“A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives.” These were words said by Jackie Robinson, one of the greatest black men to ever play in the game of baseball (Dingle, 4). This man of great honor lived through many accomplishments in his life such as his high school and college years in UCLA, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and his interest in politics after he retired.

Jackie Robinson, born on January 1, 11, lived his life through much criticism and racism, but in the end, he got a sports scholarship to UCLA. While in high school, Jackie led his basketball team in rebounding and scoring. He was the quarterback and runningback in football. He went against and beat his older brothers records. But in baseball, Jackie was the best in power hitting and base stealing (Dingle, 1-1). At UCLA, he also led in baseball, basketball, football, and track, taking him to the UCLA Sports Hall of Fame in 184. He then spent the fall of 141 playing football with the Honolulu Bears, a semi-pro team. He also worked at a construction site on the weekdays and was paid one hundred dollars to play games on the weekends. His professional year was cut short when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Jackie had always wanted to serve in the army, and now was his chance (Dingle, 15). Jackie was admitted into OCS months later, as second lieutenant, but later left because of a bus incident (Dingle, 1-1). After quitting the army, Jackie was invited to the Negro league to play shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs. He led the Monarchs in hitting, doubles, and homers (Dingle, -5). This was the beginning of a marvelous year for Jackie. On August 145, the president of the Dodgers, Branch Rickey, signed Jackie to the minor leagues to play for the Montreal Expos. He played exceptionally well, and on April 10, 147, Jackie joined the Brooklyn Dodgers (Dingle, 0-).

In his first year playing for the Dodgers Jackie batted .7 with twelve homers, and eighty-five runs batted in. He received Rookie of the Year, but not the respect he deserved (Scott, 50). Shortly after he joined the team, his teammate Eddie Stanky walked up to him and said, “I want you to know something, you’re on this ball club and as far as I’m concerned that’s makes you one of the twenty-five players on my team. But before I play with you I want you to know I don’t like it. I want you to know I don’t like you.” Jackie simply replied, “All right. That’s the way I’d rather have it. Right out in the open.”

(Dingle, 5). In 148, he also batted .7 with twelve homers, and eighty-five runs batted in as the Dodgers finished a disappointing third place (Scott, 5). Jackie exploded the following year with a .4 batting average, stole thirty-seven bases and led the league in hits, runs, runs batted in, triples, and slugging percent as he won the Most Valuable Player award. He led his team the World Series but lost to the Yankees again (Scott, 58-5). Jackie continued to be a star throughout the 15 season where he batted . and scored one hundred and nine runs. They won the National League Pennant but lost the Yankees once again. Jackie all of a sudden lost his gas in 155 and batted his career lowest of .56. However, his team made it into the World Series and beat the Yankees. “It was one of the greatest thrills in my life to be finally on a World Series winner.” (Scott, 75,7). At age thirty-seven Jackie was beginning to fade away with a .75 batting average as they lost to the Yankees in the World Series. In January 157 he retired from baseball. This meant an end to his career, but a start of some new challenges (Scott, 8).

Jackie first taste of politics happened in 150 when he was working for Chock Full O’Nuts. He asked to be head of a fund-raising campaign for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Chock Full O’Nuts allowed him to travel and speak for NAACP as long as his efforts did not interfere with his work (Scott, 86-87). He was placed in a difficult situation during the 160 presidential election, which was Richard M. Nixon against John F. Kennedy. They both wanted Jackie to work for their campaigns since they his support would win over black voters. Although Jackie supported Nixon, Kennedy still won in the end. Besides politics, baseball was still in Jackie’s mind. In 16, he became eligible for introduction in the Baseball Hall of Fame (Scott, -4). On July , 16 one hundred and twenty-four out of one hundred and sixty ballot casts where in his favor, and Jackie Robinson became the first black man to make it in Baseball Hall of Fame (Dingle, 4). On October 4, 17, tragedy struck, and Jackie Robinson died after battling his last foe diabetes. His accomplishments were honored on April 15, 17, by President Clinton and Rachael Robinson (Jackie). The number 4 was retired for perpetuity among all major league teams because Jackie “was and remains bigger than the game” (Dingle, 44).

