but also it was dark, and cold. The young girl even told us how it felt wet and damp, even on the floor.

Addie was the other older woman in the room. Addie stayed in her bed all day with the window blinds shut. She was not too friendly; she was very loud and obnoxious. Addie and the other older woman have seemed to live in that dark cluttered room for a long time, since they knew so much about each other. Addie seemed to be sick the day that Marian came to visit. The first old lady tells us that it is poor Addie’s birthday, which she will not admit.

The three main characters in “A Visit Of Charity” were all very different yet they made the story work. The two old women stayed in this dreary nursing home with no connection to the outside world. Marian, a young girl, who just wanted to gain some extra points for Campfire Girls, brings them a potted flower to brighten up their gloomy room. The potted plant seems to be symbolic of the two women. The girl bringing the flower really shows the life of the two women in a different light.

After reading the story “A Visit Of Charity” really proves that Eudora Welty did use characters and setting to help aid in her writing. Eudora used the characters and setting to create the story line. She made everything fit together perfectly. The strong characters that she was around in her life time definitely did influence her.

How we see and understand things constantly alters and reforms. Time and experience allow us to develop and change our attitudes and perceptions of everything people, events, ides, and even ourselves. Most of the time we are not overly conscious of this occurring but nonetheless, it is occurring. Indeed it is a natural process and not something that can be easily stopped or controlled. If you think about what you viewed as important in the world when you were five, ten and fifteen you will have some immediate idea of this process.

Generally we develop views and attitudes about the world and ourselves by being influenced by our experiences. These include being exposed to and influenced by certain belief systems (such as those of our parents and peers) as well as by what we see and experience (such as TV or an important personal experience). It is very important to understand that everyone sees things differently and, therefore, form different opinions of events and people.

Eyewitnesses of the one event can have very different views of what happened and why, in any given situation. Who they are and their previous experiences and value systems might determine this, or they might witness the events from some limited point of view. When we speak of perspective we are thinking about all these things.

It is not the way you look that is important, but the way you feel about yourself. Every day billboards, television ads, magazines, and the everyday Joe Shmoe, are brainwashing today’s society to believe that they have to look as perfect and pristine as a supermodel. To tell you the truth, with out all of they layers of caked on makeup, the perfectly hardened in place hair, and the expensively tight clothing, supermodels aren’t as perfect and pristine as they want us to believe.

In the summer of 000, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a fashion model. I did all the research on local agencies and came across one that was willing to meet me.

The “interview” was only a couple of days after I called. I showed up looking like I just stepped off the runway, and they decided to take me the minute I stepped foot in the door. My first gig with them was at a big modeling convention where you go and strut your stuff in front of all the top agencies from across the nation. Let me tell you, the feeling you get when you are walking down the runway with all the lights and eyes on you and walking perfectly in step with the heart thumping music, is a feeling I will never forget. I felt as if I was on top of the world!

After the convention, my agency told me that I was too short to walk the runway at a fashion show and that I had to lose weight. Unfortunately, I weighted 105lbs and was 5’5”, and was already underweight for my height and age. Nevertheless, I listened to my agency, and stopped eating completely, and only drinking water.

I denied that I was anorexic until my best friend had me stand in from of a mirror, only wearing my bikini, and take a close look at my self and see that I was literally skin and bones. I looked like I was extremely sick and like I was on the verge of death.

The last gig I ever did was a hair show for Wella, the number two beauty company in the world, the number one being L’Oreal. That was a lot of fun. I had at least four people messing with my hair, makeup, and clothes, all at one time. Unfortunately, the things they did to my hair ruined it. In a span of two days my hair was stripped of it’s color, dyed, bleached, dyed again, permed, crimped, and a whole lot more that I’m not going to ramble on and on about.

When that gig was over, my agency told me I still had to lose more weight when I weighted at most 100 lbs, and that I had to cut my hair. That is where I drew the line. If I lost any more weight I would have gone in to the hospital and be fed through my nose. I did not want that and no one, not family, not friends, not even I was going to cut my long hair. No way, no how! To top it off I was not going to change my looks or myself for anyone, not even my parents or my boyfriend. I realized that it is not worth it.

No matter what someone says, you should not have to change anything about yourself in order to live up to the media and society’s perception of beauty. It is not worth it to risk your health and lose your self-respect just to fit in. Nothing can ever change the fact that you are who you are, and you will be that way forever.

KFC: DOING CHICKEN RIGHT IN THE U.S. FAST FOOD INDUSTRY

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like KFC: DOING CHICKEN RIGHT IN THE U.S. FAST FOOD INDUSTRY even at the eleventh hour. KFC DOING CHICKEN RIGHT IN THE U.S. FAST FOOD INDUSTRY

Based on the case study, an industry analysis identifies the following issues which serve as a driving force in the U.S. fast food industry. These factors shape the market environment for each fast food outlet as it portrays current trends which are emerging and trends already in place in this competitive environment

Industry sales growth in the U.S. fast food industry is falling. This occurs as the industry is maturing. As a result there is intensive competition among fast-food chains. Market share gains are increasingly achieved by taking customers away from existing competitors rather than by attracting new customers into the industry.

