Helen Keller was born on June 7, 1880, in Tuscumbia, which is a little town in northern Alabama. The majority of the story took place in her house and the cottage that Ann Sullivan and Helen lived in. In the first months of her life everything seemed to be fine but at eighteen months of age, in the month of February Helen came down with the illness in which she described as the “illness which closed my eyes and ears and plunged me into the unconsciousness of a new-born baby.” The doctors called her illness acute congestion of the stomach and brain. The doctors said that they did not think that she would live through this illness. Helen soon thereafter proved them wrong. After she became used to being blind and deaf, she then felt the need to want to communicate with other’s so she began to use sign’s, and acted out motions to help her do so. Many times throughout her life she threw many tantrums, she would kick and scream till she couldn’t kick and scream anymore, this was purely out of frustration or anger. At one point in time Helen found the use of the key and acted up in that she locked her mother in the pantry and had no bother in not letting her out. After this incident the family realized that Helen needed to be taught as soon as possible. This is when they hired Ann Sullivan. She arrived to help Helen on the third of March in 1887, three months before Helen was seven years old. Helen stated that that day was the most important day I remember in all my life. Sullivan herself had once been blind, but partially recovered after operation but still found it hard to find work. So when the job of teaching Helen Arouse Ann took the job at the drop of a hat. One of the most significant times between Helen and Ann was when Ann led Helen to a water pump on April 5 1887, and pumped water over Helen’s hand and spelled out the word water in her hand. This is when Helen really began to understand.
Helen went through many struggles throughout her life, but in the end after the help of Ann Sullivan, Helen ending up being able to read in several languages, along with speaking too. She eventually graduated with honors from Radcliffe College in 104. Helen gave us all the idea of feeling rather than hearing or for example admiring a flowers motion rather than its color. The instructor listens and then helps him out when he gets confused. This method is a good way of teaching because many students learn better from one another than from the teacher. Also, having the students attempt it alone first is also a good technique because it gets them to think harder rather than just being taught the answer. Learning from making mistakes is an effective way of learning. In the Japanese classroom there was a teacher’s assistant present. He never taught in front of the classroom, but walked around quietly offering help to whoever needed it. When the instructor used the computer to explain the lesson, not only did the students enjoy it, but it also explained the problem with complete accuracy. He longs for the membership he lost, “ he pines for some
nameless Eden where he never was.” The nostalgia is
the stronger and the more ambiguous because he is really
“in the quest of his own absconded self yet scared to find
it.” He both wants to go back and yet thinks he has gone
beyond his class, feels himself weighted with knowledge
of his own and their situation, which hereafter forbids
him the simpler pleasures of his father and mother… (Hoggart 67)
In this passage by Hoggart, that was used by Rodriguez, shows that this student knew he was distancing himself from his parents, yet he still wanted his childhood back. After spending hours of time in his room reading literature that he never had time for friends or even his family. He has separated himself from the world for so long that he has lost who he is. Since this migration took place within both of their races then neither one of them were born nor have visited their country of origin. These numbers seem relatively high compared to the statistics of say blacks or Latinos living in America. As far as “hearsay” is concerned, I also think they’re probably fairly high on the scale. You could probably conclude from this that society perceives them as what they like to call “model minorities”.

Of course he (god) still gave me wat I value the most and that is the way I look at life, I mean some people, I guess most people look at life differently to me, I kinda don’t care any more so im up for anything u know, “live life or life will live u” kinda shit, “fear of death keeps of from living not from dyin” u know that sentence when I read it for the very first time it like hit me and this light kinda came into me life (not really, woulda been cool but), but I was like yea, that’s right, u see some old ppl and they r like travel, why do ya wanta travel, u got it perfect right here and shit, yeah I like aus, but I wanna see shit and then they die and they haven’t done nothing cept for work the same dead end job for the past 50 years and lived in the same go no where town forwver, fuck that man, im not like that man, im open to anything, I love u all u know I love all my friends more than I love life u know, honest if any of em came up to me, even the ones I hardly know, and said I have to die tomorrow, if I had to swap em I would for sure, I love u all that much, I know it sounds pretty corny and shit, but I do, I wish I could have like taken me brothers spot for like at least one week in hospital, spending ya holidays in hospital that’s pretty off man, fuck u god FUCK U, ui mean me and me bro, we hardly ever get sick like when I get sick its cos I spend too much time in the cold or drink too much or something but at the start of the holidays I got sick for no reason, oh no there was a reason for that hehe…, yeha but man, you woulda thought god woulda made him sick in school time at least not in the holidays, I mean he had the last week off school for bein sick, so that’s what weeks already and they wanta keep him in for another week that’s 4 fuckin weeks, goddam.