Without Jackie Robinson, there would have been no Hank Aaron, no Ken Griffey Jr., no Tiger Woods, nor even Michael Jordan. He set many records in college, a lot more in Major League Baseball, and he helped battle for black civil right. Whenever we see ballplayers of different races playing together, or kids of different colors choosing sides for a sandlot game, we owe it to the pathfinder of racial integration in sports, Jackie Robinson.

Education, as defined in the Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, is stated to be “the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools”, the word “educate” is defined as “a way of development mentally and morally through instruction”, and a teacher is defined as “one whose occupation is to instruct.” By definition then, being a teacher is as simple as instructing people in order to help them develop; however, Webster failed to look deeply into the art of teaching and what it really means to be an educator.

To be an educator you need to not only inform or instruct; but also to encourage, support, discipline, listen and understand. A teacher’s role is divided between an instructor, care giver, mentor, and law enforcer, whom provide moral, ethical, and social values. They need to exemplify what we all ideally strive to become mentally and socially, by setting the foundation for each generation to come and supporting what past generations accomplished.

Throughout my schooling I have studied in 4 elementary schools, high schools, and one University. Within that time I have encountered a countless number of teacher’s, most of which exemplified Webster’s definition of an “educator”. I did not display an interest in my schooling and my teacher’s did not display an interest in me other then what I was not accomplishing. It was not until I enrolled in a Catholic High School that I realized the importance of my education and the importance of a teacher’s role throughout my educational development. The answer to a better education is not necessarily through a Private Institute; however, I do believe that the components smaller schools hold can benefit educators in any institute.

The focus needs to be the student; their needs, their thoughts, their potential and how to reach that drive inside each individual student in order to help assist them on their educational journey. Through my experience, teachers lost touch with their students and the drive to help each student progress. Instead of focusing on the individual, most teachers’s focused on the class as a whole, inadvertently encouraging competition between students.

Write my paper for me!!!

In many of my classes, it seemed that teachers would focus on those students that were exceptionally smart and less of a challenge. I considered my teachers to be lazy; they ignored the more challenging students, those that needed more stimulation; those with the same potential as the “exceptional” students. Teacher’s bypassed those that were more creative and less factual; instead of helping them find ways to strengthen their weaknesses and overcome their obstacles.

Our teacher’s of today need to be more focused on the student and how the student can get the most out of their education allowing teachers the opportunity of working with their students on a smaller scale. While attending Pope John I realized that the smaller the classroom was the more I got out of the class and the more I felt involved and important, causing me to subconsciously better myself. Even in larger classes at the University, when placed in smaller discussion groups I felt as if I was contributing to my education instead of watching it go by. This method also encouraged me to better myself and work harder for recognition.

In smaller classrooms, teacher and student are able to work together accessing different approaches to understanding and learning. If smaller classrooms are not feasible, then considering allowance for a more intimate learning environment may be beneficial by constructing learning groups.

As a future teacher I would enforce smaller learning groups within my classrooms, more student participation would be encouraged but supporting critical thinking. I would learn how my students think, what interest them, and format a classroom environment that will encourage individual growth. Instead of having my students feel as if they need to compete with each other intellectually, I will challenge them to compete with their selves and to push them to better themselves.

Throughout the history of time we have all evolved and changed as a each generation emerged, but the one thing that remains the same is individuality. We all think differently, interpret things differently; we have different habits, flaws, strengths and abilities, so why would we have a structured teaching method that might only assist the minority of our students. Society expects allot from us as we grow and emerge, by changing our teaching standards to fit societal standards we can better prepare our students. Focusing on the importance of freewill and individuality but also encouraging team work within our classrooms will help shape our students for the “real world”.

Throughout my experience as a student and now a graduate, I have experienced this approach to teaching within the past few years. As I progressed to each level of schooling I noticed that teachers understood the importance of instilling confidence in each individual student and helping them compete with themselves instead of others. There are ways of bettering our students without compromising our education. It is up to our teachers to figure out what means need to be implemented in our individual fields and enforce them.