There is also a significant amount of industry consolidation. Significant merger and acquisition activity during the last decade has consolidated many fast-food chains within the same organization. Some of the most notable acquisitions are Pillsbury

Write my paper for me!!!

S acquisition of Burger Kings, General Food of Burger Chef, United brand’s acquisition of Baskin Robbins Great Western’s acquisitions of Shakey’s Pizza and PepsiCo acquired Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

The globalization of the fast food industry has seen many of the top 0 fast-food chains have expanded aggressively abroad as a means of growing sales outside of the U.S. market.

Diversification of fast-food outlets (e.g., McDonalds, Wendys, Arbys, and Hardees have aggressively marketed a variety of chicken sandwiches, and Hardees has introduced fried chicken).

Customers are increasing health conscious in the United States. This has increased pressure on fast-food chains to offer products with lower fat content and cholesterol.

There is also greater consumer demand for a wider variety of menu offerings and food selection.

As most consumers are experienced, repeat buyers they are familiar with their favorite chains products. Therefore, competitors are increasingly turning to promotions, price reductions and other techniques to attract repeat customers.

There is a huge consumer demand for fast-food in non-traditional outlets (e.g., shopping malls, airports, etc.).

Profit margins are also lower as operating costs increase along with pressure from competitors lower pricing strategies.

PORTER’S MODEL

The Porter’s five forces model is a composite of five competitive forces that can assess the state of competitiveness in a given industry. Based on the model below, an assessment of the U.S. fast food industry is compiled.

The rivalry among competing sellers. This is the strongest of the five competitive forces. In the U.S. fast food industry there is intense rivalry and competition for market share among existing fast foods. There is also low customer switching costs which increase pressure on chains to attract customers through advertising, new product offerings and price discounts. Another significant point faced among competitors is the slowing industry sales growth.

The potential entry of new competition (weak force). New entrants to a market bring new production capacity and substantial resources with which to compete. However in the U.S. fast food industry, new entrants face high entry barriers. Economics of scale deter entry as it forces new entrants to enter at a cost advantage point which results in lower profitability. Many customers have strong loyalty to individual fast food chains therefore a potential entrant needs to have the adequate resources for advertising and sales promotions to build its own customer base which is a slow and costly process. New entrants need to face high fixed costs of market entry as the existing fast foods in the U.S. have the advantage of the best and cheapest suppliers of food items, equipment built years earlier at lower costs, favorable locations and lower borrowing costs.

Competitive pressure from substitute products (strong force). Substitute products are a strong force in the U.S. fast food industry because there are a variety of eating alternatives available such as dinner houses, pizza outlets or even sandwich chains. Customer switching costs are low therefore it is easier for customers to make the switch.

Competitive pressure resulting from supplier bargaining power and supplier-seller collaboration (weak force). In the U.S. fast food industry suppliers have little or no bargaining power because there are many suppliers in the market with the capability to fulfill orders as the items needed by the fast food industry such as paper and plastic are standardized commodities, hence readily available.

Competitive pressures stemming from customers. This is a strong force in the U.S. fast food industry as the customers have substantial leverage. This is because customer switching costs are low. Customers are also price and quality sensitive as a result if they are unhappy with the price or the quality of a product they can delay purchases or buy from a competitor restaurant.

According to Porter’s model, the U.S. fast food industry is not attractive. Three of the five forces (substitute products, competitors and customers) are strong. It is an intensely competitive industry with low profit margins. The industry growth rate is slowing and there is high market share among the fast food industry. It would be considered a “cash cow” industry using the Boston Consulting Group matrix. The segment market share is in the most attractive position because of their ability to leverage assets and lower costs through economies of scale (e.g., McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy’s Red Lobster, Pizza Hut and KFC). It is certainly an unattractive industry for new entrants, which have to overcome high fixed costs of entry, economies of scale disadvantages, strong brand recognition among existing chains and the risk of strong retaliation by existing competitors who will only increase advertising and promotions to reinforce their position in the U.S. fast food industry.

It is apparent that in order to be successful in the U.S. fast food industry any emerging competition needs to match up to the industries key success factors of having product quality and consistency, quality service, maintaining cleanliness, enhanced perceived value and have low operating costs.

KFC’S RESOURCES AND CAPABILITIES

Am analysis of KFC’s internal environment based on the case study is assesses. The following key points have been identifies

STRENGTHS

A key strength for KFC is the very fact that customers are loyal to the brand. This is evident as KFC held a worldwide market share of over 70 percent in both sales and restaurant. This naturally leads to KFC having gained strong customer awareness and to be the market share leader. Also apart from having been in the fast food industry since 154, has enable them to have proprietary recipes and technology. KFC also has strong marketing expertise foundation within the U.S, fast food industry which foreign fast food companies will face difficulty in developing.

WEAKNESSES.

Many of the KFC outlets are aged, small, have limited seating and cater for take out diners only. KFC also lacks product innovation beyond chicken. KFC has a reputation for poor service and lack of cleanliness.

The external market environment factors are also identified to assess KFC’s capabilities.