Imost of my problems aren’t really bout god ay, theyre more like I either do something wrong or say something wrong or just don’t get out and do shit, I think a lot of my problems, even though I love them so much, come from drugs and alcohol, I don’t really know how, I think they just make me more depressed and shit, I wonder if my parents know I do drugs, I guess they do cos one morning I came home and spewed for like an hour and dad walked in and was like wats up and im like fukin sick fuckin drinkin and hes jus like let that be a lesson to me, yeah it was a fuckin lesson, don’t fuckin drink jim beam straight, or if ya do don’t drink a whole bottle, ddamm, never again, I read somewhere that a bottle of beam is 0 standard drinks, damn, and that’s probably mixed, in drunk it like straight, damn, lucky I didn’t die, god I done some fucked up shit in my time, but still I persist and want to do it again and yet again still, u know I cant remember the first time I got stoned, I remember when I first got drunk, I remember when I first had sex, I remember most of the girls that I have felt for over the years, I remember when I got drunk at school, god that was bad, I kinda eased up for a bit after that, it was so funny but, I remember sittin in history tryin to read this thing out for the class and only me mate knew why I was laughin so much and I just couldn’t get it out, god it was funny, everyone just looked at me, one of the teachers found out after that, I don’t know who told her I have me suspicions but, its not like I got in trouble or anything but Ive never really got caught for anything, Ive never really been in a fight I only one time hit me amte and it kinda stopped like that, I know I can hold me own but cos I have glove fights all the time, ive gone toe to toe with a big fella and by like the end of 0 seconds we were both fucked, and hes like twice my size, me and me amte once watched fight club and decided to start our own, this was at the point I was beginning to get tired of life and do anything that came my way, so one time we got drunk went to this park near my house and bashed the fuck out of each other we had one hit each and that hurt like fuck, then we jus went for it god I was sore by like minutes we just stood there like breathin real hard and I jus went im kinda tired… I might go home now… and he was like yea,m and I was like cya tomorrow and we were still mates it was mad, the next time we did it was out at a house at country, were I might end up this weekend surprisingly, that time was bad, I like hit him in the nose and he hit me too and I was bleedin everywhere, I think it was pretty even but, considering how drunk I was and how not-drunk he was….., yeah and I was like bleedin in the toilets for so long, someone came in and I was in the bathroom and id left all these tissues in the toilet cos id forgotten to flush it and they just ran off and were yellin someones got their rags, someones got their rags, it was so funny……. Imost of my problems aren’t really bout god ay, theyre more like I either do something wrong or say something wrong or just don’t get out and do shit, I think a lot of my problems, even though I love them so much, come from drugs and alcohol, I don’t really know how, I think they just make me more depressed and shit, I wonder if my parents know I do drugs, I guess they do cos one morning I came home and spewed for like an hour and dad walked in and was like wats up and im like fukin sick fuckin drinkin and hes jus like let that be a lesson to me, yeah it was a fuckin lesson, don’t fuckin drink jim beam straight, or if ya do don’t drink a whole bottle, ddamm, never again, I read somewhere that a bottle of beam is 0 standard drinks, damn, and that’s probably mixed, in drunk it like straight, damn, lucky I didn’t die, god I done some fucked up shit in my time, but still I persist and want to do it again and yet again still, u know I cant remember the first time I got stoned, I remember when I first got drunk, I remember when I first had sex, I remember most of the girls that I have felt for over the years, I remember when I got drunk at school, god that was bad, I kinda eased up for a bit after that, it was so funny but, I remember sittin in history tryin to read this thing out for the class and only me mate knew why I was laughin so much and I just couldn’t get it out, god it was funny, everyone just looked at me, one of the teachers found out after that, I don’t know who told her I have me suspicions but, its not like I got in trouble or anything but Ive never really got caught for anything, Ive never really been in a fight I only one time hit me amte and it kinda stopped like that, I know I can hold me own but cos I have glove fights all the time, ive gone toe to toe with a big fella and by like the end of 0 seconds we were both fucked, and hes like twice my size, me and me amte once watched fight club and decided to start our own, this was at the point I was beginning to get tired of life and do anything that came my way, so one time we got drunk went to this park near my house and bashed the fuck out of each other we had one hit each and that hurt like fuck, then we jus went for it god I was sore by like minutes we just stood there like breathin real hard and I jus went im kinda tired… I might go home now… and he was like yea,m and I was like cya tomorrow and we were still mates it was mad, the next time we did it was out at a house at country, were I might end up this weekend surprisingly, that time was bad, I like hit him in the nose and he hit me too and I was bleedin everywhere, I think it was pretty even but, considering how drunk I was and how not-drunk he was….., yeah and I was like bleedin in the toilets for so long, someone came in and I was in the bathroom and id left all these tissues in the toilet cos id forgotten to flush it and they just ran off and were yellin someones got their rags, someones got their rags, it was so funny……. Promotion is often described as the fourth and final element in the marketing mix, as conceptualised by McCarthy (de Sáez 1), the other elements being product, price and place. Promotion itself is often divided into a mix, best
understood as a portfolio of promotional techniques or channels, selected to meet the
prescribed objectives of the promotional strategy (Rowley 18). Walters (1)
divides the promotional mix into advertising, personal selling, public relations and
promotions, while Rowley (18) adds direct marketing, sales promotion, and
sponsorship.