Like the subjects we teach we are all different and so are our students. By getting to know them on a more personal level, while maintaining a professional repute, we can better the generations to come that will be carrying our societal standards. In the classroom we were encouraged to think structurally and by the teacher’s standards, however, once we enter the work force we are expected to think critically and independently, we need to incorporate a way to allow our students to do both in the classroom to better prepare them for the world.

In times of struggle and hardship, people are constantly looking for ways to escape their reality. They have found release from their stress in practices such as exercise, therapy, and meditation. In the ancient times of Greece, life for citizens was strict and sometimes harsh. During these times of struggle, people search for ways to vacation from the laws that bore down upon them, one of the ways they accomplished this was through art. Art was a way to express true feeling and emotion and unite a sometimes-divided population. Drama served as one escape for the citizens in Greece. Attending the plays written by Euripides, Aristophanes, Sophocles and Aeschylus, gave people the time to get away from their worries and chores and drift into a world of drama. A world where laws can be broken, women can have intelligence and slaves outwit their masters. One of the reasons the plays written by the authors of this time were so popular was because people were able to leave reality behind and slip into a world where none of the truths they held proved to be true.

A famous playwright during the times of Ancient Greece was Aeschylus. Aeschylus was thought to have been born in 55bc, although no official record has been found. Aeschylus fought the Persians at Marathon and Salamis offering great first hand detail for his play, The Persians. Aeschylus was the first man to write plays or dramas as we know them. He was the oldest of the three great writers of Greek tragedy - the other two writers were Sophocles and Euripides - who were active in Athens during the 5th century before Christ.

Before the times of Aeschylus, there were no proper plays, only songs and recitations given by one person with the help of a chorus (group of singers or reciters that usually played villagers etc.) Aeschylus change Greek drama by writing his songs and recitations for two people, each one representing a character in the story. Sometimes the actors would play more than one character. Aeschylus also got his actors to appear on stage wearing costumes and masks, beginning the use of costumes to distinguish different characters.

Aeschylus was born at Eleusis near Athens. The Athenians call him “The Father of Greek Tragedy”. All of Aeschylus’ plays are about the power of the Gods over men, the problems of leadership, and the mysterious workings of fate. In his lifetime he wrote more than 0 plays, but only seven now survive. Aeschylus won 1 prizes at the Festival of Dionysus, a religious festival where dramas were performed.

Aeschylus was supposed to have fought with the Greek forces at the Battles of Marathon and Salamis against The Persians. His earliest play the Persians celebrates Greece’s victory over the invaders.

His other surviving plays include The Suppliants, Seven Against Thebes, Prometheus Bound, and a trilogy called the Oresteia, telling the stories that befell the family of Agamemnon, the king of the Greek city Mycenae.

Aeschylus works were greatly influenced by the events in Athens during the 5th century BC. Events that had major effects on his works included the Persian Wars, The Ionian War and the evacuation of Athens in 47 BC. Aeschylus used his first hand involvement in the Persian wars as the basis for his play and also used research skills to create in depth plays. Aeschylus’ plays appear more like a first hand account of the events.

The plays written by Aeschylus and other play writes allow us to have a first hand view of the events that happened during 5th century BC. Although the plays might not be accurate due to present bias they can still be interesting and informative.

Plays were the only form of entertainment in Greek times and they were popular. A lot of thought and practice went into the plays to make them the best they could be for the audience.

Aeschylus is probably the most famous and celebrated Greek writer. He is celebrated because of his accuracy and commitment to his career. He died 456 BC in Sicily. Legend has it that Aeschylus met his death when an eagle mistook his bald head for a rock and dropped a tortoise on it. Whatever the cause of his death, his life laid the groundwork the dramatic arts would need to flourish, and by the time of his death, there were two notable successors ready to take his place - Sophocles and Euripides. In addition, Aeschylus left behind two sons who would carry on his dramatic legacy, and one of them, Euphorion, would even claim first prize at the City Dionysia, defeating both Sophocles and Euripides in 41 BC.

