The two paintings that I seen at the art institute of Chicago were Saint Martin and the beggar and Saint George killing the Dragon. Saint Martin and the beggar was by El Greco and it was done on 157. Saint George Killing the dragon was done by Martorell was done in 140.
El Greco did this painting on oil and canvas that had a wooden strip added at the bottom. The image of Martin and the horse and the beggar are positioned in the foreground. Even if the color is blue it precedes back in space. The painting looks mystical and it looks real at the same time. There is a light source mostly on the horse and not much on the figures. This is more painterly then linear because you can not see the outlines. It is a closed form painting. It is very clear and you can tell what is going on. When you look at this painting, you can read exactly what it is trying to tell you. You can see Saint Martin giving the beggar a piece of his clothing.
As for Saint George killing the Dragon, it was a little different. This was made from Tempera on a panel of wood. In this painting you can see Saint George is about to kill the dragon. You can see the dragon’s eyes in terror and the frightened horse. You can not really see the face of Saint George because his eyes are shut and he does not want to seem frightened in front of the princess. On the bottom of the painting, you can see bones from animals and humans. To me that showed that the dragon had eaten them. When I look at the dragon’s tail, it leads me to the horse and to the princess. She looks like she is waiting for Saint George and meditating or praying for him. In the background there is so much going on. There is the castle with all the people in it. Then you see a plain of trees and forests behind the princess. Also, behind Saint George you can see a beautiful pond. You can see all the people looking at the princess and Saint George. When you look at this painting you can see different angles of lighting. The metal armor looks real as its reflection takes us right to the horse. The dragon’s skin looks also real. It makes me want to touch and feel the texture of the dragon’s skin. The most important thing that leads my eye from the image is St. Georges long sphere. The vertical line of the sphere takes us to the dragon’s eyes, and the horse, and to the princess. The painting looks linear because of the outlines of the horse, scarf, sphere, and the dragon. The castle also looks linear because the light hits the edges of the building. The princess’s red dress and white horse are symbols of sacrifice. This painting looks like it is open form. There is so much going on that you do not know where it starts or where it ends. It just gives us an idea because of the sphere and how it is placed vertically.

Illhia Paqueta is an island in the south eastern coast of Brasil, to be more precise, it is off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The island it self is only accessible by boat, helicopter, or seaplane, however it is one of the more populated islands in the region. I myself spent much of my early- mid childhood going to the island; my father would take my family there on our boat just about every weekend. The funny thing is that this painting was finished in the year 11, which is a whole lifetime (70 years) before I was born, and going by his painting I could swear that the place has not changed at all. The painting depicts the beautiful bay that is the main entry point to the island; Miharakis did a beautiful job in painting the local environment, as well as a very large number of people (probably exaggerated).
In this piece Miharakis uses many “tricks” to lure the viewer into this environment. When you first look at this work your eye is automatically pried to the top right corner, because of the bright yellow color that he uses for his leafs. Then your eye is taken back toward the left along the upper most tree line, and then back down the left side. All the while she’s put all kinds of gorgeous plant life, mixed with some houses in the background. When your eyes finally come across the bottom part of the painting, that’s when you realize that no matter what happened in the past, at this moment the people pictured in this piece, are genuinely happy, and full of life, it really makes you want to be there, on that day with those people.
This painting not very balanced, for you have lot more things going on in the upper part of the painting then on the bottom, such as most of the people, all the foliage, the houses, and some wildlife Were as the bottom of the painting, consists mostly of lighter colors, with the water, as well as some people. I really loved this piece, I thought that it was very well made, and it looked as if Miharakis put a lot of work into this piece. Illhia Paqueta is not a painting of what an ideal person would look like, but of what an ideal day would look like, because the people are really just part of the back ground. The first old lady tells us that it is poor Addie’s birthday, which she will not admit.
The three main characters in “A Visit Of Charity” were all very different yet they made the story work. The two old women stayed in this dreary nursing home with no connection to the outside world. On June 16,1775, under the leadership of Colonels Putnam and Prescott, about twelve hundred American troops arrived at the Charlestown Peninsula with instructions to establish defensive positions on Bunker Hill, however, Colonel Prescott instead chose the neighboring Breed’s Hill to the southeast. The next morning, the British were astonished to see the rebel fortification upon the hill and set out to reclaim the peninsula.
Thomas Gage was the British commander and chief. Naval units were brought within shelling range of Breed’s Hill and about twenty-two hundred troops, under the command of General William Howe, were dispatched from Boston. Colonel Prescott, of the Continental Army allegedly issued the famous order, ”Don’t one of you fire until you see the white’s of their eyes.” The Americans allowed the British to advance almost to the bases of the fortifications and then opened fire. General Howe led two costly and ineffective charges against the American’s fortifications but failed to inflict serous casualties. After obtaining two hundred reinforcements, which included greatly needed ammunition for his artillery, Howe ordered a bayonet charge to seize Breed’s Hill. In his third attempt, the British were finally able to force the Americans, who were out of gunpowder, to retreat back to the mainland. In the course of the engagement, Charlestown was set on fire by British shells and burned to the ground.
This battle, though victorious, proved costly for the British. Of the twenty-four hundred British soldiers in Howe’s command, one thousand and fifty-four died. This accounted for nearly forty percent of their ranks. The American casualties were four hundred and forty-one, including thirty captured. The battle served to prove to the American people that the British Army was not invincible. It became a symbol of national pride and a rally point of resistance against British rule.
The effect of this battle was to electrify both sides of the Atlantic. The Yankee farmers had held their ground. They had been defeated, not by the professional soldiers drawn up against them, but by a lack of ammunition. Throughout the colonies, Americans began to believe that independence from Britain was not only desirable but possible. The official British report of the battle arrived almost two weeks after the American version and was, by comparison, so dull that almost no one paid any attention to it. Gage was called home in disgrace, leaving Howe in command.