There is a common factor between all of these tools of promotion they all
involve or constitute a communication model. Some critics actually refer to the
promotional element of the marketing mix as marketing communication (de Sáez
1). What is the relationship between promotion and communication? Rowley
(18, p. 8) suggests that promotion is one side of the communication process,
the other side being provided by market research, to create a two-way
communication model, described thus

Interpretations of the relationship between the concepts of promotion and
public relations are particularly heterogeneous. Public relations is defined by
Leerburger (18, p. 7) as a management function that establishes and maintains a -
way dialog between an organization and its various publics and to use that dialog to
express a positive influence towards the organization. An alternative definition is
offered by Hart (1, p. 47), who sees public relations as the planned and sustained
communication of you messages to your target markets using the public media of
print, broadcast and electronic press. A rather limited denotation, it focuses on
media to the exclusion of the promotional or public relations event (Krieg-Sigman
15) and the role played by all staff i.e. the embedded public relations value of
quality service delivery (Usherwood 11).
Amidst all of these seemingly confusing statements, have we
developed a useful sense of what promotion is, as well as what it is not? To
summarise, promotion is variously defined as synonymous with, more than, or less
than the related concepts of marketing, public relations, communication and
publicity. However, if we synthesise the available literature, several salient factors
emerge while promotion, public relations and communication can all be said to
involve relationships of influence and meaning, the literature suggests that public
relations and communication, for good or bad, are inevitable. Even when promotion
occurs with inadequate thought and planning, a decision was taken at some level,
however perfunctory and instinctive, to do it. Therefore, promotion is
premeditated. Whether disastrous or wildly successful, a choice is made to
promote or not to promote.
The decision to promote is taken because positive outcomes are expected to
result from the time, resources and effort deployed. Therefore, successful
promotion is partially dependent on meeting clearly articulated objectives. Whether
or not those objectives have been met will be dependent on a process of evaluation.
Promotion is also based on an assumption of quality i.e. that something is worth
promoting, and that the promotion itself ought to be of commensurate quality.
More than simple promulgation, promotion contributes to an onwards and
upwards momentum.
Hamilton (10) distinguished between promoting in order to raise awareness
(publicity), and promoting in order to sell something (marketing).

Cronin (181, p. 85) posits a cumulative advantage theory of promotion,
suggesting that effective promotion will have a snowballing effect and gathering
influence and momentum and easing the way for future promotion, so that success
breeds success.
Rowley (18) translates the objectives of promotional strategies into a
number of categories, including increased sales (equivalent to use in libraries), the
maintenance or extension of the market share, brand recognition, the creation of a
favourable future climate, an informed and educated market, a competitive
advantage and improved promotional efficiency. It is a mixture of short and long
term outcomes, encompassing the cognitive, affective and behaviour stages of the
promotional communication process. Rowley stresses that these objectives must be
adopted in proportions that are appropriate to the individual organisation.
Irving (1, p. ix) plots the potential objectives of marketing along a
continuum which ranges from the direct and palpable, to the indirect and more
enduring outcomes, all contributing to improved funding, support and impact. It
would seem sensible to assume that promotional objectives will correspond closely
with those of the overall marketing strategy.
But why evaluate? Most simply, because there is no other way of
knowing whether promotional objectives are being met and there is no conceivable
justification for not knowing. Moreover, whether those objectives were satisfied or
not, we need to know precisely why (Pickton 18).
Usherwood (181b, p. 166) further asserts that, while it may be difficult,
evaluation (of public relations) is not impossible. He identifies the real problems as
being the difficulty of measuring long-term cumulative effects and the sheer
expense of evaluation, which he estimates, may be greater than the cost of the public
relations effort itself. By implication, evaluation is perhaps the only (albeit costly)
means of justifying the initial expenditure on promotion.
Usherwood (181b, p. 168) also criticises the lack of precision in many of
the evaluative methods thus far identified. We have already looked at the example of
the complex relationship between library promotion and increased use.Usherwood
offers another attendance figures are often recorded at promotional events and cited
as proof of the impact of that promotion, but other evidence suggests that the
people who attend such events are already well informed about the service or topic
being promoted.
Rowley (18, p. 87) adds that it also difficult to separate out the effects of
promotion form other elements of the marketing mix. For evaluation purposes,
Rowley suggests sales figures (presumably for a fee-based information service) and
other measures of reputation, but offers no explanation of what these measures
might involve.