I went to one of the world famous restaurant in Abu Dhabi with two of my brothers and their family members. It was a revolving restaurant at the top of the 8th floor of the Fort Grand International building. That was one of the most memorable experiences in my life because it beautiful experience I shared with my family during a period of my life that I was feeling quite alone.

It was on a fine day in January in 1. At that time I was working as a computer programmer in Abu Dhabi, a state of the United Arab Emirates. That was the only time I had been away from home or my family members. So it was kind of hard and boring. One day I got a surprise call from two of my brothers, who work in Sultanate of Oman ( another country) , and they said they will be coming to Abu Dhabi in a couple of days to visit for one week. I was very happy. We are a very close knit family. It was wonderful to hear that I would see my brothers after a long time. After two days they came along with their family members.

Since I had been away from my family for a long time, this day was somewhat of a family reunion. We spent all day at my home talking and laughing. My brothers had come by with their wives and children. All three boys were between the ages of two and four. They were running around all over the apartment as they discovered a new atmosphere. They were an inquisitive bunch. Their presence made me feel like I was at home and reminded me of myself and my brothers during our childhood. We were the same as my brothers little boys. Running around everywhere and driving our parents crazy. It was wonderful.

Do my coursework

The next evening we planned to go out for dinner. Everybody started to suggest different places. Finally I suggested a very famous restaurant. The restaurant Fort Grand International was famous for revolving on the top of the 8th floor of its building. The top portion of the building was designed as a round shaped restaurant which revolves on its axis. I had heard others saying that it revolve at a rate of one rotation per hour. Since it was located on a beach, we decided the view would be spectacular. We would get a good view of both the sea and city from the top of the building. This was also the highest building in Abu Dhabi city. Everyone agreed to my suggestion because they were all excited about seeing this famous restaurant.

Around 50 pm we started from my apartment. Since my car wasn’t large enough to fit all of us, we decided to catch another taxi. The roads were really busy. We kept on talking about our parents and other family matters all the way from my apartment to the restaurant. The honking sound from other vehicles and sounds from the streets were somewhat annoying to us. Almost 0% of the taxi drivers in Abu Dhabi are Pakistani’s. It seemed like the Pakistani taxi driver of our taxi was irritated with us chatting in our local language, because he kept on murmuring something and nodding his head. Maybe it is the feud with the Indians. We paid little attention to him as we were focused on our conversation. After about 0 minutes we reached our destination.

The shape, oval body with a circular top floor made the building appear breathtaking. There were all different types of flowers arranged around huge stones in the front of the entrance. The scent from all the flowers made us feel like we were in an exotic garden. Two ancient horse carts with horsemen guarded the entrance way. It was marvelous; it was something none of us had ever seen before. We entered into the lobby of the building, through the main door. Upon entering we saw a huge hall with gigantic lanterns and other types of ancient antique figurines. One of the security guards inquired about our purpose and pointed us to the right elevator. We went into the elevator and pressed for the 8th floor. The elevator was built of glass, so we had a view of the rest of the floors. All the floors were decorated with antique figurines and exotic flowers. The adults and children were amazed by the surrounding beauty.

When we finally reached the 8th floor, the children didn’t want to get off; they wanted to continue with their “ride”. They thought the elevator ride was some sort of ride on a playground. We finally convinced them to come with us by cajoling them and telling them of more

things yet to come. Thereafter we climbed the marble stairs to the restaurant. The stairs led to a circular balcony with high rails, which encircled the entire restaurant.

The balcony was open to the evening sky and air. The sights from its height were amazing and magical. The sunlight was reflecting from the sea. The calm sea looked really beautiful surrounded by the evening sunlight. The sun looked as if it was ready to sink into the ocean. The wind was blowing like a tornado. The whistling sound of the wind added a special effect. It felt like the wind was calling out to us, as if to tell us to join him in the ocean. .