OPPURTUNITIES

As part of KFC’s effort to sustain its sales growth, KFC should consider new market bases by focusing on international expansion. KFC can also take steps towards the development of a lunch day promotion which focuses on its menu offerings as a complete and wholesome lunch meal, It should also expand its all-you-can-eat buffets to more outlets across the nations. As consumers’ preference changes to a choice of healthy food, KFC should introduce a new product line focusing on roasted chicken. KFC can also diversify into non chicken products to cater to increase their menu offering which result in giving customers more choice for dining at their restaurants. As KFC is expanding to locations outside the U.S. steadily and gaining much popularity abroad, they need to include the promotion of ethnic foods in their menu. KFC can also look into expansion plans of new outlet to be located in non traditional locations such as colleges and airports. As KFC has ongoing efforts of building new restaurants, in suburbs (traditional locations) it is suggested that KFC considers the promotion of home delivery in order to accommodate customers in need of faster take out services.

THREATS

One of the major threats faced by KFC is the entry of upscale food chains who are aggressively promoting non fried chicken such as Chick-fill-A, Kenny Rogers and Boston Chicken. KFC’s menu is limited in variety compared to many of its competitors such as Mc Donald’s and Wendy’s. These competitors along with other sandwich chains have begun to introduce chicken sandwiches. Hardee’s, a sandwich chain has started to offer fried chicken as part of their menu offers to customers. This can affects KFC, which competes exclusively within the chicken segment.

STRATEGIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR KFC

CORPORATE LEVEL STRATEGY

Based on the findings reported in KFC’s market environment, the corporate level strategy could focus on expansion into international markets to deflect further declining margins reflected in the increasing maturity in the U.S. fast food industry. KFC’s corporate strategy goal should be to maintain market share and leadership by seeking contemporary business ventures that create long term benefits.

BUSINESS LEVEL STRATEGY

KFC’s business strategy goal should be to gain and maintain sustainable competitive advantage in business environment since they are in the maturity stage. This can be achieved by adopting a product leadership strategy where KFC’s concentration is to offer customers food that is high in quality by encouraging innovation in the menu offering.

OPERATIONAL LEVEL STRATEGY

KFC’s operational level strategy should focus on its product, price, distribution and promotional strategy.

PRODUCT STRATEGY

KFC needs to concentrate on the development of its mature core product fried chicken and fries. Product choice would change little, since the menu has remained true to its core items. However it could extend its product offering by planning and testing for an innovative bank of new products by utilizing existing technologies and tools in place. These products should be close to the brands core proposition. It would help generate new revenue to the organization without sacrificing the sales of core products. The inclusion of new products adapted to local culture should also be brought into the market as part of KFC’s products offering,

For example In Mexico, KFC could introduce a nachos wrap burger with salsa dressing.

In Malaysia, KFC could offer chicken porridge as part of the menu.

In China, KFC can include chicken soup as part of a set meal.

PRICE STRATEGY

KFC’s pricing strategy goal should be to make their product affordable and a good value to their customers. In order to achieve this, KFC’s pricing structure should be set to match or beat competitors. By matching competitors pricing, KFC can offer customers a zero based switching cost. Thus inducing customers to view KFC as an alternative to their favored fast food choice. Having said that, effective pricing is not an easy task as it could cost an organization a lost in sales or even generate an increase in revenue.

DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY

As KFC is in the maturity stage, it should concentrate on building more intensive distribution methods. Attractive franchise contracts should be applied to retain some competent franchisees, since franchise is a very common contractual form for the fast food industry. Loss of franchisees could not only undermine the Company’s business, but also help the competitor if they jumped the boat to the competitor. KFC should use the benefits of franchising to maximize profits as franchises incur most of the start up costs, therefore KFC can expand more quickly through company owned restaurants. Franchisees also provide a steady stream of royalty to organization well into the future.

KFC should not only focus on Latin America but also on other international markets. This way it can maximize possible economic crisis in one region with the profits of another region.

PROMOTION STRATEGY

KFC’s promotion strategy should emphasis on its brand differences and benefits to customers. It should formulate an advertising strategy that when customers see the word ‘KFC’, they are automatically associated as a wholesome meal plan for customers and viewed as affordable with good product value, It should deflect customers from focusing on fried chicken but view KFC as a wholesome meal plan. KFC should increase sales promotions in order to encourage brand switching among customers. This can be done via in store promotions such as coupons with every meal purchase, scratch and win competitions, back to school goodie bags with every purchase of set meals and even include a kids menu.

SUMMARY

KFC is capable of succeeding in the U.S. fast food industry by taking advantage of the industrys key success factors as KFC has high product quality and consistency, customers love KFCs product despite the fact that it is fried and it has gained a strong brand name and customer loyalty.

KFCs leading market share in the chicken segment strengthens consumer awareness, gives it a location advantage, and creates economies of scale in marketing and distribution of its core product. .

KFC can also use maximize opportunities to benefit from technology, management, and market sharing with Pizza Hut and Taco Bell through its parent company, PepsiCo, Inc.

It has further opportunities to low operating costs by sharing the distribution of food products and supplies with Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Finally KFC also has strong expertise and experience in doing business outside of the United States. It has a strong brand image in other countries across the region. REFERENCE