Promotion is often described as the fourth and final element in the marketing mix, as conceptualised by McCarthy (de Sáez 1), the other elements being product, price and place. Promotion itself is often divided into a mix, best
understood as a portfolio of promotional techniques or channels, selected to meet the
prescribed objectives of the promotional strategy (Rowley 18). Walters (1)
divides the promotional mix into advertising, personal selling, public relations and
promotions, while Rowley (18) adds direct marketing, sales promotion, and
sponsorship.
There is a common factor between all of these tools of promotion they all
involve or constitute a communication model. Some critics actually refer to the
promotional element of the marketing mix as marketing communication (de Sáez
1). What is the relationship between promotion and communication? Rowley
(18, p. 8) suggests that promotion is one side of the communication process,
the other side being provided by market research, to create a two-way
communication model, described thus

Interpretations of the relationship between the concepts of promotion and
public relations are particularly heterogeneous. Public relations is defined by
Leerburger (18, p. 7) as a management function that establishes and maintains a -
way dialog between an organization and its various publics and to use that dialog to
express a positive influence towards the organization. An alternative definition is
offered by Hart (1, p. 47), who sees public relations as the planned and sustained
communication of you messages to your target markets using the public media of
print, broadcast and electronic press. A rather limited denotation, it focuses on
media to the exclusion of the promotional or public relations event (Krieg-Sigman
15) and the role played by all staff i.e. the embedded public relations value of
quality service delivery (Usherwood 11).
Amidst all of these seemingly confusing statements, have we
developed a useful sense of what promotion is, as well as what it is not? To
summarise, promotion is variously defined as synonymous with, more than, or less
than the related concepts of marketing, public relations, communication and
publicity. However, if we synthesise the available literature, several salient factors
emerge while promotion, public relations and communication can all be said to
involve relationships of influence and meaning, the literature suggests that public
relations and communication, for good or bad, are inevitable. Even when promotion
occurs with inadequate thought and planning, a decision was taken at some level,
however perfunctory and instinctive, to do it. Therefore, promotion is
premeditated. Whether disastrous or wildly successful, a choice is made to
promote or not to promote.
The decision to promote is taken because positive outcomes are expected to
result from the time, resources and effort deployed. Therefore, successful
promotion is partially dependent on meeting clearly articulated objectives. Whether
or not those objectives have been met will be dependent on a process of evaluation.
Promotion is also based on an assumption of quality i.e. that something is worth
promoting, and that the promotion itself ought to be of commensurate quality.
More than simple promulgation, promotion contributes to an onwards and
upwards momentum.
Hamilton (10) distinguished between promoting in order to raise awareness
(publicity), and promoting in order to sell something (marketing).

Cronin (181, p. 85) posits a cumulative advantage theory of promotion,
suggesting that effective promotion will have a snowballing effect and gathering
influence and momentum and easing the way for future promotion, so that success
breeds success.
Rowley (18) translates the objectives of promotional strategies into a
number of categories, including increased sales (equivalent to use in libraries), the
maintenance or extension of the market share, brand recognition, the creation of a
favourable future climate, an informed and educated market, a competitive
advantage and improved promotional efficiency. It is a mixture of short and long
term outcomes, encompassing the cognitive, affective and behaviour stages of the
promotional communication process. Rowley stresses that these objectives must be
adopted in proportions that are appropriate to the individual organisation.
Irving (1, p. ix) plots the potential objectives of marketing along a
continuum which ranges from the direct and palpable, to the indirect and more
enduring outcomes, all contributing to improved funding, support and impact. It
would seem sensible to assume that promotional objectives will correspond closely
with those of the overall marketing strategy.
But why evaluate? Most simply, because there is no other way of
knowing whether promotional objectives are being met and there is no conceivable
justification for not knowing. Moreover, whether those objectives were satisfied or
not, we need to know precisely why (Pickton 18).
Usherwood (181b, p. 166) further asserts that, while it may be difficult,
evaluation (of public relations) is not impossible. He identifies the real problems as
being the difficulty of measuring long-term cumulative effects and the sheer
expense of evaluation, which he estimates, may be greater than the cost of the public
relations effort itself. By implication, evaluation is perhaps the only (albeit costly)
means of justifying the initial expenditure on promotion.
Usherwood (181b, p. 168) also criticises the lack of precision in many of
the evaluative methods thus far identified. We have already looked at the example of
the complex relationship between library promotion and increased use.Usherwood
offers another attendance figures are often recorded at promotional events and cited
as proof of the impact of that promotion, but other evidence suggests that the
people who attend such events are already well informed about the service or topic
being promoted.
Rowley (18, p. 87) adds that it also difficult to separate out the effects of
promotion form other elements of the marketing mix. For evaluation purposes,
Rowley suggests sales figures (presumably for a fee-based information service) and
other measures of reputation, but offers no explanation of what these measures
might involve.