We all enjoyed the view of the sun setting from there. The yellow and orange colors of the sky were mesmerizing. One of my brothers had with him his camcorder and still camera. He took pictures of us with the sunset to remember the day. At the same time, on the other side of the restaurant, the city was putting more makeup on its face. As the daylight decreased, lights started to shine one by one. Soon the entire city was decorated with lights. On the top of our building, all the other buildings appeared really small. I searched for my apartment; however it was really hard to point out. All the people on the streets looked like ants from up above, as well as all the other vehicles on the street. Some of the children and one of my sisters- in- law seemed a bit afraid of the height.

After enjoying the marvelous sights, we walked towards the restaurant. A receptionist welcomed us and led us into the restaurant itself. From the entrance we could smell the fried meat and fish. We had all been somewhat hungry; however, the smell of the delicious food made us feel famished. The receptionist led us to a big round table. The restaurant walls were decorated with ancient Arabic paintings. The center of the wall was a huge beautiful portrait of Sheikh Saheed Al Nahiyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. It is customary for the businesses in the Middle Eastern States to have portraits of their presidents on the wall. It is a symbol of loyalty to the country.

The restaurant was filled with people chatting in different languages, with the main language being Arabic. The waitresses seemed like they were Russians and Philippinos. A philippino waitress wearing a red and green long dress came to us to take our order. We ordered soup as a start, there after Arabic kabboos, fried camel meat, and fried lobster and shrimp. We decided to stop with this for the time being and order if we need more later.

Our table was covered with a red velvet tablecloth and ornamented with yellow and white roses. The feel of the velvet cloth, along with the pleasant scent of the flowers made our sitting very peaceful. The water smelled and tasted really good. It had some drops of rose water so we felt that we were in some type of exotic garden. The waitress brought our chicken soup at this time. It took about 15 minutes for her to bring our food. In between that time, the waitress served us some vegetable salad on three plates. The salad consisted of green leaves, red and yellow peppers, red onions, red cabbage, chick peas mixed with a creamy sauce. It had a mild spicy flavor. We all decided to try the fried camel meat next. This was an item none of us had ever tasted before. It seemed like they put a paste of masala directly on the meat and fried it. Anyhow the meat seemed really red and spicy. It was hard, fibrous and luscious. They served the kabboos with mutton curry. The lobster and shrimp was succulent. They were both sauted in lots of rich butter, with just the right amount of spices. The slice of king fish was so big that it covered the entire plate. All the fried items were reddish in color. Everybody enjoyed the food really well. We talked and laughed while enjoying the mouth-watering food. After about an hour we decided to leave the restaurant and returned to my apartment.

After spending few more days with me, the day had come for my brothers and their family to return back to Oman. When it was time for them to leave we were all sad. We had a wonderful visit filled with laughter and joy. None of us knew when it would be that we would see each other again. The children had grown much attached to me and they were crying as time came for them to leave. We all hugged and kissed each other. My brothers made me promise that I would visit them upon my next vacation. I escorted them to their taxi and they started on their journey back to Oman. I was glad that they had come to visit. I had been feeling very lonely and homesick. The family presence had made me happier than what I was feeling prior to their visit. It gave me something to cherish until my next visit with them. Those were some of the most memorable days of my life.

Write my paper for me!!!

The Culmination

It has happened to nearly everyone in America. We face those moments in time when the anticipation of an event is joyful, but the experience is sad. The occasion that evoked these emotions in me was my high school graduation. I felt I had made it; I had reached the pinnacle of my young life, unscathed for the most part. There were the unavoidable conundrums that every kid is confronted with in high school What am I going to write my research paper over, who am I going to date this weekend, now that I can finally leave the campus for lunch, where should I go? It is only now that I realize how minuscule those choices really were. The thirty-six months of countless hours of schoolwork, athletic training, and a handful of naps during 4th period History culminated in a split-second montage of what had been the last four years of my life. The pictures flashed, and the thoughts ran rampant. I was about to receive my diploma.

The morning of May 0, 00, started no differently than any other day of the past four years, roll out of bed, and show up at school. However, after arriving at school, everyone knew that this day would not equal any other. The seniors met in the auditorium at 800 am to practice the commencement ceremonies that were to take place later that evening. We had twelve hours to get it right. Ms. Campbell, our English teacher, made it clear to us that we were not leaving until it was perfect. Our entire class of 48 made their way to the stage of the Archer City High School auditorium. We

initially sat wherever we wanted but were told that all seating was subject to change. After the long and tedious process of getting the seating just right, came the arduous task of walking in with some sort of uniformity. Though the request sounded simple, it proved to be quite the opposite. We lined up in the hall and proceeded to come into the auditorium when we heard the familiar song, “Pomp and Circumstance”. We marched down the aisles, two by two, until all 48 of us were seated. Next, the Salutatorian and the Valedictorian practiced their respective speeches. They were flawless, and a few of my more emotional classmates even shed a tear. This seemed odd to me considering it wasn’t even the real thing. Finally our practice was officially over, and we ventured off to do our own thing until 60.

I had invited a few friends over for lunch, a swim, and a few games of eight ball. My mom had cooked a brisket, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and rolls. We devoured lunch in no time and proceeded out to the pool to swim. It got a little wild in our above ground pool, considering it was filled with eight of the biggest guys on the football team. After splashing a large quantity of water out of the pool, we decided to play a different kind of pool. My buddies got a little discouraged because I never lost at eight ball, so they left around o’clock. I was beginning to get anxious about what would be taking place in just 5 hours. However, my mother was 5 times antsier. This turned out to be a good thing, since I didn’t have to worry about getting the wrinkles out of the gown that was lying in the bottom of my closet or making sure my shirt was ironed. Finally, it was 600 pm and time to get ready. There they were lying neatly on my bed, a pressed shirt and slacks, polished shoes, and my dad’s tie. After posing for a

few pictures with my grandparents and uncles, I started my car, cranked up the Linkin Park CD, and was off to the auditorium. Upon arrival I was told that all 48 seniors were cramming into Ms. Campbell’s room for a sneak peek of the Senior Slide Show. We had a good laugh as we watched each other’s baby pictures and various other photos flash across the screen. This brought back many memories and produced more tears. Glancing out the window, I noticed family and friends pouring into the auditorium. It was time. We made our way down to the hall outside the auditorium. The place was packed, standing room only, everyone waiting for the piano player’s fingers to strike the first chord. As she started playing, the tears started flowing all around me. Although everyone was crying, I had a big grin on my face; I knew this was it.

It’s amazing how things come together when they matter most. All I could see in the auditorium were flashes from cameras and the huge spotlight. The next hour went by in a flash, filling my mind with images that are still vivid today. A few speeches, a class song, and 48 diplomas later, I graduated. With this recently acquired achievement, a new era began, the “real world.” Soon, I would be going to college, paying bills, and having to grow up whether I wanted to or not. This time of change my parents had abstractly prepared me for was now a reality. None of us knew how the culmination of our last four years would be manifested as we left the doors of Archer City High School for the last time.

EUREKA!…REALLY?

(DESCARTES THEORY OF DUALISM)

by Becky Lanes

How do I know that I exist? What am I made up of? How does my mind and body work together? What distinguishes me from an animal? Am I for real?

These are the very questions that must have troubled Rene Descartes. He was a doubter. In fact, he doubted his very own existence! Thus, in his search for an explanation and proof of his existence, Descartes, typically a rational and precise mathematician that he was, claimed to have discovered an absolute certainty. His quest led him to his theory of Dualism. The theory presents reassuring answers to questions about man’s existence, but it still leaves some gaps, given the context of our modern discoveries.

Rene Descartes, a well-educated and gifted Frenchman, lived during the 17th century as a well-known mathematician and philosopher. Towards the last part of his life, he was employed in the royal courts of Sweden as a philosophy tutor (Vazquez, 00). It was said that he preferred to get away to a quiet place to think and work (Wertheimer, 17). It was probably during one of his philosophical self-reflections that he made the triumphant discovery of the answers to his own questions about his identity and existence.

“Do I exist? How do I know that I exist?…First of all, I am doubtful of my existence…Now, this is thinking…Doubting is thinking. Am I real? Yes, I am. Why? Because I am thinking! I think…therefore, I am! Yes, I do exist. COGITO ERGO SUM!!! Eureka!”

This revelatory and famous statement served as the first step in Descartes’ arrival to his own truth. Once he had happily and unquestionably established this fact to himself, he went on to answer the second question if I do exist, what am I made of?

Descartes realized that man is made up of two types of substance physical and mental. A human is composed of a physical body with many physical properties such as skin, bones, muscles, and organs; but a human being also has a nonphysical mind with nonphysical properties such as thoughts and feelings.

Espousing a mind-body Dualism similar to Plato’s, Descartes conceived of the body as material substance, a machine like any physical body that operates automatically and mechanistically; but our mind, as thinking substance, is not a machine. It has the capacity to reason. Descartes equates the mind with the soulable to perceive, exercise its will and possessing certain built-in ideas and axioms, such as the idea of God as well as geometrical and algebraic axioms (Wertheimer, 17).

On the third questionhow do the two work togetherDescartes was convinced that there was interaction between the mind and the body through the pineal gland in the brain. He reasoned that this gland is central, i.e. not bilateral like the other cerebral parts, and not found in animals. According to him, our minds and bodies causally interact with one another almost all of the time; meaning that events and states in our mind can cause physical events in our bodies and vice versa. For example, a pin pricking your finger (a physical event) causes you to feel pain (a mental event) and causes you to say “ouch,” (a physical event). Descartes used the concept of interactionism to explain the relation between our physical and mental aspects (Macnamara, 1).

This dualistic nature of man distinguishes human beings from animals, Descartes believed. Animals only have physical bodies; they are without souls. Thus, they are merely machines, instinctively operating for mere survival purposes. These are the answers Descartes postulated for the fourth question.

This leads us now to a closer look of Descartes’ theory. Basically, we will present here three points of reaction.

First of all, Descartes’ “Cogito ergo sum” is convincing. His line of thinking, if that were so as we imagined it to be, is logical. Indeed, we can be sure that Descartes doubted his existence. Doubting implies a doubter. I think, therefore, I am.

Ironically, Descartes became certain of his existence by doubting it in the first place!

Secondly, there is indeed some sense in the concept of dualismthat the mind and the body are separate and independent of one another. In our own self-reflection, we have come to realize that although our physical body grows “old” (e.g. graying hair, lesser stamina, weaker bones, wrinkled skin), yet our “feelings” remain the same. Feelings do not grow old.

Also, we often hear the line “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Such conventional wisdom, based on countless testimonies of people’s actual experiences, lend support to the theory of Descartes’ dualism, that the mind and the body are separate, each one possessing its own energies, powers and way of functioning.

On the third point, however, we divert paths from Descartes’ line of thinking. It has been proven, for instance, by modern research that mammals and other lower vertebrates also have a pineal gland. Likewise, recent studies on animal behavior have proven that animals do have emotions of happiness, anger, fear, jealousy and affection (Carmichael, 00). Chimpanzees and even rats have demonstrated convincing signs of a form of reasoning, problem-solving skills and memoryforms of so-called mental processes (Atkinson, 10). Thus, there are now proofs that the mind is not a purely human domain.

In the same way, Descartes’ concept that instinct mainly belongs to animals is highly debatable. We know for a fact that humans also have instincts. Survival instinct, “maternal instinct,” defense mechanisms, sexual arousalthese are just but a few terms we employ in naming human instinctive processes.

It is more accurate to say, therefore, that man and animals both have mental and instinctual attributes, but they are just different in degrees and levels. For example, the mind of human beings operate at a much higher degree than that of the animals. Whereas both have capacities for problem-solving, it is the man who has greater sophistication to design, create and utilize the tools he needs to solve his daily problems. Thus, mentally, man is more superior than animals. While instinctually, the latter is sharper than the former.

Long before science had invented the machines to track the workings in our brain when we are in the process of thinking, Rene Descartes had already found the proof that there is a mind. Descartes’ Dualism was his way of explaining human existence, the separability as well as the interaction of our mind and body, and the distinction between humans and animals. Although some aspects of his theory have been disproven by modern science, most of his theory still ring true and strong.
